Focus on the persecuted church: China (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region) The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (capital is Urumqi) is a 1,646,900 sq km area ringed with mountains surround the Taklamakan Desert in northwest China. There are over 21,000,000 people living in this region with over 14 people groups represented, the largest being the Uyghurs. Islalm is by far the predominant religion in the region, with Christianity representing only a small fraction of the population. Xinjiang has long been on e of China’s most troubled regions. It is the homeland of the Uyghur peoples (possibly numbering up to 11,000,000) and this people group relate more to their neighboring Kazakhstan peoples (who are Muslim) than to their fellow countrymen. In the last few years riots, insurrection, separatist rhetoric, revisionist history and harsh government crackdowns have increased. Thousands, mostly Uyghur, have lost their lives or been imprisoned amid the ruthless implementation of centralized policies and the repression of separatist sentiment. Almost all the indigenous peoples are Muslim . The highly charged political and religious atmosphere, the removal of expatriate Christian workers from most of the region and the general lack of vision by Han Chinese to evangelize these peoples mean that the vast bulk of Xinjiang’s indigenous peoples are untouched by the gospel. Reaching them will be difficult (but not impossible!), requiring perseverance, cultural sensitivity and great faith. Pray for an awakening among Christians in China and those globally to the great spiritual needs of Xinjiang’s unevangelized peoples. The government takes a hard line against Christian ministry in Xinjiang (on the pretext that it might provoke Muslim anger), and expats find it very difficult to minister at all. There was once a thriving church among the Uyghur people— Nestorian Christianity was present as early as the 6th century and peaked in the 13th century. There were also believers and some churches among the Uyghur in the 1930s, but during violent persecution the churches were destroyed and believers killed or scattered. There are now 200 to 300 Uyghur believers in Xinjiang, and another 500 in neighboring Kazakhstan. Praise God for the completion and distribution of the NT, Genesis and Exodus. Work on the OT—vital for reaching Muslims—is proceeding. The JESUS film, Christian audio recordings, gospel songs, Christian radio (TWR) and other resources now exist in the Uyghur language. Pray for the strengthening and growth of the small Uyghur house churches in Xinjiiang. gleaned from Operation World
