Prekindergarten Science Essential Learning Goals Physical Science Forces and Motion: Concepts: 1. Recognizes and describes the effect of his/her own actions on objects. 2. Displays awareness of natural forces (e.g., wind and gravity).
Structures and Properties of Matter: Concepts: 1. Examines, describes, and measures the observable features of objects. 2. Asks/answers questions about objects, organisms and events in their environment. 3. Explores and describes ways that objects can be moved in space, e.g., pushing, pulling, rising, or sinking. 4. Observes and discusses that objects are made from one or more materials. 5. Communicates that physical properties of objects and materials can change (e.g., ice melting).
Life Science Concepts: 1. Demonstrates an understanding that living things grow, change and reproduce. 2. Shows a growing ability to classify living and nonliving things. 3. Communicates about the characteristics of living things. 4. Demonstrates an understanding that animals need food in order to live and grow. 5. Observes and explains how plants and animals respond to changes in the environment and in seasons. 6. Recognizes the difference between helpful and harmful actions toward the natural environment.
Earth and Space Science Concepts: 1. Observes and discusses weather and seasons using common vocabulary (rainy, sunny, cold). 2. Demonstrates an understanding that the sun provides light and warmth.
3 Understands constellations are made up of stars. 4. Recognizes the sun is a star. 5. Can identify objects in outer space. 6. Shows and discusses awareness that different objects can be seen in the sky. 7. Describes ways that individuals are responsible for protecting our planet (e.g., recycling, mending broken things instead of throwing them away, etc.).
Engineering Design Concepts: 1. Discovers how things are constructed and work. 2. Design, build, and attest solutions through their play, e.g., as they construct sand castles and build cities out of blocks. 3. Demonstrate understanding that tools help people do things better or more easily, or do some things that could otherwise not be done at all. 1
Prekindergarten Science Essential Learning Goals
Science and Engineering Practices Concepts: 1. Demonstrates the appropriate use of various tools and other technology (e.g., magnifying glass, scales, rulers, magnets). 2. Manipulates objects to understand their properties. 3. Connects new observation to what he/she already knows. 4. Observes and explores his/her environment. 5. Identifies problems, makes predictions, thinks of ways to solve problems, and tries solutions. 6. Communicates with others about discoveries. 7. Makes comparisons and classifies. 8. Represents his or her thinking through drawing, dramatizing, graphing, or making models.
