Poteau River The Poteau River is the seventh largest river in the state, and it is the only river in Oklahoma that flows north. The Poteau River is a tributary of the Arkansas River. It is 141 miles long and runs through Arkansas and Oklahoma. Poteau is the French word for “post,” and the Poteau River is believed to have been named by French explorers who used a post or stake to mark the mouth of the river. The river begins 2 miles south of Bee Mountain near Waldron, Oklahoma and meets the Arkansas River at Belle Point in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Towns that sit along the river include Wister, Heavener, Poteau, Panama, Spiro and Fort Coffe in Oklahoma, as well as Fort Smith, Arkansas. The Fourche Maline, Brazil and Sans Bois Creeks are all tributaries of the Poteau River. The river joins New Spiro Lake, which provides an excellent fishing habitat that is being enhanced by a Source Water Protection Plan (see next page for info). Wister Dam was built in December 1949. It sits on the Poteau River and the resulting reservoir is named Lake Wister after the nearby town of Wister, Oklahoma. Lake Wister State Park has since been built up around the reservoir. There have been several artifacts found in Oklahoma and the locals believe these runestones to be the works of Viking explorers who traveled up the Poteau River after navigating the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers, although there is not substantial evidence to support this claim. New Spiro Lake Source Water Protection Plan New Spiro Lake was constructed in 1963 and it covers approximately 250 acres with a volume of 2000 acre-feet at normal elevation. The lake provides drinking water for the town of Spiro, Oklahoma and serves a population of 2,200. New Spiro Lake has a Source Water Protection Plan that was developed with guidance from Oklahoma’s Rural Water’s Source Water Specialist and the drinking water system manager. A Watershed Advisory Committee was formed by the Mayor at the request of the Oklahoma Rural Water Association. The committee’s goal is to make recommendations and support the town of Spiro in an effort to protect the lake’s water quality. So far, the committee has achieved the installation of new fencing around the lake to prevent off-road vehicle access which causes soil erosion and sediment runoff, workshops to educate on sedimentation and erosion concerns that directly affect surface waters, installation of fish habitat in three locations within the lake by the Oklahoma Department of Fish and Wildlilfe, water monitoring within the streams leading to the lake and within the lake itself. The committee is also taking steps to get watershed education more embedded in the local schools’ curriculums. In the future, the committee plans to begin secondary water monitoring and install signage around the lake to identify it as a public water source for the town of Spiro.
