PSAC Football - Week Four Notes - 9/16/09 Quick Hits - Clarion’s Tyler Huether has three of the top six single-game passing yard totals in the PSAC this year, while East Stroudsburg’s Matt Marshall has two of the other top six. Edinboro’s Trevor Harris has the other, which is also the top passing performance in a single-game this year. - The aforementioned trio - Harris (314.33 - 9th), Huether (292.67 - 16th) and Marshall (293.67 - 15th) are ranked in the top 20 nationally in total offense per game. - Through three games, only one running back in the PSAC has ran for at least 100 yards in all three games this year - Gannon’s Jon Richardson. - Harris, Huether and Marshall are also the only three quarterbacks in the PSAC that have thrown for at least 200 yards in all three games this year. - Slippery Rock, IUP and Cheyney are the only three PSAC teams that haven’t yet missed a field goal. - Through two weeks of “crossover” games, both the East ern and the Western Divisions each have eight wins apiece. The final week of “crossover” games will be in the final week of the regular season. - Last year in “crossover” games, the West won 15 games while the East won 9 - Four PSAC teams enter Week 4 undefeated at 3-0: Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg, IUP and Slippery Rock. Last year, there were also four teams undefeated heading into Week 4. Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg and IUP were also undefeated after Week 3 last year, as was Edinboro. - Matt Marshall of East Stroudsburg completed 79.3 percent of his passes (23-for-29) in the Warriors’ win over Clarion last Saturday and was named the PSAC East Player of the Week for his efforts. This marked the second straight year that an ESU quarterback completed over 70 percent of his passes in a win over Clarion, as Tim Roken completed 72.7 percent of his passes (24-for-33) in last year’s road win over the Golden Eagles. He was also named PSAC East Player of the Week for his performance in that week. Two Teams Fall Out of Both Polls, PSAC Still With Three Teams in Each Poll One more PSAC school fell out of both the AFCA and D2football.com polls this week, leaving the PSAC with just two teams ranked in both polls after the PSAC started the year with four teams in the AFCA and five in the D2football.com poll. Bloomsburg moved up one spot in the AFCA poll to No. 4, equaling its highest ranking from last year, and remained at No. 5 in the D2football.com poll. IUP climbed to No. 21 in the AFCA poll and to all the way to No. 13 in the D2football.com poll West Chester fell out of both polls after its loss to California and is not even receiving any votes in the AFCA poll. California and Edinboro are both receiving votes in the AFCA poll. This marks the second week this season that the PSAC has not had the most teams of any conference represented in both Top 25 polls. The PSAC had the most schools of any conference or tied for the most schools of any conference in both polls for all of last season and for the first two weeks of this season. National Leaders The PSAC has a few teams that are leading or co-leading the country in various categories as of the latest NCAA statistical report. They are listed below. - Lock Haven is one of 14 teams nationally, and the only one in the PSAC, that is yet to lose a fumble this year. - The Bald Eagles are also one of 16 teams nationally that are perfect in red zone scoring chances, a perfect 1-for-1. - After being tied for the national lead last week, Clarion now has a solo lead atop the national lead for fewest tackles for loss allowed per game at just 2.33. The Golden Eagles have allowed just seven tackles for loss in three games, tied with three other teams for the fewest overall, and have lost just 20 yards on offense in tackles for loss. - Bloomsburg and Kutztown, who play each other this week, are two of 15 teams nationally that have not yet allowed a fourth-down conversion on defense. The Huskies, however, have the most chances on fourth down defensively than any other team without allowing a conversion, with nine. The team with the next-most without having allowed a conversion is Abilene Christian with six. Kutztown has not allowed a fourth down conversion in five chances.

PSAC in Non-Conference Action The PSAC went 9-5 this year against Division II non-conference competition, and 9-6 overall. This is a large improvement over last year’s 6-9 overall non-

PSAC Players of the Week - Sept. 13 (Week 3)

PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week Matt Marshall, East Stroudsburg QB, Jr., York, Pa./Spring Grove

Marshall enjoyed a near-record day in helping lead East Stroudsburg to a 45-31 victory over Clarion as an ESU player earns the East Offensive Player of the Week award for the second straight week. Marshall completed 23-of-29 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns. His 79.3 completion percentage was the second-highest completion percentage in a game by a Warrior QB in school history, topped only by Tom Taylor’s 81.0 percent (17-for-21) vs. Southern Connecticut in 1989. On the year, Marshall has completed a PSAC-best 70.8 percent of his passes.

PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week Anthony Smith, Bloomsburg LB, Sr., Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown

Smith earns his second East Defensive Player of the Week award in the last three weeks after keying another dominant defensive performance by Bloomsburg in the Huskies’ 17-7 win over Mercyhurst. Smith made 11 tackles, his second game in three with double digit tackles and seven of which were solo stops, and had a key interception that set up a Bloomsburg touchdown late in the first half. His pick, the first of his career, came after the Huskies had gone up 3-0 with two minutes left in the first half. He returned it 15 yards to the Laker 23-yardline to set up a Bloom TD to put them up 10-0 at the half and what would eventually be the difference in the game. Smith also had a pass break up.

PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week Tobias Robinson, IUP RB, Jr., Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest

Robinson ran for 169 yards on 20 carries (8.5 ypc) to help IUP to a 17-3 win over Millersville. His 83-yard touchdown run with 12:57 left in the second quarter broke a scoreless tie and gave the Crimson Hawks the only score they would need to win the game. Robinson’s performance marked his eight career 100-yard game and his fifth career TD run of 77 yards or more in the last two seasons. Through three games, Robinson is one of just four backs in the PSAC to be averaging over 100 yards rushing per game, as he is third at 125.0 ypg.

PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week Matthew Neal-Mink, Gannon DB, Jr., Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown

Neal-Mink led all tacklers for the third straight week, recording 10 or more tackles for the third straight game in helping lead Gannon to a 30-9 win over Cheyney. Neal-Mink made 10 tackles, including seven solo stops, as well as 2.0 tackles for loss, one of which was a sack for a loss of seven yards. He also forced a fumble and recovered a separate fumble. With Gannon holding a 20-9 midway through the third quarter, Neal-Mink forced a Cheyney fumble at the Wolves’ 26-yardline that was returned to the five. The Golden Knights then scored a touchdown on the next play.

conference record (6-8 vs. Division II opponents). Listed below is the conference and record breakdown of the PSAC’s non-conference opponents this year, followed by the PSAC’s record last year in non-conference action. 2009 - 9-6 overall (9-5 vs. Division II) Northeast 10: 3-1 (Wins - IUP over Southern Connecticut State, Millersville over Assumption, Kutztown over St. Anselm; Losses - American International over C.W. Post) WVIAC: 2-1 (Wins - Clarion over Fairmont State, Edinboro over West Liberty State; Losses - Shepherd over Shippensburg) CIAA: 2-1 (Wins - East Stroudsburg over Virginia Union, Slippery Rock over Bowie State; Losses - Lincoln over Cheyney) GLIAC: 1-2 (Wins - Bloomsburg over Ashland; Losses - Wayne State over Mercyhurst, Saginaw Valley State over California) Independents: 1-0 (Gannon over Lake Erie) Division I FCS (CAA): 0-1 (Losses - Delaware over West Chester) 2008 - 6-9 overall (6-8 vs. Division II) WVIAC: 1-4 (Wins - Edinboro over West Liberty State; Losses - Fairmont State over Clarion, Glenville State over Lock Haven, Shepherd over Shippensburg, Seton Hill over Slippery Rock) Northeast 10: 1-2 (Wins - Kutztown over St. Anselm; Losses - AIC over C.W. Post, Bentley over Millersville GLIAC: 1-1 (Wins - Bloomsburg over Ashland; Losses - Wayne State over Mercyhurst) CIAA: 1-1 (Wins - East Stroudsburg over Virginia Union; Losses - Bowie State over Cheyney) Independent: 2-0 (Wins - Gannon over Lake Erie, California over Lake Erie) Division I FCS (CAA): 0-1 (Losses - Delaware over West Chester) Ranked Scots Equals No Good Edinboro was upset at home by Shippensburg in Week 2. The Red Raiders were unranked, while the Fighting Scots were ranked 15th and 16th in the two polls. The loss by Edinboro marked the first time since last year that a ranked PSAC team lost to an unranked PSAC team. That last time it happened was also the only time it happened last year, when the Fighting Scots lost at home to Mercyhurst. Prior to last year, Edinboro came out on top in the previous time it happened, as an unranked Fighting Scots squad topped ranked Bloomsburg in 2007. Streaks There are a couple of streaks that are currently active, some of which teams want to keep going, and others that teams want to break. With divisional play opening this week, West Chester enters the season with a 16-game winning streak in PSAC East play, while California enters the year with a 13-game winning streak in PSAC West play. On the opposite end, Cheyney will be looking to break a 16-game losing streak in PSAC East play and a 20-game losing streak overall. Lock Haven will be looking to break a seven-game losing streak in PSAC West play and a 13-game losing streak overall. East Stroudsburg and IUP are tied for the longest current overall winning streak in the PSAC, each with a seven-game winning streak.

is more passing yards in a game than all but one performance in the PSAC all of last year. Kevin McCabe of California threw for 443 yards against West Chester in the PSAC championship game. It also marked the second-most passing yards of Harris’ career. His 453 yards of total offense in a single game is also more than all but one player had in the PSAC all of last year, also McCabe vs. West Chester. A few other individuals from around the PSAC had outstanding opening games in Week 1, setting single-game highs in the first game that were equal to the PSAC single-game high from all of last year. Those are listed below. - Robert Mamula of Clarion scored 15 points kicking, equaling the single-game high from the PSAC of last year, set by Craig Burgess of IUP with 15 vs. Gannon. - Both Mamula and C.J. Bahr of Slippery Rock made 46-yard field goals. Only Millersville’s John Banzhof made a longer field goal last year, a 50-yarder vs. Bloomsburg. - Slippery Rock’s Pat Marsilio recorded 4.5 tackles for loss against Bowie State. Only Gannon’s Matt Ward recorded that many in a game last year, recording 4.5 against Clarion. You Don’t See That Very Often The PSAC had an abundance of two things in Week 1 that don’t usually happen nearly as often as they happened on the opening weekend. There were five interceptions returned for touchdowns last week, including two in one game. There were also four safeties scored, including two in one game as well, and one safety allowed. Below is the list of safeties and the interceptions that were returned for touchdowns around the PSAC last week. Interceptions Returned for TDs Branden Williams, Edinboro (vs. West Liberty - 27 yds.) Abe Satterfield, IUP (vs. SCSU - 74 yds.) Cordero Newkirk, West Chester (vs. Lock Haven - 61 yds.) Daily Whitten, Clarion (vs. Fairmont State - 57 yds.) Chris Wilson, Clarion (vs. Fairmont State - 40 yds.) Safeties Scored West Chester (vs. Lock Haven - Team safety) California (vs. Saginaw Valley State - Team safety) Slippery Rock (vs. Bowie State - 2 Team safeties)

Bloomsburg, West Chester Fare Well Against PSAC East The PSAC East has been dominated recently by Bloomsburg and West Chester. Both schools have put together a pair of impressive streaks. West Chester currently has a 16-game winning streak in PSAC East play and the Golden Rams have won 31 straight PSAC East game against opponents other than Bloomsburg. Their last loss to a PSAC East opponent other than Bloomsburg was to East Stroudsburg on October 25, 2003. Bloomsburg, meanwhile has won 26 straight PSAC East games against opponents other than West Chester. The Huskies’ last loss to a PSAC East opponent other than West Chester was also to East Stroudsburg, a 30-24 loss in Week 5 of the 2004 season. What to Expect California rebounded from its tough and unexpected 0-2 start to the season by winning on the road at a then-ranked West Chester team last week. The Vulcans will be looking to continue that momentum as they put their 13-game PSAC West winning streak on the line against a Gannon team that is off to a 2-1 start for the second straight year. The Vulcans were able to pick up their first win last week despite being dominated statistically on offense. Cal enters divisional play ranked in the lower half of the PSAC in most offensive categories and struggles maintaining possession, as the Vulcans are 14th in the PSAC in average time of possession. QB Josh Portis has shown improvement and presents a nice dual threat for the Vulcans as he is the team’s second-leading rusher. However, he has completed less than 50 percent of his passes while the running game has been slowed by injuries and inconsistency. Cal does have one of the most talented receivers in the league, however, in A.J> Jackson, who is averaging nearly 70 ypg in receiving. Unfortunately for Gannon, the Golden Knights’ defense is statistically the weakest the Cal has gone up against this season. Gannon has struggled in stopping the run and is ranked in the lower half of the league in most defensive categories. Cal’s defense has been its strong point, as the Vulcans are yet to give up more than 23 points in a game and are doing a decent job of stopping the run. They will need to stop the run against Gannon, whose running game ranks second in the PSAC behind Jon Richardson, who has run for 100 yards in all three games so far and has seven TDs. Tyler Batts joined Richardson in the 100-yard club last week while QB Zach Boedicker is also a threat to run. Amazingly, however, Gannon ranks only one spot above Cal in average time of possession. The Vulcans’ special teams have probably been the best unit of the three for them this year, as they have scored points in two of the three games and blocked two punts. If the Cal offense still struggles, the Vulcans may need to assert their advantage on special teams. Behind Terrence Johnson’s 27.7 ypr average on kicks, Cal is averaging 27.1 as a team, compared to just 15.6 for Gannon. Both kickers are solid as Cal’s Kevin Hagerman is 2-for-3 on FGs and Jeremy Ditzler of Gannon is 3-for-4. Cal holds an advantage in punting, however, as behind Derek Fiorenza, they average 36.9 net per punt while Gannon is only at 25.3.

What to Expect This will be a battle between a pair of winless teams that are both still in the development stage. Both teams’ offenses are a bit of a work in progress while both teams’ defenses have given up enough points and yards to rank the lower half of the PSAC, but C.W. Post’s appears to be a bit farther along at this point. Cheyney has a young offense, and now two different freshman QBs have seen significant time. Malik White and Angel Rodriguez both only throw for just over 50 yards per game, although Rodriguez has completed almost 30 percent more of his passes than White, but both are running threats. Rodriguez is the team’s second-leading rusher. Ron Hunter had a 100-yard game against Mercyhurst and is averaging an impressive 7.3 ypc. The Wolves’ running game is ranked sixth in the PSAC but the passing game is barely generating 100 ypg, which likely will not be helped by C.W. Post’s defense, which already has nine sacks, tied for the fourth-most in the league. The Pioneers are similar to Cheyney in that their strength is clearly in the running game. QB Eric Anderwkavich appears to have taken over the starting job and he is the team’s second-leading rusher as well and averages a decent 5.6 ypc while also completing a respectable 56.3 percent of his passes, but only for 130 ypg as the Pioneers have lacked the big play, with their longestpassing play going for just 36 yards, although Chris Harris is a reliable receiver and his 74 ypg average is fourth in the PSAC. That should match up well with Cheyney’s defense, which has the worst run defense in the PSAC but the second-best pass defense, giving up nearly 140 yards more on the ground than through the air. Post will also be looking for improvement in the red zone, as the Pioneers have moved the ball well down the field, ranking in the upper half of the PSAC in total offense but second-to-last in scoring. They have only converted on a league-worst 45.5 percent in the red zone, which includes three turnovers on downs and two missed FGs. Special teams appear to be fairly even, as both squads are even in net punting average at only 29.6 ypp. Both have also struggled in the kick return department as Cheyney averages just 16.6 ypr and C.W. Post is at just 15.1. Both teams also have similar punt return averages. The only area that one team appears to have a slight advantage in is the kicking department, as Cheyney’s Tyler Wilkinson is 3-for-3 on FGs and 3-for-4 on PATs, while Post’s Jon Korn is just 1for-3 on FGs and 4-for-6 on PATs.

Series/Game Notes California leads the all-time series with Gannon 1-0 after last year’s 42-24 victory in Erie...Cal is currently receiving votes in the AFCA poll.

Series/Game Notes C.W. Post leads Cheyney in the all-time series 1-0 after shutting out the Wolves 35-0 at Cheyney last year, in a game that was also played in Week 4.

A total of 85 points were scored in last year’s meeting, the third-highest combined points between both teams in a PSAC game last year, and this year, the teams are 1-2 in scoring offense entering the game. East Stroudsburg, which leads the league in first downs and third down conversions on offense, has been much more balanced between the run and pass this year than last. The passing game hasn’t missed a step with QB Matt Marshall second in total offense and WR Jeff Giglio tops in receiving ypg, the only receiver in the PSAC averaging over 100 ypg. Ed Kiser and Sam Shuman are also big play threats. RB Zach Krise, meanwhile, ranks second in the league with five rushing TD and nearly 130 ypg. The Red Raider defense may be the best the Warriors have gone up against yet this year as Ship has improved greatly since allowing 34 points in Week 1, having allowed 21 points in its last two games combined. LB Josh Simmons has been a beast on defense for the Raiders, compiling 20 tackles, and two interceptions, one returned for a TD, in the last two weeks. Shippensburg leads the league in fourth down conversions (4-for-5) while QB Chad DiFebbo is ranked second in the PSAC in passing efficiency. The Red Raiders also have a good balance between the run and pass and are ranked in the top five in the PSAC in both. The running game has been a platoon between Kevin Marshall and Kevin Herod, who each offer different styles. The passing game has spread out a bit more this year beyond top threat Mike Harris as Chase DiFebbo has nearly 60 ypg and Marshall is also a threat out of the backfield. The Raiders will likely need to throw the ball well as ESU has a strong rush defense so far but is giving up over 200 ypg in passing. Behind punter Kyler Ford, the Red Raiders are the top net punting team in the PSAC at 37.4 net yards per punt. By contrast, ESU has the worst net punting average in the league at just 23.4. That could come into play as ESU has not had a punt return for over a yard this year, while Chase DiFebbo averages 5.6 ypr for Ship. Both schools are solid in the kick return game, ESU with Kiser and Giglio and Ship with Marshall and Bryan Barley (27.0 ypr). Ford is 2-for-4 on FGs and 12-for-13 on PATs; ESU’s Drew Reinhard is 2-for-3 on FGs and 12-for-14 on PATs. Series/Game Notes Shippensburg leads the all-time series with East Stroudsburg 25-17-2...ESU won an overtime shootout last year at home by a 44-41 score...The Red Raiders have won seven of the last nine meetings in the series...The Warriors’ last win on the road in the series came in 2002...Giglio leads the PSAC in receiving ypg by a wide margin - over 40 yards.

Coaches IUP: Lou Tepper (4th yr.; 93-64-2 career record; 28-7 at IUP) Mercyhurst: Marty Schaetzle (8th yr.; 29-49 career record) What to Expect IUP has gotten off to its 3-0 start on the strength of its defense while its offense appears to be slowly coming around after a slow start. Mercyhurst has also been solid defensively after its opening game, but its offense is also off to a slow start and will be looking for increased production. QB Andrew Krewatch for IUP is yet to start putting up some of the eye-popping numbers he has put up in the past and he has completed only just over 50 percent of his passes, but the return of top receiver Mychal Skinner, who has 11 catches in just two games, has helped IUP’s passing game. Skinner, combined with younger receivers such as Javon Rowan and Roy-al Edwards, have helped IUP’s passing game vault up the PSAC rankings to sixth. The running game still has the potentially explosive Tobias Robinson but he has carried almost the entire load so far, although it hasn’t been too much of a problem as he now third in the league in rushing ypg. He may be that much more relied upon this week as Mercyhurst has the PSAC’s top pass defense. Mercyhurst’s offense has shown flashes so far this year but overall, is still looking to find its way. The Lakers do have the second-leading pass catching tight end in the PSAC in Josh Szeluga, who leads the team in receptions. The running back tandem of Ben Jennings and Gerald Anderson is combining for over 100 ypg but QB Joe Laffey, although he has the better completion percentage of the two QBs in this game, had thrown five picks in three games, which is tied for tops in the league. As a team, the Lakers have a turnover margin of -4, also last in the league, while IUP’s defense has gained seven turnovers, including four interceptions, one returned for a TD by Abe Satterfield in Week 1. The Lakers have two kickers that have seen action, with Josh Harold handling the kickoffs, averaging an impresssive 64.6 yards, and Robert Giambra handling most of the field goal and PAT duties. Combined, they are 1-for-2 on FGs and 8-for-9 on PATs. That kickoff average may come in handy as IUP has the top kickoff return unit in the league at 27.2 ypr behind Akwasi Owusu-Ansah’s 37.0 average. He is also averaging 8.6 yards on punt returns. Craig Burgess of IUP is perfect on both FGs and PATs and is also averaging 60 yards per kickoff while Jared Kaufmann and Pat Smith are combining for just a 34.9 yard average on punts, which could help Mercyhurst as the Lakers have a big-play threat in the punt return game in Paris Bruner, who is averaging 11.7 ypr. Series/Game Notes IUP leads Mercyhurst in the all-time series 1-0 after the Crimson Hawks topped the Lakers 42-10 at Indiana last year.

What to Expect West Chester appears poised to hit its stride after dominating most of the statistical categories last week vs. California despite losing the game. Millersville has shown some good improvement over last year in its first three games and can glean many positive things from its first three games, but appears to be overmatched still, at least statistically, against the Golden Rams. In order to stay in the game with West Chester, the Marauders will have to play to their strength on offense, which is the passing game. Despite having two running backs with two different styles of running, the Marauders are only averaging 75 ypg on the ground, so the majority of their offense has come through the pass, which is ranked fourth in the league. QB Bill Shirk is fourth in the PSAC in average passing yards and has the second-fewest interceptions (2) but also the second-fewest TD passes (2) of any QB in the top 10. Jamal Smith appears poised to be one of the top receivers and big play threats in the PSAC. The Golden Rams are experienced on defense. They have given up the secondfewest total yards in the PSAC but are only ranked in the middle in points allowed. The Golden Ram offense has been similar to their defense this year in that it generates a lot of yards but once again is only ranked in the middle of the league in points scored. The Rams do appear to have plenty of options all around on offense. A total of 13 players have received carries, four different players average over 20 rushing ypg, but none average more than 60. Steve Miller and Dan DePalma are the top options in the passing game, which has surprisingly had just one TD reception through three games. The number of options may present a problem for Millersville, which has improved on defense this year but is still ranked near the bottom of the league in most defensive categories. DePalma and Garland are both dynamic kick returners who have WCU ranked first in the PSAC in punt return average while MU’s Lou Brown is the top kick and punt returner in the league. Chris Hill (WCU) and John Banzhoff (MU) are both reliable kickers/punters.

What to Expect Clarion has shown an ability to put up some numbers on offense in three games so far, but its defense appears to still need improvement for the team to make the jump to the upper half of the PSAC West. Lock Haven returns to the site of its last win, two years ago in the season finale, still looking to find the right combination of players this year on both offense and defense. Ten players have made catches for LHU but none have gone for more than 23 yards and no one has more than four receptions or 40 yards receiving. The Bald Eagles, have played four different QBs in its first game but that number was down to three last week, but Jarret Kratzer received most of the snaps last week. Ibrahim Smith appears to be the only constant on offense as the starting RB ran for LHU’s first TD of the year last week. The Bald Eagles scored 21 points against the Golden Eagles last year, their second-highest point total of the year, so this could be the game that LHU’s offense gets going. Clarion’s offense has not had any trouble getting going at all, as the Golden Eagles rank third and fourth, respectively, in the league in passing and total offense. QB Tyler Huether ranks third in the PSAC in both passing and total offense and Clarion has three receivers - Jacques Robinson, Matt Foradora and Craig Bunney - ranked in the top 10 in the league in receiving ypg. The only downside to the Golden Eagle offense so far has been their running game but that looks to be improving as Alfonso Hoggard returned last week after missing a game. Clarion’s only problem has been scoring consistently, as the Eagles ranked second-to-last in the conference in red zone offense. They will look to change that against an LHU defense that is allowing over 450 yards and 46 points per game. Robert Mamula has appears to have developed into one of the top kickers in the PSAC for Clarion, as he is an impressive 5-of-6 on FGs and is perfect on PATs while averaging 58 yards on kickoffs. Nathan Conway and Huether, who sometimes punts, combined to average a decent 38.7 yards per punt. Hoggard gives Clarion a big play threat in the return game. LHU is yet to attempt a FG this year while punter Paul Causy is averaging a decent 37.1 yards on punts.

Series/Game Notes West Chester leads the all-time series with Millersville 59-17...The Golden Rams won last year’s meeting 41-10 at home, also in Week 4...WCU has won six straight in the series and seven of the last eight...WCU head coach Bill Zwaan has never lost to the Marauders...Millersville’s last win in the series came in 2002...If the game comes down to penalties, the Marauders will have an advantage, as they are the second-least penalized team in the league while WCU is the most.

Series/Game Notes Clarion leads Lock Haven 41-16-1 in the all-time series...The Golden Eagles won last year’s game 24-21 in Lock Haven, which broke a two-game losing streak to the Bald Eagles...Lock Haven’s last win in the series came in the final game of the 2007 season, a 17-14 overtime decision, which was also LHU’s last win overall prior to its current 13-game losing streak...Clarion leads the PSAC in sacks by (12) and is also tied for the fewest sacks allowed (2).

Coaches Slippery Rock: Dr. George Mihalik (22nd yr.; 144-85-4 career record) Edinboro: Scott Browning (4th yr.; 24-12 career record) What to Expect Slippery Rock and Edinboro are a combined 5-1 entering this game but both have been winning games in very different fashions. The Rock has won its games with its defense, while Edinboro has been winning games with its offense. The Rock has scored the third-most points in the PSAC this year but has done so only by gaining the 12th-most yards. Their passing game has also been particularly quiet despite its crop of talented and big play threats in the receiving game. QB Rocco Colavecchia has been solid, however, despite less than spectacular numbers as he has thrown just two interceptions to go along with four TDs. Rock’s strength on offense is its running game, led by Sayquan Scott-Mitchell’s 95.3 ypg. Something will likely give in the matchup with Edinboro’s defense, however, as the Fighting Scots are ranked near the bottom of the PSAC in defense, having given up the third-most yards of any team in the PSAC. Edinboro’s defense has been as prolific as was expected heading into the season behind QB Trevor Harris, who leads the league in both passing yards and total offense. The Scots’ running game, which struggled in the first two games, got a much-needed jolt last week with the addition of Junior Jabbie, who promptly ran for 138 yards in his first game. With Jabbie in the fold, the Scots’ offense will likely become more balanced in an attack that already ranks second overall and fourth in points. However, Shippensburg proved that Edinboro could be at least greatly limited on offense when the Red Raiders held the Fighting Scots scoreless for three quarters. The Rock’s defense has been solid, ranking in the upper half of the league in all categories, including fourth against the pass. The defense also scored the game-winning TD last week on an intercpetion by Robert Doiley. Doiley has also proven to be a good punt returner for Rock, averaging 8.2 ypr. Jeff Jackson averages 22.3 ypr on kick while C.J. Bahr is perfect on both FGs (5-for-5) and PATs. Kyle Witman is the leading punter in the PSAC at 44.5 ypp. Branden Williams was big play potential on kick returns for ‘Boro but is only averaging 17.0 ypr. Ryan Genco is averaging a decent 37.4 ypp while Alex Romanias is perfect on PATs but has only attempted two FGs, making one of them. Series/Game Notes Slippery Rock leads the all-time series with Edinboro 45-23-1...Edinboro won last year’s meeting 35-14 at Slippery Rock...The Rock won the previous two meetings prior to last year, and before that, the Fighting Scots won three straight...Edinboro has had 13 players catch a pass this year, while six different players have caught a TD...Edinboro is currently receiving votes in the AFCA poll.

Coaches Bloomsburg: Danny Hale (17th yr.; 179-59-1 career record; 139-46-1 at BU) Kutztown: Raymond Monica (4th yr.; 16-19 career record) What to Expect Through three weeks, Bloomsburg has played the best defense in the PSAC, as it has been most responsible for its 3-0 record. Kutztown’s defense has also been solid, while its offense as expected has been based around its strong rushing attack, while most of its defense has been solid as well. Bloomsburg’s defense has been dominating in the first three games of the season. The Huskies leads the PSAC in scoring and total defense, have given up the fewest first downs of any league defense (36). They are yet to allow more than 10 points in a game and its defense has a league-best nine takeaways. The Huskies wil lbe up for a stern test against a Kutztown running game that is the best in the league so far behind Dontay Wilson’s league-leading 132.7 ypg and QB Shane Martin’s 51.7 ypg. A pair of freshman receivers in Chris McCormick and Jake Cahill have emerged to be the top two options in the passing game, but the Golden Bears have run almost 90 more times than they have passed it this year. Kutztown’s PSAC-leading rush defense could get its biggest test of the year in the form of Bloomsburg’s running game, although it has not been near the level of last year’s in the first three games. If the running game does not produce more, the Huskies may find it easier to throw the ball against the Golden Bears, who are giving up nearly 200 yards through the air each game and are the only team in the PSAC that is yet to record an interception. However, last year’s East Freshman of the Year, Derrick Price, is scheduled to return this week after missing the first three games to help the running game that has been thin in the first three games. Both teams are strong on special teams. Two of the best kick returners in the league will match up with BU’s Jesse Cooper and KU’s Kendell Coleman, although Cooper was injured last week and his status is uncertain. Jon Koenig (BU) and Matt Dineen (KU) both double as kickers and punters. Both are ranked in the top 10 in the league in punting are are a combined 8-for-11 on FGs. Series/Game Notes Bloomsburg leads Kutztowns in the all-time series 41-20-1...The Huskies won last year’s game 31-21 at home and have won 16 straight in the series dating back to 1993...Kutztown’s last win in the series came at Bloomsburg in 1992, and the Golden Bears’ last win at home over Bloom came in 1991...Turnovers could play a big part in the game as Bloomsburg leads the league in turnover margin at +5 while Kutztown is tied for 14th at -3.
