PRESS RELEASE January 17, 2017 For Immediate Release Pope names, Tab Griffin, new Head Football Coach Marietta, GA—After a two month process to search for the next head football coach for Pope High School, the administration on Tuesday morning introduced Terry “Tab” Griffin as the eighth coach in the history of the school. Coach Griffin was selected from over sixty applicants. Tab returns to Pope for the second time in his career. After a Hall of Fame career as a Greyhound on the football field, basketball court, and the track (1991-1995), he attended the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (1995-2000), where he played wide receiver for the Mocs football team. Coach Griffin then started his coaching career at his alma mater in 2001 as an assistant football, basketball, golf, and track coach. As an assistant for head coaches Steve Sparks, Butch Burden, and Bob Swank, Tab held the titles of offensive and special teams coordinator as well as interim head coach in the spring of 2008. Coach Griffin left Pope in the spring of 2008 for a new endeavor to help Coach Mitch Jordan start a brand new program at Mount Paran Christian School. At Mt. Paran, Tab was named associate head coach along with serving as the offensive coordinator for a program that went from scratch to state champions. Overall, Mt. Paran’s record is 72-30 over the past nine seasons with Cobb County’s first state football championship coming in 2014. Also, in 2014, Mt. Paran’s offense led by Coach Griffin led the state in production and the Eagles had the state player of the year from 2014-2016, all running backs. His stellar high school and college football careers and his accomplished coaching career as an assistant in many roles led to Tab being enshrined into the Pope Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2013. Coach Griffin returns to his alma mater as the leader of the football program that made strides in 2016 under former head coach and current Campbell High School coach, Kyle Adkins. A young team, that had many freshman and sophomore players, completed the 2016 campaign with a 3-7 record after going 0-10 in 2015. With a nucleus of starters returning for 2017, the end of season momentum, and the excitement of bringing back a Pope Hall of Famer, it is a very promising time for Pope High School and Pope Football. Coach Griffin will finish the girls basketball season at Mt. Paran where he serves as the head girls’ basketball coach. Following the end of the season, Coach Griffin will look to transition to Pope, where his teaching duties will be determined at that time. The Pope community welcomes back one of its best, Tab Griffin, along with his wife, Elin, and their two young girls as well as a newborn coming in February. Tab Griffin Coaching Career: Mt.
