A Note From Fr. Hank
Year A
Dear FriendsI like poetry. I can’t remember and recite long poems the way some people can, in fact, I can’t remember and recite short poems either but I still like poetry. This morning, earlyish, I was reading one of my favorite poets, William Stafford. I recommend him to you. One of my all time favorite poems is one of his - “The Way It Is” There’s a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn’t change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can’t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding. You don’t ever let go of the thread.

The Way It Is
The first and last lines, “There’s a thread you follow” and “You don’t ever let go of the thread” sum up, fairly completely, my understanding of the spiritual journey. I suppose “the thread” may mean different things to different folks but for me Jesus is the thread. Always there like a seeing eye dog for a totally blind person. That may not sound like great theology but, for me, it’s a wonderful truth.
Blessings, Hank+

Advent is a season observed in Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The term is an anglicized version of the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming". Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year. It is the four Sundays preceding Christmas. The liturgical color for Advent can be blue or purple. Page 34
