Special Pilgrimage Guests — The Most Rev’d George Carey, One Hundred and Third Archbishop of Canterbury (retired) with Lady Eileen Carey
current Episcopal Visitor and Pilgrimage host, Bishop Bill Love, in welcoming special guests for the Sesquicentennial Pilgrimage Week, including Lord and Lady Carey, retired Archbishop of Canterbury, and our Malawian Sisters’ Episcopal Visitor, Bishop Fanuel Magangani.
The Malawi Sesquicentennial Pilgrimage Fund The Sisters in Greenwich give one third of their unrestricted income to the CSM Luwinga Sisters’ Mission in Malawi., and still it is not enough to educate the adolescent orphans of their neighborhood. If you cannot make the Pilgrimage to Greenwich to pray and be with us, perhaps you would consider a gift to the Sesquicentennial Fund that will allow us to purchase a new four-wheel drive Toyota RAV4 to transport both the Sisters and orphans going to school. Bishop Bill and Karen Love with Mother Miriam and Sister Mary Elizabeth would be most honored to take your gift to the Malawian Sisters next September on their next steps of pilgrimage during this sesquicentennial year.
Pilgrimage Day-Trip Options Option 1 Pilgrimage to the St. Bruno Scenic Viewing Center, Charterhouse of the Transfiguration, Mount Equinox, VT. Founded in 1950, the Charterhouse is the home of the only Carthusian monastery in North America. Eremitic in ethos, visitors can only glimpse the monastery from the scenic drive, but the Viewing Center tells the story of the monks. Mt. Equinox is the highest peak in the Taconic Range and on a clear day the scenic lookout offers an unparalleled vista of mountains and valleys.
Option 2 Pilgrimage to Mount Equinox with a picnic at the Viewing Center followed by a tour of the Orthodox Monastery of New Skete in Cambridge, NY, followed by tea with the monks and nuns. The New Skete chapels exhibit extraordinary icons, with the Chapel of Holy Wisdom featuring an open iconostasis and images of western ecumenical figures including Archbishop Michael Ramsey and Dorothy Day. The monks are renowned for their breeding and training of German Shepherd dogs, the nuns for their cheesecake.
St. Mary’s Sesquicentennial
Pilgrimage Celebrating 150 Years of Vowed Monastic Family Life in the Community of St. Mary
Option 3 A Pilgrimage to the Park-McCullough House, North Bennington, VT, and the Bennington Museum. For those s interested in CSM history, a visit to the birthplace of Sister Mary Veronica — whose art graces our convent chapel and home — is an option. The daughter of a governor of Vermont, Sister acquired classical training in the arts in Europe before giving up a life of privilege to become a religious. CSM pilgrims will be able to see some of her work at the Bennington Museum, which also features a collection of works by the famous local artist, Grandma Moses.
