PSAC Football - NCAA Playoff Notes - 11/25/08
NCAA Super Regional One Rankings (Week-by-Week)
Bloom, Cal Meet for Spot in NCAA Semifinals Bloomsburg will be playing in the NCAA quarterfinals for the second time in the last three years and for the fifth time overall. They are seeking their fourth berth in the NCAA semifinals. California (Pa.) will be making its second straight appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals and they will be seeking their second-ever berth into the NCAA semifinals. Bloom last appeared in the semifinals in 2006 while Cal was there last year. PSAC Places Three Teams in NCAA Playoffs Bloomsburg, California (Pa.) and West Chester were selected to the NCAA playoffs out of the PSAC. This marks the second straight year and the fourth time in the last five seasons that the PSAC has placed at least three teams in the NCAA playoffs. It marks the second straight playoff appearance for California (Pa.) and the fifth straight playoff appearance for West Chester. For Bloomsburg, it is the third playoff appearance in the last four years. A PSAC team has won the regional championship to advance to the NCAA semifinals in each of the last four years, with four different PSAC teams being crowned regional champions. This will also mark the second straight year and the third time in four years that a PSAC team will take on Southern Connecticut in the playoffs. California topped the Owls in the second round last year while East Stroudsburg topped the Owls in the first round in 2005. Two Super Region One Finalists for Harlon Hill Trophy From PSAC Two players from the PSAC are among the eight finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy, annually awarded to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division II. The PSAC snagged both of the two finalist spots out of Super Region One, with Edinboro’s Trevor Harris and West Chester’s Mike Washington. That duo, along with California (Pa.) quarterback Kevin McCabe, were among the six candidates for the award out of Super Region One. Harris and Washington will now be on the national ballot for the award, which will be given out on the eve of the NCAA Division II national championship game on December 13. Five PSAC Teams in Poll For Fourth Straight Week - Most of Any Conference The final poll of the regular season marked the fourth straight week that the PSAC has had five teams ranked in the AFCA Top 25 poll, the most of any conference in the poll and for the second time this year, two more teams than any other conference in the poll. Bloomsburg, California (Pa.), IUP, Edinboro and West Chester all remained ranked this week Regional No. 1 seed Bloomsburg stayed at No. 14 for the second straight week while regional No. 2 seed and PSAC champion Cal remained at No. 7 for the third straight week. West Chester fell just three spots from No. 17 to No. 20 following its loss to Cal in the PSAC Championship game last week. Edinboro and IUP saw their seasons end as neither team received a playoff berth but both moved up in the poll, Edinboro from No. 20 to No. 16 and IUP from No. 18 to No. 15. Bloom, Cal and IUP have been ranked for all 12 weeks of the season this year, while Edinboro is ranked for the ninth straight week. West Chester is ranked for the fourth straight week and the seventh week overall this year after being ranked in the first three weeks of the season before falling out for the next five. East Stroudsburg is receiving votes for the seventh straight week, as the Warriors have the second-most of votes in that category. . The five schools in the poll is the most of any conference for the fourth straight week. The PSAC has now had the most or has been tied for the most schools in the poll with for 10 weeks this year, having four schools in six of those weeks and now five for four weeks, while the MIAA had five ranked in the two other weeks. In the D2football.com poll, the PSAC had an astounding six teams ranked as East Stroudsburg joined the poll at No. 24 to join No. 8 Cal, No. 14 Bloomsburg, No. 15 IUP, No. 17 Edinboro and No. 22 West Chester. Washington Makes History, Breaks Two PSAC Records, NCAA Mark West Chester’s Mike Washington became only the third wide receiver in all-division college football history to accumulate 1,000 receiving yards in four straight seasons as he went over the 1,000-yard mark in the final game of the regular season. Earlier this year, he broke a PSAC record with his 51st career touchdown reception against East Stroudsburg on October 4. Then, against C.W. Post on October 11, he broke another PSAC record by surpassing 4,093 yards to set the record for receiving yards. Both records were formerly held by East Stroudsburg’s Evan Prall (2003-06). He also tied an NCAA record by catching a pass for his 44th straight game, tying an NCAA Division II record that he broke the next week. He ended his career last week by having caught a pass in 49 straight games. PSAC Owns Two of Top Five NCAA Rushing Performances in 2008 Two running backs from the PSAC own the two of the top five running performances in the country this year in Division II. West Chester’s D’Andre Webb owns the second-best single-game performance for rushing yards after he ran for 306 yards against Millersville on September 20. Millersville’s Cardoza Jacks turned in the fifthbest single-day performance for a D-II running back this year when he ran for 274 yards against Cheyney on October 11. Ironically, neither Webb nor Jacks began the year as the first string running backs on their respective teams. Webb began as the second stringer and has since missed time after he was injured following his 300-yard day, while Jacks received the start as the third-string running back after the Marauders’ top two backs on the depth chart sat out with injuries. He finished the year as the first-string back and followed up his 274yard game with three-straight 100-yard games. National Leaders A few individuals from the PSAC lead the country in their respective categories through the second week of the playoffs and all have a good shot at finishing the year leading the nation in them. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah of IUP co-leads the country in overall interceptions with eight, although he is second in interceptions per game.

Nick Krut of East Stroudsburg leads the nation in punting average for the 10th straight week at 46.04, nearly two yards in front of the second place punter. The Warriors also lead in net punting at 39.67 ypp for the second straight week. Bloomsburg is tied for first place in fewest interceptions on offense with just three picks and is also tied for fewest turnovers lost with just 11. PSAC Sweeps Defensive National Player of the Week Awards in First Two Weeks One week after Clarion defensive linemen Jimmy Simmons was named the D2football.com Defensive Player of the Week for week one, East Stroudsburg linebacker Matt Freed took the same honor in week two after making 15 tackles, three tackles for loss and recording two sacks against Gannon to help the Warriors to a 2-0 start to the season. This came a week after Simmons got the same honor for his performance in Clarion’s first game of the year back on August 28th against Fairmont State. Simmons, a senior who missed all of last year due to injury, recorded 14 tackles and five tackles for loss to go along with one sack and a pass break up in Clarion’s tough last-second 23-20 loss to Fairmont. Simmons was an honorable mention All-American in 2006. Additionally, on October 15, Slippery Rock’s offensive line was selected as the D2football.com Offensive Players of the Week after The Rock ran for 451 yards and had three backs go over 100 yards in a 49-14 win over Clarion. East Stroudsburg’s Matt Marshall was selected as the national Offensive Player of the Week on November 4 after racking up 258 yards passing and two touchdowns in a relief role for the injured starter. Douds Sets PSAC Victory Mark East Stroudsburg head coach Denny Douds, who is in his 35th season as coach at ESU, won his 213th career game in week four on September 20 with ESU’s thrilling 44-41 overtime win over Shippensburg. That broke the all-time record for coaching wins in the PSAC, passing Gene Carpenter, who coached at Millersville from 19702000 and won 212 games.
PSAC Team Notes Bloomsburg Huskies The Huskies have advanced to the NCAA regional finals for the second time in three years and for the third time this decade after a 28-21 win over West Chester. The Huskies are 2-0 in regional finals, beating Northwood in 2000 (38-14) and Shepherd in 2006 (24-21) ... Bloomsburg is now 5-1 in home NCAA playoff games ... Jesse Cooper scored his third touchdown of the season when he returned an interception 62 yards for a score against West Chester. Cooper has returned two interceptions for scores this season and returned a kickoff 91 yards for a score. For his career Cooper has scored seven touchdowns ... Placekicker Jon Koenig broke the school record for career extra points when he hit on four against the Golden Rams. He now has 140 for his career breaking the mark of 139 set by Tom Boop (1996-99) ... Bloomsburg has reached 11 wins in a season for the fourth time in school history and for the third time in four years ... Over the weekend the Huskies had one of their NCAA playoff records broken, but that was a good thing. Bloomsburg's record of allowing the most points in an NCAA playoff game (63 vs. Delta State in the 2000 national championship game) was broken when West Texas A & M gave up 93 points to Abilene Christian.
California Vulcans The Vulcans advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship season for the secondstraight season on Saturday with a 48-7 win over Seton Hill … Quarterback Kevin McCabe set a pair of single-season school records after throwing for 253 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-24 attempts … McCabe now holds the school marks for passing (2,859) and touchdown passes (28) in a single season … Wide receiver Marcel Pestano posted 140 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark this season … He is within reach of breaking the single-season records for receptions and receiving yards … Head coach John Luckhardt moved into sole possession of first place in school history with a record 56 career wins … The Vulcans allowed the Griffins only 211 yards of total offense, almost 175 yards less than their season average … Cal U has won 10 straight games since losing in Week 2 at Bloomsburg.
West Chester Golden Rams West Chester fell to Bloomsburg, 28-21, in the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs, bringing an end to the marvelous career of WR Mike Washington ... He finished his career third all-time in Division II in receiving yards and touchdown catches while finishing sixth all-time across all divisions in those same categories ... Washington totaled 215 catches for 4,715 yards and 58 career TDs ... In Saturday's game, he moved past three people on the all divisions receiving yards chart, including NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice ... QB Joe Wright threw for a PSAC high 3,336 yards and 28 touchdowns on the season ... His passing yards total ranks fifth all-time at WCU, and his 28 TD passes tie him for fifth.
Clarion Breaks PSAC West Losing Streak With its narrow 24-21 win over Lock Haven on October 18, Clarion not only avenged a loss from last year, but the Golden Eagles broke a 19-game PSAC West losing streak. Prior to the win, Clarion had not won a PSAC West game since the 2005 season.

The Coaches John Luckhardt is in his seventh year as head coach at California (Pa.), where he holds a record of 53-23. Overall, he is in his 24th year as a collegiate head coach and has a career record of 193-60-2. He has guided the Vulcans to their second straight NCAA playoff appearance and their second straight regional championship game. Danny Hale is in his 16th year as head coach at Bloomsburg, where he holds a record of 136-45-1 and has now led the Huskies to the playoffs in three of the last four seasons and six appearances overall under him. Overall, he is in his 21st year as a college head coach and has a career record of 176-58-1. What to Expect Both teams are extremely solid on both sides of the ball. In the teams’ first meeting, Bloomsburg won by dominating on the ground. Despite having just a threeand-a-half minute edge in the time of possession, the Huskies ran for 325 yards and passed for just eight. Bloom also won the turnover battle, gaining two turnovers while not losing a single turnover of its own. One of those turnovers was an interception return by Oscar Rivera, which ended up being the difference in a game that was won by just a touchdown. The same thing happened in Bloom’s win last week over West Chester, as an interception return by Jesse Cooper turned out to be the difference in a seven-point win in which Bloom also won the turnover battle, 3-1. Expect the same type of game if Bloom is to defeat Cal for the second time this year, especially if all of the offensive and defensive statistics hold to their averages for both teams. Whichever teams wins the turnover battle will likely win the game if this is the case. The Huskies have the top turnover margin in the conference at +15 and have thrown a league and national-low three interceptions. They have also lost just eight fumbles, tied for a league-low, for just 11 turnovers, which is tied with two other teams for the fewest in the country. Cal does a decent job of holding onto the ball as well, as the Vulcans have also only coughed it up eight times and have lost just 15 turnovers, tied for the second-fewest in the league and their +7 turnover margin is fourth in the league. Hanging onto the ball longer may also be a key in deciding who comes out on top in what should be another close game. Bloom and Cal rank third and fourth in the PSAC in average time of possession, Bloom at 32:01 and Cal at 31:44. If Bloom can run the ball like it did in the first meeting, when Derrick Price ran for 169 yards, Kenny Domzalski added 82 and Dan Latorre also chipped in with 67, including a 49-yard touchdown run, then the Huskies can keep the ball out of the hands of Cal’s potent offense, which has put up at least 40 points in seven games this year, including in its last two contests. The 17 points scored in the first meeting with Bloom was tied for the fewest the Vulcans have scored this year. That game and the Vulcans win over Mercyhurst in week 10 were the only times this year they have been held under 20 points. If the Vulcans can hold it for longer, then they will likely have used top back Daine Williams extensively along with Windell Brown and Freddie Bacco, who have seen increased carries as of late due to Brandon Lombardy’s absence. This is a slight chance that Lombardy could be back for Saturday. Both teams are also very solid on special teams. Cal leads the league with a 27.4 average on kick returns, led by Bacco and Brown. Bloom counters with the explosive Jessie Cooper to average 23.1 ypr. Cooper also saw some action on offense last week in addition to his interception return for a TD. If there is one area that could possibly point in Cal’s favor, it would be in the punting game, where Cal, behind Derek Fiorenza, averages 37.1 net ypp, while Bloom averages just 31.8 net ypp. The Vulcans also average 12.6 ypr on punts, while the Huskies are at 8.0 ypr. Series/Game Notes Series: Bloomsburg leads the all-time series with California (Pa.) 11-7-2 Last Meeting: Bloomsburg 24, California (Pa.) 17 (9-6-08 at Bloomsburg, Pa.) This will be Bloomsburg’s second rematch this year in as many weeks, only this week, it will be the Vulcans looking to avenge their only loss of the season, which came back in week two....Bloom avenged its only loss of the year last week by defeating West Chester, who had handed the Huskies their only loss of the year back in week 10....Daine Williams of Cal needs just 51 rushing yards for his second straight 1,000-yard season....Price needs just 37 yards to surpass IUP’s Tobias Robinson as the PSAC’s top overall rusher, although Robinson appears to have won the rushing yards per game title at 120.3 ypr.
