Junior or Two-Year Colleges – awards associate degrees and certificates; some programs allow students to transfer to four-year schools to complete a bachelors degree; some programs prepare students for technical careers o Examples: Ivy Tech, Vincennes University Four-Year Universities – award some associate degrees, but primarily offer bachelor and masters degrees, and doctorate or advanced degrees o Examples: Franklin College, Purdue University, IUPUI, Butler University Proprietary Schools – award certificates and some associate degrees; operated for a profit o Examples: Harrison College, Lincoln Tech

Open admission – admit nearly all interested students who have a high school degree or GED o Examples: Ivy Tech, Vincennes; (program specific) Rolling admission – students are admitted or denied as soon as their application is processed; usually within 4-6 weeks Early Decision admission – binding and means that if a student is admitted via early decision, they must attend that university and withdraw all other college applications Early Action admission – non-binding and students are given an admission decision early, but aren’t required to commit to that university

Associate – requires completion of a two-year course of study Bachelor – requires completion of a four-year course of study (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science) Graduate – requires completion of study beyond the Bachelor degree o Examples: Masters or Doctorate degrees
Curriculum/Credits • • •
Major – the subject in which students academics focus on, particularly during the last 2 years of college Transfer – transfer student = a student who comes to a college after previous study at another college; transfer credit = the courses a student took through another college Credit hour – the amount of credit given for a college course; most college classes are worth 3 credit hours (some intro classes are 1-2 credits, while other lab or more intensive classes may be 4 credits)
