Thursday, December 28th vs. Prince George Cougars BACK-TO-BACK: The Royals enter the second contest of a post-holiday two-game set tonight against the Cougars. Since moving to Vancouver Island, Victoria has earned a mark of 4-1-0-1 in the second game after the holiday break and have outscored their opponents 19-13 and held a mark of 23/27=85.2% on the penalty kill in those six games. The club has also shut out their opponents twice in the last three contests in the second game of the back-to-back following the Christmas break. RECORD SEEKING SOY: With his 147th career WHL assist last night, Royals’ forward Tyler Soy tied the Victoria record for most career assists, which was previously held by alumnus Jack Walker. Former Royal and Chilliwack Bruin Brandon Magee owns the franchise record as he totaled 151 helpers over 318 WHL games. Earlier this season, Soy also became the franchise’s all-time points leader when he surpassed Magee’s 264-point career. MAN-ADVANTAGE MANIAC: Last night, Royals’ forward Matthew Phillips broke the Victoria mark for most career powerplay goals with 39. The previous record was set by former Royal and Chilliwack Bruin Brandon Magee, who scored 38 through 318 career WHL games. The all-time franchise mark is held by Bruins’ alumnus Ryan Howse as he tallied a total of 47 man-advantage markers in his 262-game WHL career. NEWCOMERS: Victoria’s newly acquired forwards and former teammates on the Regina Pats Jeff de Wit and Braydon Buziak are expected to make their Royals’ debut tonight against the Cougars. Victoria acquired 1998-born Jeff de Wit from the Kootenay ICE for a sixth round pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. Victoria also traded for Braydon Buziak (1998) and a conditional pick from the Regina Pats for Jared Legien. de Wit has played in 22 games this season, split between the Pats and the ICE, and has earned six points (3g-3a) and 10 penalty minutes. Buziak meanwhile, has taken part in 32 contests with Regina and has registered seven points (2g-5a) to go with 46 minutes in penalties. ON FIRE: Several Royals’ skaters stretched their point streaks in last night’s game versus the Cougars. Tyler Soy has tallied 10 points (3g-7a) in six consecutive game, while Dante Hannoun bumped his point streak up to five contests with his seventh point (1g-6a) in his last five games. Matthew Phillips extended his streak to three games as he has registered five points (2g-3a) in those three games. ALUMNI REPORT: A trio of Royals’ alumni, which includes former Royals’ Captain Ryan Gagnon, Loan Fisher and Trent Lofthouse, are currently playing for the Calgary Dinos in U Sports, formerly known as the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Gagnon, who played in 320 career WHL games with Victoria over five seasons (2012-17), has tallied five points (2g-3a) in his rookie season with the Dinos. Fisher has registered one goal and five assists in seven contests this season. Fisher suited up in a Royals’ uniform for 283 career games with Victoria. Lofthouse, who took part in 20 career contests as a Royal, has played in one game this season for the Dinos.
