PGSA Classic Tryout Policy The intent and goal of the PGSA is to field Classic teams at each age group (boys and girls) u11-18 which are competitive statewide. It is also the goal of the PGSA to place each child on a team which best fits and promotes the skills of the player. In order to further these goals, the PGSA will implement the following policies at tryouts. -Each player is encouraged (but not required) to try out for the team offered in his/her age group. -A player is not permitted to try out for a team younger in age group. A player is permitted to try out for an older team group. -At pre-registration, the player must make the PGSA registrar aware of his/her intent to try out for an older team by submitting a play up request form prior to tryouts. (This form can be found at the end of this document). -If a Classic team is not offered in a player’s true age group then the player may be allowed to play for an older Classic team if he or she is selected. -If a Classic team is offered in the player’s true age group but the player nevertheless wishes to try out for an older Classic team, then the 25% rule will apply. The player will need to be evaluated and judged to be in the top 25% as compared to the players on the older age team. If the player is not considered to be in the top 25%, he or she will not be permitted to play on the older team and will need to be considered for a spot in his/her own age group. -The PGSA will not implement a “grandfather” clause so it makes no difference which team a child played on the year before. An example is given below: A true U12 player played on the U13 Classic team this past season. Tryouts are now being held for the Fall 2015/Spring 2016 seasons and a Classic team is being offered in the player’s true age group. The player nevertheless wishes to “play up” on his same team for the upcoming year. At tryouts, the older team coaches determine they will carry a roster of 17 players and this younger player is judged to be the 6 th best player at the tryout. RESULT: The player is not allowed to play on the older team and will be required to compete for a position on the Classic team in his true age group. On a 17 player roster, the top 25% will include the top 5 players (17 x .25 = 4.25 rounded up to 5 players). Note: if there was no Classic team offered in the player’s true age group then he would be allowed to play on the older team since the top 25% rule would not be applicable.

With this policy, the PGSA aspires that each age group wil field competitive teams while allowing players who have exceptional soccer talents the opportunity to play at a higher level. It is possible that circumstances arise which are not addressed or easily answered by PGSA written policy. Some age groups may have plenty of talent while others struggle to find players. In rare instances, a modification of the above policy is required in order to accommodate the needs of an age group. The Team Development Committee oversees tryouts and has final decision-making authority to implement and when necessary modify PGSA tryout policy on a case-bycase basis. Furthermore, any decision to dual roster a player (play on 2 different teams during the same season) must be reviewed and approved by the Team Development Committee and comply with NCYSA roster rules.

Request to Try Out for a Team Above Player’s Appropriate Age Group Use this form if your player wishes to try out to “play up” with an older team. IMPORTANT: This form MUST be completed PRIOR to tryouts. DEADLINE for submission of this form is May 16th at 5 PM. Absolutely no “play up” requests will be considered on the night of tryouts. Fax form to: 252-413-7365 or email form to: [email protected] Please refer to the birth date information on www.PGSAsoccer.com under the tryouts tab if you are unsure of the appropriate age group for your player. Please note that decisions regarding playing up will be based on several factors some of which include player’s abilities, grade level appropriateness for the team, and whether or not there is a classic team in their true age group. If there is a Classic team in their age group then players must be in the top 25% skill level of the older age team to be chosen to play up. Please understand that if your player does try out to play up and is not selected then he/she may be considered for an age appropriate team but only if a roster spot is still available. Completion of this form acknowledges understanding of the PGSA tryout policy and 25% rule. See PGSA website to review entire tryout policy.
