Quilting 101 Supply List Congratulations on entering the wonderful world of Quilting! This class is designed for the absolute beginner. It will give you the skills and instruction you need to complete a gorgeous quilt in just a few weeks. You will learn many techniques, and gain the confidence to branch into projects of your own. For our class, you will need several basic supplies. I’ve tried to pare it down to the most essential:
Sewing machine (in good working order) (You may reserve the use of a class machine.) Rotary cutter & cutting mat Thread – Mettler is best – choose a neutral or something to blend with your fabrics Pins & seam ripper Pencil & paper for note-taking 6-1/2 x 24 ruler (a more slender 24” ruler would be ok) Square ruler, 6-1/2” or 9-1/2” (other sizes of square rulers are ok, too) Book: “Start Quilting with Alex Anderson – 3rd Edition”
We are going to do a modified 9-Patch quilt, like page 24 in Alex Anderson’s book, but slightly easier and bigger. A note about fabric: At our first session we will discuss color and fabric choice. You may either choose and purchase your fabric ahead, or wait until the night of class to make your fabric purchase when we tour the store and talk about color theory and aesthetics. There are several variations in fabric choice for this design I can guide you through. You might choose to wait and purchase fabric the first night of class after we discuss some ideas. If you choose to purchase fabric ahead of time, here are your fabric amounts. Note that this is different from Alex Anderson’s quilt – hers is a small wall hanging quilt, 30” x 30”. The quilt we’re making will be about 40” x 46”. Focus fabric for 6” blocks: 1 yard Medium (dark/light) print: 1/2 yard for blocks Light:1 yard for blocks Binding (dark in picture): 1/2 yard Backing: 1-1/4 yard Small (crib) size batting (You may wait to purchase batting and backing until we’ve discussed them in class) If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call Amy Spanne,
