27 Coulsdon Road Hedge End Southampton S030 OJS To: Peter Whitlock From: Muriel Allen 27 August 2002 re: Newsletter June 2002 I read with interest your article on the Will of John Whitlock of Pitton, Wilts 1816 and your comment "Therefore this John Whitlock is son of Henry & Susana Read and the one who married Phebe Redman Nov 22 1757 at Pitton." May I challenge this statement? Whilst agreeing!!. John Whitlock married Phebe Redman Nov 22 1757 I would query whether this was the John bp Dec 13 1733, son of Henry & Susana Hed (not Read as stated). There is another John bp Oct 23 1728, son of Robert & his 2nd wife, Elizabeth (Head), whom I would suggest is probably the one who married Phebe. I have to acknowledge that this suggestion is not my own, but has come about by the examination of manorial records within the Fox-Strangways family papers in the Dorset Record Office by a Colin White. Both Quintin and I have corresponded with Colin as he is also 'a Whitlock'. I put my doubts to Colin and I think the best way to explain his evidence is to attach a copy of the relevant extracts from his own notes. I am grateful to Colin for his permission to use his notes. The copy of an extract from the family tree of Robert attached may also help. The sorting of the Whitlock families from PittonlFarley/surrounding areas of Wiltshire, particularly in the 1600/1700s becomes a nightmare and the use of the words 'possibly' and 'probably' is deliberate as certainty seems hard to prove. I am sending a copy of this to Quintin, suggesting he might like any reply to be published along with this letter. Now to easier matters! Can I have copies of the following please: X4156/1 GenForum trom Lindsay Watson re Walter Francis & May Whitlock ofLdn & Eastleigh, Ham X4418/3 Emails from ColinWhitelock re George C & Louisa H Whitelock of Croydon & Portsmouth X4455/1 Email from Carol Magnuson re Ernest E Whitlock b 1904 of Southampton,Ham NP681 D.Telegraph Jul17 2001 obit of Pauline R Williams of ....re Hugh Whitlock of Milford on Sea NP684 London Guardian Nov 7 2001 obit ofWm.Whitlock from David Whitlock Yours sincerely

Notes In the land survey of 1720 William Head leased land for "2 lives in being" On 20/5/1727 William leased (by indenture) land from Sir Stephen Fox as follows: a messuage or tenement and a total of 12 acres of land in Pitton, previously occupied by John Head. The lease was granted for the lives of William Head. Elizabetli his daughter now wife of Robert Whitlock of Pitton. and Jonathan son of Elizabeth and Robert Whitlock. On I 1/5/1733 William signed a legal declaration giving his son-in-law Robert Whitlock a plot of ground on his 1,1l1dto . build himself a house. At the annual meeting of the Pitton and Farley Court on 26/5/1748 it was recorded that "Will Head deeased sence ye last court" (held 12 months before) The survey of the Manor of Pitton of 1766 records the tenant of lease No.32 as John North. The property comprised a house. barn. gardens. (lrable land. pasture and common for 2 beasts. The lease was updated to show the lives of Elizabeth (dead) wife of Robert Whitlock aged ()1of Pitton and Jonathan Whitlock son of Robert and Elizabeth aged 42. On 27/4/ l782 the leasehold on the cottage and garden passed from Jonathan Whitlock (who was already dead - see note added to the Rent Roll of Pitton in 1776). into the hands of (his brother) John Whitlod and the lives of his three sons, ie. John the younger 19. James 16 & George II. On 5/4/1797 the leasehold for No.32 (for ONE messuage and 12 acres of land) passed from the current tenant Eli/.abeth Rumbold (previously William Head) to John White(l77 1) and eventually on to Henry White on 29/1/1886 -see WHITE family tree.
