Clinic Staff Larry Czarnecki, who coaches the Red Dragon throwers, is no stranger to Cortland track and field. As interim head coach during the 1998-99 season, he led the women’s team to SUNYAC indoor and outdoor championships and was named the league’s Coach of the Year. He took over as full-time head coach of the men’s track and field team from 2000-02 and guided the squad to back-to-back SUNYAC outdoor titles, the first since 1997. Czarnecki, an Ithaca College graduate, has coached numerous All-Americans and national qualifiers, including 2001 NCAA Division III national outdoor high jump champion Mark Mirabito. He was Cortland’s assistant track and field coach from 1978-85 and served four seasons as head football coach in the 1980’s. Czarnecki returned to his alma mater in 1985, where he spent 13 seasons as an assistant football and track and field coach before returning to Cortland. Kayla Koelbel, a 2016 graduate of SUNY Cortland, joined the SUNY Cortland coaching staff in August of 2016. A pentathlete/heptathlete, Koelbel earned her undergraduate degree in exercise science, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports management. A 4-time SUNYAC conference champion, Koelbel holds the indoor SUNYAC conference championships record in the pentathlon, as well as the SUNY Cortland School record in the 60m HH. Koelbel was a frequently ranked in the top 50 in the NCAA for the pentathlon, heptathlon, and the high hurdles during her competitive career; she earned a spot to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships during the 2016 season. Koelbel currently works with the hurdles, jumps, and combined-event athletes at SUNY Cortland along with her duties in athletic administration.
