Instructions The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ). With MC, cast on 42 (46) sts. Work 4 rows in stocking st. Next row: (RS). Knit, inc 2 sts evenly across. 44 (48) sts. Beg with a purl row, cont in stocking st until work from beg measures 5 (6)" [13 (15) cm], ending with a purl row. Shape top: 1st row: (RS). K2 (0). (K2tog. K4) 7 (8) times. 37 (40) sts. 2nd and alt rows: Purl. 3rd row: K2 (0). (K2tog. K3) 7 (8) times. 30 (32) sts. 5th row: K2 (0). (K2tog. K2) 7 (8) times. 23 (24) sts. 7th row: K2 (0). (K2tog. K1) 7 (8) times. 16 sts. 9th row: (K2tog) 8 times. 8 sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts. Fasten securely. Sew back seam. Large Pompom (make 1): Wind A around 4 fingers 60 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side loops. Trim to smooth round shape. Small Pompom (make 2): Wind A around 2 fingers 50 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side loops. Trim to smooth round shape.

Size 8 mm (U.S. 11) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. Scissors.
Twisted Cord: Cut 3 lengths of A 20" [51 cm] long. Taking all 3 strands tog, have someone hold one end or attach end to a hook. Twist strands to the right until they being to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves tog. Attach 1 Small Pompom to each end of Cord. Measure 2" [5 cm] from one end of Cord and attach to top of Hat at this point. Attach Large Pompom to top of Hat.
GAUGE 11 sts and 14 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking st.
