History
U
AYSO was established in the Los Angeles area in 1964 with nine teams. It was the dream of a group of devoted soccer enthusiasts who started the organization in a garage. Today, AYSO has 50,000 teams and over 500,000 players. It also employs 50 people at the AYSO National Office in Torrance, Calif.
Structure AYSO’s grassroots program begins with a community-based league called a Region. Our region is Region 769. West Oahu was chartered in 1991. A Regional Commissioner and board of directors supervise each Region. Regions in close proximity make up an Area. Region 769 is in Area E. Area E consists of Aiea, Mililani, Hickam, Pearl City, Leeward, North Shore, Laie, and West Oahu. Each Area has an Area Director who is responsible for activities of the regions as well as area activities. Areas form a Section. Our section is Section 7. Section 7 is comprised of 3 Areas (A, E, and O). Area A consists of regions on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai. Area O consists of regions in Kailua, Kaneohe, Diamond Head and Honolulu. U
Mission AYSO is a nationwide non-profit organization that develops and delivers quality youth soccer programs in a fun, family environment based on AYSO’s six philosophies. Everyone Plays – Our program’s goal is for kids to play soccer-so we mandate that every player on every team must play at least half of every game. Balanced Teams – Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it is fair and more fun when teams of equal ability play. Open Registration – Our program is open to all children between 4 and 19 years of age who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing. Positive Coaching – Encouragement of player effort provides for a greater enjoyment by the player and ultimately leads to better-skilled and bettermotivated players. Good Sportsmanship – We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO. Player Development – We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game. Team Balancing One of the basic principles of AYSO is Balanced Teams. We attempt to balance teams by having age group coordinators familiar with the players create equally balanced teams out of the players who register. We use player evaluations from the previous season to assist in this process. This information is entered into Blue Sombrero, which will use that information to establish teams. In the past, some Coaches and Parents have sought to manipulate the balancing system in hopes of combining stronger players on a certain team. In general, NO REQUESTS TO HAVE CERTAIN COACHES AND/OR PLAYERS TOGETHER WILL BE HONORED. The only player guaranteed on your team is your child.
An exception to the above policy is the “GO GET” program. This is a Spring Season program. It allows two players to be on the same team if an experienced player brings a player who is in the same age division/gender into the program who has NEVER played soccer before. Your registration fee includes U

In Case of Injury In case of severe injury - Do not move the injured player. Send someone to the Admin Tent for help. AYSO policy is to transport rather than treat. For minor injuries, which may require medical attention: report to admin tent for an Incident Report form. If utilizing Soccer Accident Insurance (SAI), parents are responsible for $1000 deductible and for turning in all bills for treatment. A doctor’s certificate is required to resume playing. How can you HELP? U
We are always in need of volunteers. If you are undecided, fill out a volunteer form anyway. Go to www.ayso769.org to complete an online volunteer application. Please consider helping in any way you can, it really makes the season go smoothly!
As a parent, you play a special role in contributing to the needs and development of youngsters. Through your encouragement and good example, you can help assure that all the boys and girls learn good sportsmanship and self-discipline. In AYSO, young people learn to work together, to sacrifice for the good of the team, to enjoy winning and deal appropriately with defeat – all while becoming physically fit and healthy. Best of all, they have fun! Support your child U
Supporting your child by giving encouragement and showing interest in their team is very important. Help your child work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship in every game. Teach your child that hard work and an honest effort are often more important than victory – that way your child will always be a winner despite the outcome of the game! We encourage your child to grow as an athlete, to develop a sense of teamwork and good sportsmanship, to gain self-confidence, self-esteem, and most of all—to have fun! Always be positive U
Parents serve as role models for their children. Become aware of this and work to be a positive role model. Applaud good plays by your child’s team as well as good plays by the opposing team. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from youth sports activities. Remember: Your child wants to have fun Remember that your child is the one playing soccer, not you. It’s very important to let children establish their own goals – to play the game for themselves. Take care not to impose your own standards and goals on them. Don’t put too heavy a burden on your child to win games. Surveys reveal that 72% of children would rather play for a losing team than ride the bench for a winning team. Children play for the fun of playing. Reinforce positive behavior U
Positive reinforcement is the best way to help your child achieve their goals and their natural fear of failure. Nobody likes to make mistakes. If your child does make one, remember it’s all part of learning, so encourage your child’s efforts and point out the good things your child accomplished. Don’t be a sideline coach or referee U
Coaches and referees are usually parents just like you. They volunteer their time, to help make your child’s youth soccer experience, a positive one. They need your support too. That means refraining from coaching or refereeing from the sidelines.
As a volunteer organization there’s always an opportunity for you to take your interest in coaching or refereeing to the next level and become one yourself! Safe Haven Program U
AYSO is the first youth sports organization to create a formal program to comply with the Child Protection Act and the Volunteer Protection Act called “Safe Haven”. The goal is to stop child abuse, educate or remove its perpetrators, and screen out predators before they get into the program. We do this by incorporating 4 key elements: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Promote Education and Awareness Create Policies Screen Volunteers Train Volunteers
Every volunteer coach, referee, team parent and board member must be Safe Haven certified, and it begins by completing a volunteer form and attending job specific classes. After completing the volunteer form, print 1 copy and submit them to your Age Group Coordinator. FALL SELECT PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Fall Select program is a select program that has been implemented by AYSO that is one level above traditional recreational soccer. The objective of the program is to provide top players in the 10U-12U divisions within each region a more competitive playing experience than traditionally offered through the recreational program alone. Fall Select is designed to provide a more challenging level of play for those players who possess the appropriate interest, skills and abilities and to enhance each player's experience and individual growth through the game of soccer while retaining the spirit and organization of AYSO. The goal is to strengthen AYSO by retaining players and volunteers in additional primary programs operated under the AYSO philosophies. Below are the guidelines of Fall Select. Try-outs will be held in June/July. Everyone on the team plays. Guaranteed 2 quarters of play in every game. The teams must be constituted with the goal of creating competitive balance. Selection to the teams is based on coach selection and open tryouts. SPRING SELECT PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Spring Select program is designed to allow AYSO players who have demonstrated soccer ability and displayed an attitude of fair play, enthusiasm and cooperative team spirit, an opportunity to participate in a more competitive level of play with players who have similar ability. The program is available for players in the 10U-12U divisions where there are volunteers interested in coaching. This is an
AYSO program that combines with other local AYSO regions. Teams may also travel throughout the season to participate in AYSO tournaments. While the select season may offer inter-regional play and a higher level of competition all participants must uphold the AYSO National rules and philosophies. It is important that all teams recognize that good sportsmanship and positive coaching are not set-aside during this season. Everyone on the team plays. Guaranteed 2 quarters of play in every game. Tools for Parents The following ideas may be helpful for being a supportive AYSO parent.
Conversations before the games • •
Tell your child you love him/her regardless of the outcome. Tell him or her “Go for it, give it your best shot and have fun!”
During the game •
•
Understand that kids are over-stimulated during games. The coach may be giving instructions, opponents and teammates are talking, the crowd is cheering, and the referee is blowing the whistle. To a youth sports participant, the atmosphere is much like that of a fighter pilot with enemy jets racing all around. Do not yell instructions to your child during the game because it only adds to the confusion. Sometimes the best thing you can do as a parent is to be quiet. Cheer and acknowledge good plays by both teams.
After the game • • • • •
Thank the officials for doing a difficult job. Thank the coaches for their efforts. After a difficult loss, recognize that it is not a good time to question a coach. Thank your opponents for a good game. Congratulate your child and his or her teammates for their efforts. Compliment individual players on good plays they made in the game.
During the car ride home • • •
Point out a good play your child made during the game. Avoid criticizing or correcting mistakes. Ask open-ended questions about how the game was played rather than how many points were scored. Here are examples of open-ended questions that might apply: ¸ Did you have fun? ¸ Did you give it your best effort? ¸ What did you learn from the game? ¸ What was the best play you made and how did it feel? ¸ Did you bounce back from your mistakes?
AYSO recognizes the efforts and advancements made by the Positive Coaching Alliance in Honor of the Game. The Kids Zone Parent Pledge is adapted from Positive Coaching Alliance's Parent Pledge (www.positivecoach.org)

Kids Zone Parent Pledge Please read, initial each item, sign at the end, and return to the coach or the appropriate AYSO volunteer. 1.
I pledge to be on time or early when bringing my child to his/her practices and games. I understand that it may be uncomfortable for my child to be late to a game or practice and that he/she is subject to physical risk if not provided with adequate time to warm up. I understand that I am encouraged to stay during practices and games, but if I do not, I will be there when he/she is finished. Being punctual shows respect for the coach, who has other time commitments, and it tells my child that he/she is my top priority. ______
2.
I understand that the top three reasons kids play sports are to have fun, make new friends and learn new skills. I understand that the game is for the kids, and I will encourage my child to have fun and keep sport in its proper perspective. I understand that athletes do their best when they are emotionally healthy, so I will be positive and supportive. ______
3.
I will redefine what it is to be a “Winner” in my conversations with my child. Winners are people who make the maximum effort, continue to learn and improve, and do not let mistakes, or fear of making mistakes, discourage them. I understand that mistakes are an inevitable part of any game and that people learn from their mistakes. I understand that all children are born with different abilities and that the true measure of success is not how my child compares to others, but how he/she is doing in comparison to his/her best self. _____
4.
I will “Honor the Game.” I understand the importance of setting a good example of sportsmanship for my child. I will show respect for all involved in the game including coaches, players, opponents, opposing fans, and referees. I understand that officials, coaches, and players make mistakes. If the referee makes a call I do not agree with, I will refrain from questioning, insulting or making personal attacks against him or her. _____
5.
I understand that games can be exciting for my child as he/she deals with the fast-paced action of the game, responds to opponents, referees, teammates, and listens to coaches. I will not yell out instructions. During the game, I will make only sportsmanlike comments that encourage my child and other players on both teams. ______
6.
I will not make negative comments about the game, coaches, referees or teammates in my child's presence. This sets a bad example, which can negatively influence my child's motivation and overall experience. I agree to act in a sportsmanlike manner and make every effort to foster a friendly and nonviolent atmosphere. ______
I agree to honor the AYSO Parent Pledge in my words and actions.
