What is this Guide?

This guide is designed to help you administer the course. The instructor’s role is to work with participants, help them to complete the materials, and offer assistance when necessary. As the instructor, you will:    

Why SelfPaced?

Hand out materials when participants need them. Coach and answer questions on various topics. Engage students at appropriate Interaction Points to provide additional classroom instruction on the materials. Administer and record results of the Skill Checks, practice exercises, and Final Tests.

Students may ask, what is self-paced? Self-paced instruction is a method of training that allows students to move at their own pace and study the course content based upon their experience and knowledge. If a student can demonstrate knowledge of all the material presented in a course except one piece, it would be unfair and unproductive for the student to take the entire course just to learn the one piece of information they are missing. Self-paced allows a student to go through the course as quickly or as slowly as they want.

To facilitate this class you will need to secure the following materials for each participant:         

How SelfPaced Works

A copy of the Student Guide A copy of the Final Test Twelve inch scale 0-1 inch outside micrometer Decimal Equivalents Card Test kits of manufacturing materials to measure Six inch dial caliper Ball gauge set (4 gauges in each set) Final Test

Explain to the students that this self-paced course is to be taken at their own pace. The course should be completed in a reasonable period of time. As the instructor, you will need to provide the Student Guide and any equipment needed during the class. You will also provide individual coaching, as well as classroom interaction when appropriate.

Skill Checks and Tests

Skill Checks, located throughout the course, help students determine how well they are learning the material. When students complete a Skill Check, they should check their answers with the answer key located on the page following each Skill Check. When a student has completed the course material, give him or her the Final Test. The Final Test is NOT an open book test! When s/he has completed the test, grade their answers. A passing score is 80% or better. Forward the results to the appropriate office

Classroom Instructor Checklist

At the end of this Instructor’s Guide is a checklist for this class. This checklist is your tool to see where participants are in their progress. There is a column for each participant. Check off each Skill Check when a student has completed it.

Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to basic precision measurement tools. This course will provide them with a basic understanding of how these tools are used as well as how to determine when they are used.

Determining Decimals and Tolerances Using a Twelve inch scale Using a Six inch Dial Caliper Using a 0-1 inch Outside Micrometer Using Ball Gauges With Micrometers

Course Objectives

Once students understand the overall use of these tools, the students should be able to:

1. Add and subtract decimals, and determine the tolerance range of a given dimension. 2. Use the following pieces of equipment to measure objects: -

Objective Measurement

Twelve inch Scale 0-1 inch Outside Micrometer Six inch Dial Caliper Ball Gauges / Micrometers

Students will be measured on their ability to: 1. Add decimals and determine the tolerance of a given number 2. Use a scale to determine the correct length of several items. 3. Use a Dial Caliper to determine the inside, outside, and depth measurements of a large and small dowel, block, plate and bushing. 4. Use an Outside Micrometer to measure a ball bearing, dowel, plate, reamer and bushing. 5. Use a Ball Gauge / Micrometer to take a measurement of a hole. 8 hours Breaks Allow students to take breaks as necessary.

Interaction Points

Throughout the training, there may be times when you will need to provide the participants with materials or demonstrate various procedures. Please review the interaction points listed below and utilize them at the appropriate times during the class.

Interaction 1

Introduce Distribute the course materials and explain how the self-paced format will work. Explain Explain the overall purpose of this course, how the student’s understanding of precision measurement tools will be calculated at the end of the course, and explain your role as classroom instructor. Discuss Talk to the students about expectations (yours and theirs). You may want to explain the relevance of this course to their work. For example, you may want to talk about an experience on the shop floor where incorrect use of these tools may have negatively affected the work environment. Be Prepared to Interact Interact with students by quizzing them on various topics. You can use questions from the actual Skill Checks in the Student Guide, or ask questions that relate the course materials to shop work.

Stop Review the following items with students before proceeding with the class:  Evacuation plan  Emergency number  Restrooms  Phones Also, make sure all the appropriate paperwork has been completed at this time, and that everyone has the necessary materials to begin.

Interaction 2

During the course Have the tools and manufacturing materials readily available for the students. Tools and manufacturing materials are for training use only and are NOT to leave the lab area.

You may want to encourage students to ask each other questions and discuss topics with each other. A fellow student might be able to provide additional clarification on a certain topic, or explain it in a more concise manner.

Interaction 3

Review and Q/A session When the student is ready to take the Final Test, collect the Student Guide and give him or her the Final Test, along with the materials that are required. Have the student complete an evaluation form while you grade the test. If an evaluation points out course errors that need to be addressed, record them on the Course Materials Change Request Form at the end of this Guide. Include the module number, page number, reason for change and any other pertinent information. Send completed forms to your administrator.
