Prospectus: TEXtiles The Exhibition TEXtiles. An exhibit of work by Texas members of Studio Art Quilt Associates scheduled to run concurrently with the 2018 SAQA Conference at the conference venue in San Antonio.

Eligibility All Texas Region SAQA members are eligible to submit their original work.

Exhibit Concept This TEXtiles exhibition will welcome national and international attendees of the 2018 SAQA conference to Texas by showcasing Texas-themed work by Texas SAQA members. The show will be displayed initially at the conference hotel on the Riverwalk in San Antonio throughout the conference dates in April 2018. The theme is “everything Texas,” expressed in all sorts of art quilts, fiber art and textile surface design. Both twodimensional and three-dimensional art, including garments, will be considered. Texas is a rich and varied state with a unique history. Geological areas range from open prairies to dense forests to sandy beaches, lakelands, rugged hills and mountains. Her people are all shapes and sizes with ethnicities from all over the world. There are customs and festivals celebrating a wide variety of cultures. She excels in industry, agriculture, energy, sports and recreation. Whether your family has been within her borders for generations or you just moved here yourself, draw on this deep inspiration we call Texas.

The Venue The SAQA board, working with the Drury Plaza Hotel in San Antonio, has identified a lovely gallery space adjacent to conference activities. San Antonio facilitators have arranged for the show to be displayed using traditional quilt-show poles and drapes. Pedestals and mannequins will be provided for selected 3-D work and garments.

Eligibility and Requirements Please observe all submission requirements. Submissions not conforming to these parameters will not be considered. • Artist must be a SAQA member of the Texas region. Membership must be current as of January 28, 2018. Collaborative work will be considered, but all artists involved must be SAQA members. See www.saqa.com for membership information. • Artwork must fit the TEXtiles theme of the exhibit, referencing “anything Texas.” • Artwork must honor the SAQA definition of an art quilt: The art quilt is a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure. Three-dimensional work and garments with art quilt elements or influences will be eligible. • Work must be original (not created in a workshop or classroom, or under online educational guidance, etc.). Artist should confirm, to the best of his/her knowledge that the work does not violate any copyright laws. • Work should have been completed in the last three years. • Submission is online only, through the SAQA Art Call system. Juror will make decisions based on jpeg images. (See Digital Submission details below.) • Submissions must include an Artist Statement of 150 words maximum. • Selected artists will be asked to submit a hard-copy biography and artist statement for display purposes during the show. • Quilts should range in size from 24” to 54” in either direction. For details about sleeves, see Preparation for Delivery section of this prospectus. • Sculptural work must fit on a pedestal with a maximum base size of 20” x 20”. Freestanding work and garments will also be considered. • No gallery-wrapped canvases or framed quilts will be considered for this venue.

Jury Process and Acceptance • Number of pieces to be selected: approximately 45 quilts and several additional pieces of sculpture or garments. • Entries will be evaluated on overall artistic impact, design and technical skill. • Accepted work is subject to final approval after the actual work arrives. Any work that differs significantly from the digital image submitted will not be displayed.

Juror: Carole Gary Staples Carole Gary Staples, an award-winning textile and fiber artist, has been designing with fabric and fibers for more than 30 years. She holds a bachelor of arts from Seton Hill University and has also studied at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Her work has been exhibited in museums and art galleries across the United States and in venues in Europe and Asia. It has also been published in numerous books, newspapers and exhibition catalogs. She and her family reside in West Chester, Ohio.

Fee and Commission Entry fee is $30 for up to three entries. Members must pay their fees using a credit card (MC, Visa or Amex) or Paypal through the SAQA Store. Fee must be paid prior to the entry deadline listed above; the fee is not refundable. For issues with payment, please see contact information at the end of this prospectus.

SAQA Digital Submission Guidelines Images should be in focus, properly exposed, with even lighting. The art should be the only item visible in the image (other than a solid, neutral background). See Preparing Digital Images in the Member Section at www.saqa.com for more details. • A full-view image of the quilt must show all the quilt edges. • A detail image must show an important aspect of the quilt. • A third image is required for three-dimensional art, showing the back of the piece. • All images should be oriented correctly. • File format should be JPEG, at least 1800 pixels on the longest side. • Artist name(s) must not be visible in the photographs. • The digital images should be labeled as follows: last name, first name, title of the work. Use “underscore” for spaces, e.g., Doe_Jane_TexasSunset.jpg and Doe_Jane_TexasSunset_detail.jpg.

Insurance • SAQA provides insurance during the exhibit. • Artists will be responsible for insuring accepted work during delivery to and from the collection point within Texas.

Preparation for Delivery • Detailed shipping and drop-off instructions will be provided after jurying. • Large quilts must have a sleeve on the back that is at least 4” in depth. A sleeve 3” in depth is acceptable for quilts smaller than 30” in both directions. • Work must include a label on the back with the artist’s name and contact information, in addition to the title of the piece. • Artists will be responsible for the cost of shipping work to the venue and return shipping after the show. Work may be delivered and picked up in person, provided specific details are arranged.
