concerns, relate these to my prior work experience, and collaborate to create alternatives that serve all the related participants: students, parents, community members, educators, and others. Thanks for this opportunity to grow and share!” “I signed up to be a mentor because I know how important it is to have someone to call, whether it’s with a minor question or in the midst of an emergency. I love being a mentor now, not just because I have been able to help others, but because I have gained so much. Mentoring gave me the opportunity to be involved in various situations that I otherwise may not have been. I made some good friends too.”

Research has demonstrated that new leaders who are provided with proper support experience greater work satisfaction, leading to increased retention.

What is Mentoring to Mastery (M2M)?

• The purpose of the Mentoring to Mastery (M2M) program is to ensure that new special education administrators have the competencies needed to serve students, parents, community members, and colleagues effectively. • The goal of mentoring is to foster the development of skills and competencies in new special education administrators (protégés) through pairing with veteran administrators (mentors). • Mentors provide support by sharing expertise and experience, assisting with locating resources, collaborating, and problem solving.

How does M2M work?

• Mentors and protégés are paired based upon the needs of the protégé. • Mentors and protégés commit to working together for two years, which includes regular communication by phone or email and at least two face-to-face contacts per year. • Mentors and protégés are expected to attend the Special Education Leadership Summer Academy and one additional PaTTAN-sponsored leadership activity. • PaTTAN leadership consultants provide training and assistance to the mentors and protégés. • A programmatic framework based upon the Council for Exceptional Children’s standards for school leaders and tailored to Pennsylvania’s needs has been developed and is used to focus mentoring activities.

Annual M2M Events

July – Mentor Orientation at the Summer Leadership Academy September – Mentor/Protégé Matching: Cohort Begins Fall – Regional Meeting of Mentors and Protégés (videoconference) Spring – Regional Meeting of Mentors and Protégés (videoconference) April – PDE Annual Conference: One-day Meeting of Mentors and Protégés

“Having a mentor during the past two school years has been invaluable. The guidance and support provided by my mentor greatly enhanced my ability to deal with many of the difficulties that come with being a novice administrator. Having a veteran administrator to act as a guide has been a great source of support. I was able to ask my mentor questions and get an honest, seasoned answer. Thanks for such a wonderful program and support!” “The mentoring did help so much during my first year of supervising. Thanks again.” “I just wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to have a mentor this first year and what a year it was! My mentor was very supportive even though I am sure some of my questions seemed elementary. She was a great resource! Thanks!”
