Promoting ParentTeacher Conferences Pipe Creek staff visits neighborhoods promoting Friday’s conferences By Eric Stoff,
[email protected] Several Maconaquah School Corporation students received a surprise visit from Pipe Creek Elementary School teachers Tuesday and Wednesday morning while waiting for their school bus. Two groups of Pipe Creek educators ventured out into a few Maconaquah neighborhoods Tuesday and Wednesday morning to greet Maconaquah students at their bus stops. The teachers were transported in two utility vehicles driven by Principal Laura Fulton and Assistant Superintendent Dr. James Callane. The educators visited with their students, handed out juice boxes, and passed out flyers reminding students and parents of ParentTeacher Conferences, which take place Friday. The flyers read, “We want to share all the good news about your child’s progress at school!” “Sometimes parents shy away from these if they feel the news they’re going to hear is not good,” Fulton said. “So we want to tell them that we have good news to share.” Fulton said she asks her teachers to think of the conference from the parents’ perspective, and make sure they share progress in addition to any concerns they might have. “We definitely have good things to share about everybody,” she said. ParentTeacher Conferences will take place at all Maconaquah schools Friday during school hours, and all building principals stressed the importance of communication between students, parents, and educators to help the student achieve excellence. Maconaquah Elementary Principal Kelly McPike said teachers have been holding conferences all week to help boost parent attendance. “Our teachers spend the first quarter of the school year learning their students’ strengths and weaknesses, and this information is shared with parents during conferences,” McPike said. “During a time when many schools in Indiana have moved away from formal parent teacher conferences, I'm glad that Maconaquah still allows for this time in our calendar.” McPike added that teachers discuss ways parents and even older siblings can help with the development of their younger child’s reading and math skills. Maconaquah Middle School Principal Craig Jernagan said the conferences give an opportunity to build a partnership for “the betterment of our students.”
“We do a great job of communicating with parents throughout the year, but ParentTeacher Conference day is a day when we are intentional about this communication,” he said. Maconaquah High School Principal Chad Carlson said all parents are invited to attend conferences Friday, but it is “especially important for parents of students who may be struggling in a class.” “We view parents as partners in the education of their children, and we want to work with them to help them succeed,” Carlson said. “Effective communication between teachers and parents is an important factor in student achievement.”
