Project: Pillowcase with Diamond Band Materials
For one pillowcase: • 1⁄ 8 yard each of 8 assorted prints (pillowcase band) • 3⁄ 8 yard background print (pillowcase band) • 7⁄ 8 yard main print (pillowcase body, band) Finished pillowcase: 30×20" (fits a standard-size bed pillow) Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width. Measurements include 1 ⁄4" seam allowances for piecing blocks and for pillowcase construction. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Cut Fabrics
From assorted prints, cut: • 32—21⁄4" squares From background print, cut: • 8—6" squares, cutting each diagonally twice in an X for 32 triangles total From main print, cut: • 1—251⁄ 2×401⁄ 2" rectangle • 1—51⁄ 2×401⁄ 2" strip
Assemble Blocks
1. Gather four assorted print 2 1 ⁄4"
squares and four background print triangles. 2. Sew together the assorted
print 2 1 ⁄4" squares in pairs (Diagram 1). Press seams in opposite directions. 3. Join pairs to make a Four-Patch
unit. Press seam in one direction. The unit should be 4" square including seam allowances. 4. Join background print triangles
background print triangles to remaining edges to make a block. Press as before Trim block to 51 ⁄ 2" square including seam allowances. 5. Repeat steps 1–4 to make eight
blocks total.
Assemble Band
1. Referring to Band Assembly
Diagram, lay out blocks in a horizontal row. Sew together the blocks in a row to make a 5 1 ⁄ 2×40 1 ⁄ 2" pieced strip. 2. Join pieced strip and main print
5 1 ⁄ 2×40 1 ⁄ 2" strip (Band Assembly Diagram). 3. Join short ends of Step 2 unit
to make a loop. Press seam open. Fold loop in half with wrong side inside; press to make pillowcase band.
Assemble Pillowcase
1. Fold the 251 ⁄ 2×401 ⁄ 2" main print
rectangle in half crosswise to form a 25 1 ⁄ 2×201 ⁄4" rectangle. Sew together long edges and a pair of short edges to make pillowcase body. Turn right side out and press flat.
2. Referring to Diagram 3, slide
pillowcase band over pillowcase body; align raw edges and pin. Sew together through all layers. 3. Press pillowcase band open,
pressing seam allowances toward pillowcase body. Topstitch through pillowcase body 1 ⁄ 8" from band seam to secure seam allowances and complete pillowcase (Diagram 4).
