USA HOCKEY JUNIOR HOCKEY SUPPLEMENT

Player Handbook 2015-16 Season

Player Responsibility The Junior Hockey Supplement has been created to protect junior-aged hockey players and provide the best opportunity for their continued development. It is critical that you, the junior player, read and understand this document and what it means to you. Specific negative and high-risk behavior has been targeted to ensure that your hockey experience takes place in the safest and most competitive environment possible. As a player you must take control of your actions and respect both the rules of the game and your opponent. The Junior Hockey Supplement has been created for your safety. Controlling your actions and behavior on the ice is what defines you as a player during your development. The Junior Hockey Supplement brings accountability to coaches and players for any negative actions that may thwart the development of our players and the junior game itself. Your responsibility is to understand the consequences of these negative actions and the subsequent discipline that shall be enforced. You can develop as an athlete in this environment and benefit from the safe and fair environment that the Junior Hockey Supplement provides for all involved. We ask that you take the time to evaluate your priorities as a responsible player and read this document in its entirety. Your understanding of the Junior Hockey Supplement shall lead you to an improved hockey development experience.

Background USA Hockey and its’ junior hockey leagues are seeking solutions to ensure that the game of hockey is played at a high level of competition and serves as a development path to future opportunities in the game at both the collegiate and professional levels. To that end, USA Hockey has joined forces with junior hockey leagues at all levels within USA Hockey to establish guidelines for actions and repetitive behavior that has no part in hockey at any level, with an emphasis on the development phase which junior hockey represents. As players, you can be leaders in making this game great! The emphasis of our shared efforts in making our game better centers around the following actions – fisticuffs, checking from behind, contact to the head and dangerous hits and/or stick infractions that can lead to significant injuries. It is the position of USA Hockey and its’ junior league members that players, coaches, officials, ownership and team officials must all share in the combined efforts of improving the quality and player safety in the game while also taking responsibility for and having fair, yet clear ramifications for illegal and dangerous on-ice actions.

Objectives of the Player’s Handook The objective of the Player’s Handbook is to provide a resource that players can use to learn about and understand the regulations and potential disciplinary action contained within the Junior Hockey Supplement. The sections that follow explain to players these regulations and the consequences for dangerous and illegal actions that we all want out of the game. Have a great season and respect the game!
