Message from the Di rector What an exciting year 2008 has been for the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary! As our country focused on securing its political and financial future, we embarked on a series of new projects and partnerships aimed at securing a brighter future for the Delaware Estuary. We started out the year with a future-focused theme to “Estuary News”, and are wrapping it up with preparations for the third biennial Delaware Estuary Science and Environmental Summit. This meeting will be held in Cape May, New Jersey, from January 11-14, and it is dedicated to “Planning for Tomorrow’s Delaware Estuary”. In July, we released the “2008 State of the Estuary” report thanks to the collaborative work of dozens of our closest partners in the region. This effort was the Partnership at its best — working across jurisdictions to compile the best available information, based in science and presented to engage the public. Designed to provide readers with an assessment of how the Estuary is doing, where conditions are improving and where they are not, the “2008 State of the Estuary” report will be a valuable resource for years to come. Also this summer, PDE was selected as one of only six National Estuary Programs to conduct pilot studies for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new Climate Ready Estuaries Program. Through this program, we are taking a look at potential impacts and adaptation strategies for protecting some of our most vulnerable resources — drinking water, tidal wetlands, and shellfish — from the impacts of climate change as we head into the future. But the real highlight of 2008 has been the many new people and partners we’ve engaged in our work — including new staff, new Board members, and new donors. You’ll see many of their names and faces here in our 2008 Activity Report, along with highlights from our programs this year and recognition of the donors who make all of this great work possible.

2008 Program Highlights
The The Yea Year r in in Review Review
WINTER Late in 2007, the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE) staff traveled to Washington, DC to celebrate the National Estuary Program’s 20th Anniversary. During the event, EPA’s Source Water Protection Program was recognized for collaborating with PDE to implement source water protection measures in the Schuylkill Watershed as a partner in the Schuylkill Action Network.

Green thumbs turned out in March for the Philadelphia Flower Show (photo A) where the Philadelphia Water Department and PDE sponsored “Jazz Up Your Roof.” This award-winning display demonstrated to over 200,000 visitors how a green roof filled with plants can capture and filter stormwater runoff while helping to maintain controlled climates in the rooms below.
In May, PDE collaborated with the Academy of Natural Sciences to convene a technical Climate Change Workshop and Town Square meeting, allowing scientists, resource managers, planners, and the general public to exchange the latest climate-change information and discuss the highest priority needs in the Delaware Estuary region.
SPRING Two drawing contests sponsored by the Philadelphia Water Department and Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) attracted over 3,200 entries in Philadelphia and Delaware. All of the winning artists’ work was featured in stormwater pollution-prevention campaigns on SEPTA and DART rail cars and buses, bringing their “Clean Water Begins and Ends with You” messages to millions of travelers.

In April, the City of Wilmington and PDE celebrated Wilmington Earth Day by handing out 1,000 native plants in sunny Rodney Square. Record numbers of residents, school children, and workers flocked to the festival-like atmosphere that featured 20 exhibitors, several hybrid cars, and a live radio broadcast. Spring cleaning came early at the Christina River Watershed Cleanup (photo C). One hundred volunteers worked at PDE’s Christina Riverfront site, removing two tons of debris. In all, more than 15 tons were removed from the cleanup’s 15 sites. No Dumping, Drains to River! 2008 was a recordbreaking year for Storm Drain Marking in Philadelphia with more than 10,000 storm drains marked city-wide by over 300 volunteers!
C
This spring, PDE initiated the Freshwater Mussel Restoration Program (photo D) to reintroduce water-filtering mussels into the Brandywine, Ridley, and White Clay Creeks where they once thrived. Through this effort, lab-reared mussels will be transplanted back into local streams to help boost the population and provide water quality improvement.

With the debut of ecoDelaware.com, PDE successfully launched Delaware’s first ecotourism initiative promoting the Delaware Estuary as a nature-related tourist destination worthy of protection and enhancement. Visit ecoDelaware.com for fun-filled activities throughout the state!
SUMMER This summer PDE hosted the 12th Annual Delaware Estuary Watershed Workshop for Teachers (photo E) in conjunction with the Bucks County Conservation District and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Eighteen new teachers participated in a weeks worth of hands-on activities in the Estuary’s creeks, wetlands, and bay.

In July, PDE finalized and distributed its “State of the Estuary Report” to over 20,000 readers, with input from numerous partners and agencies. The report’s readerfriendly and informative layout assesses Estuary-wide conditions, targets areas for improvement, and identifies future goals and actions. This summer the Delaware Estuary Benthic Inventory (photo F) collected 225 benthic (bay-bottom) samples, from the mouth of the bay to the river’s tidal waters near Philadelphia. The first of its kind in the Delaware Estuary, this data will fill critical gaps in our understanding of bay-bottom species and habitats. This work also resulted in the discovery of a rare sponge that many believed did not exist in the bay.

Also this summer, PDE and Rutgers University Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory began deploying coconut logs and mats along the eroding marshes of the Maurice River to promote the growth of natural shellfish reefs to guard against erosion and the impacts of sea level rise, as part of the Delaware Estuary Living Shoreline Initiative (DELSI) (photo G).
WINTER
PDE continues to represent the Delaware Bay Oyster Restoration Task Force (photo H) at estuary-wide festivals to raise awareness about our bay’s tastiest shellfish. Check out the Fall 2008 edition of “Estuary News” on our website for a full update.
PDE was selected by EPA as one of the six pilot projects in its Climate Ready Estuaries Program. The program will assist the National Estuary Programs in developing Climate Change Adaptation Plans for their respective estuaries.

This summer PDE produced a series of informational pieces telling the story of the Schuylkill Watershed Initiative Grant (SWIG) (Image I) and the Schuylkill Action Network (SAN) as efforts continue to protect water quality in the Schuylkill River watershed.
PDE entered a new phase of fundraising with its first-ever house party in June. This unique event was attended by over 50 guests who enjoyed an evening of good food, lively conversation, and philanthropy, helping to raise money to support PDE’s efforts. During late summer DelDOT and PDE coordinated the St. Jones Dog Waste Reduction Program encouraging the watershed’s dog-owners to pick up after their pooches. PDE sent information about the water-quality benefits of picking up after your pets to over 2,000 pet owners, accompanied by doggie treats and biodegradable dog-waste bags.

FALL Through funding provided by EPA and in partnership with the Stroud Water Research Center, PDE’s Teachers and Trees program engaged over 500 children in planting native trees at eight Pennsylvania schools. In early fall PDE coordinated with the City of Newark, White Clay Wild & Scenic, Delaware Nature Society, and the University of Delaware to host a “Build Your Own Rain Barrel” Workshop. The free workshop taught 20 Newark residents how to assemble their own rain barrels.
J
This fall PDE worked with Noramco, GBSC, Centocor, and McNeil — all members of PDE’s Corporate Environmental Stewardship Program (photo J) — to complete a habitat restoration project at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center. PDE staff and corporate volunteers planted more than 1,500 native plants, shrubs, and trees in a pasture at the New Bolton Center’s equine facility to help improve the health of a stream that runs through the campus property. Southeastern Pennsylvania Coast Day (photo K), held by PDE every September, drew thousands of people to Penn’s Landing to participate in over a dozen activities provided by our partner organizations, as well as an oystertasting, free “Duck Rides” on the Delaware, and guided bus tours to the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center. In 2008, PDE began working with web consultants and its partners in the Schuylkill Action Network to develop a web communications plan that will result in a new website and online communication tools for SAN in 2009.
K On October 2nd, PDE celebrated “A Blue Rendezvous for a Greener Tomorrow” (photo L) when almost 400 of our closest friends and supporters gathered together for the annual PDE dinner and silent auction fundraising event at Turbine Hall on the Chester Riverfront. Thanks to all who volunteered and attended for making the event such a success!
