Project: Pillowcase with Rail Fence Band Materials

For one pillowcase: • 1⁄4 yard print No. 1 (band) • 3⁄ 8 yard print No. 2 (band) • 7⁄ 8 yard print No. 3 (pillowcase body) Finished pillowcase: 30×20" (fits a standard-size bed pillow) Finished block: 5" square Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics. Measurements include 1 ⁄4" seam allowances for piecing blocks and 1 ⁄ 2" seam allowances for pillowcase construction. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise specified.

Cut Fabrics

From print No. 1, cut: • 4—13⁄4×42” strips From print No. 2, cut: • 1—51⁄ 2×401⁄ 2" strip • 4—13⁄4×42" strips From print No. 3, cut: • 1—253⁄4×41" rectangle

Assemble Band

Use a 1 ⁄4" seam allowance for the following steps.

Assemble Pillowcase

Use a ½” seam allowance for the following steps, except where noted.

1. Referring to Diagram 1,

sew together two print No. 1—13⁄4×42" strips and two print No. 2—13⁄4×42" strips to make a strip set. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make a second strip set.

1. Fold print No. 3—253⁄4×41"

rectangle in half to form a 253⁄4×201 ⁄ 2" rectangle. Sew together long edges and one pair of short edges to make pillowcase body. Turn right side out and press flat.

2. Cut strip sets into a total of eight

51 ⁄ 2"-wide segments. 3. Sew together eight 51 ⁄ 2"-wide

segments in a row, alternating direction with each segment, to make a Rail Fence strip (Band Assembly Diagram). The Rail Fence strip should be 5 1 ⁄ 2×401 ⁄ 2" including seam allowances. 4. Referring to Band Assembly

Diagram, sew print No. 2 —51 ⁄ 2×401 ⁄ 2" strip to one long edge of Rain Fence strip.

2. Matching raw edges, slide
