PVMS PTO Meeting January 9, 2013 Attendance: Ray Bernier, Danette Dykema, Sarah Minei, Emily Campbell, Amanda Wheeler, Roslyn Whitford, & Melissa Lennon 1) Review November Minutes i) Reviewed the minutes and amended the next meeting date. 2) Principal’s Report i) Board of Ed. Meeting – at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 14th. (1) Will meet in executive session to discuss significant changes at the school for safety and security (2) Plans include better control over access/entry (3) Visitors can be identified by the camera outside; visitors can show identification to the camera (4) School already has had many security features in place for years: doors secured and key pads for remote access (5) Door locks both inside and out will be enhanced ii) PAB (Preston Advisory Board) – Thursday, January 17th iii) Friday, January 18th – ½ Day for Professional Development iv) Monday, January 21st – No School v) Family Fun Night – Friday, January 25th from 6:30-8 p.m. vi) Student Council Advisor – will be a stipend position and should have a staff member in place soon to form and lead a PVMS Student Council vii) School Drop Off – parents expressed concerns of unsafe traffic patterns and student safety regarding morning drop off for students not riding the bus (1) Mr. Bernier thanked parents for bringing it to his attention and pledged to monitor the situation. (2) Parents suggested: (a) Offering a new drop off area such as using the back parking lot as a oneway loop for cars with students entering at the back door of the gym or playground with staff monitoring the entry point (b) Restricting parents from parking in the first row available so that cars could use the aisle as a one-way drop off lane parallel to the busses. 3) Old Business a) PVMS PTO’s Non-Profit Status (501c3) i) Initial paperwork to apply for the nonprofit status has been completed. Additional paperwork is required that includes: PTO’s by-laws, past activities, and past fundraisers. Once this paperwork is compiled, the application, supplement materials, and application check will be mailed. b) January Fun Night – Friday, January 25th from 6:30-8 p.m. i) In conjunction with Parks and Rec, three or four moon bounces will be rented for the night with spin art activities offered on the other side of the gym ii) Parks and Rec will supply staff to help supervise the moon bounces

PVMS PTO Meeting November 14, 2012 iii) May seek a small moon bounce for the five and under age group c) Labels for Education i) Lucia Gonsowski is chairing the project. ii) A flyer was sent home to all families encouraging participation. iii) There will be no contest associated with it this year. 4) New Business a) Field Day at Strawberry Park i) Danette will contact David to inquire about dates and pricing ii) Bussing will be free iii) Will not use the pool iv) Park will accommodate the school’s requests for special activities to be included b) February Fun Night (Family Dance Night) – Friday, February 25th i) Consider a family dance with the DJ used by Parks & Rec. c) March Fun Night (Science Night) – Friday, March 22nd i) Danette has worked on adding new exhibits this year ii) She will schedule separate planning nights for the event. iii) Volunteers are needed! iv) Sarah suggested adding a Party of Gold that evening to raise funds for the school and participants. In essence, anyone can bring in broken/unwanted gold in exchange for cash. The school and participant will profit. d) Yearbook i) The staff advisor has become a stipend position ii) Will need parent volunteers to help with the project iii) Final yearbook proof will be due April 29th to Lifetouch. iv) Fifth grade students helped last year; perhaps consider student involvement next year. v) Danette will begin the layout pages for events that happened at the end of last year after the previous cut-off date. e) Spirit Week – April 1st-5th i) Student Council will be able to plan the events for Spirit Week; a flyer will need to be sent home explaining the events planned for the week ii) The date allows two weeks to organize photos for the yearbook deadline. f) Supplies for Teachers i) In the past, teachers have been asked for a wish list of supplies they would like for their classroom ii) The school typically supplies basic “school supplies” iii) Mr. Bernier will ask teachers whether they would like this tradition to continue. g) Assembly Ideas i) Prismatic Magic – Laser Light Assemblies (prismaticmagic.com) (1) Looking at the Science Spectacular show (2) Shows run between $695 & $895 ii) Rachel’s Challenge (elementary version) – bullying/school climate

(1) Offer a session during the day for students and one in the evening for parents iii) Chris Poolis & Trick Biking – found in the past his anti-bullying message is lost in the wow factor of the stunts. iv) Black Dragons Karate School – Dan Jenkins (1) Will come and present an anti-bulling or self-confidence building program for free in exchange for permission to distribute a coupon promoting Black Dragons. v) Mobile Star Lab/Planetarium vi) Dinoman! – Science Series (www.dinoman.org) Budget i) Continuing to use last year’s budget as the PTO is not fundraising without the nonprofit status ii) Once the nonprofit status is granted, a new budget will be created Fundraising Ideas i) Fire Signs – street number signs to be posted at the road to alert emergency personnel ii) PVMS Car Magnets – 50 blue and yellow paw prints have been ordered (1) They will be sold for $5 each to support school spirit iii) O’Neil Theater (1) DigiPlex is interesting in working on a fundraising program for the future. Spirit Wear – Sarah i) Plan of having 20-25 PVMS shirts available in various sizes for purchase PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) – Mr. Bernier i) Program’s goal is to reward positive behavior ii) Year 1 – planning phase – current PVMS status iii) Year 2 – implementation phase iv) Can incorporate “Pay It Forward Project” and its focus to preform random acts of kindness by recognizing student for those deeds as “Caught Being Good” – more discussion to follow
