Clinic Information Philosophy:

The purpose of this clinic is to introduce high school track & field athletes and coaches to the concepts that are used in the training of university track & field athletes. The concept we stress the most is that track & field athletes have to know themselves and understand their event(s). An athlete needs to know and understand why and how certain drills and exercises are done and how they apply to what he/she is trying to accomplish.

Athletic Weight Room

Lusk Field House features a 4-lane, 200-meter indoor track, long and triple jump facilities, in-field pole vault pit, a brand-new UCS throwing cage, and bathroom facilities for both genders. UCS hurdles and blocks are available for the clinic.

Home to the Cortland swimming and diving teams, Holsten pool is located in the Park Center. A sixlane, 50-meter pool features seating for 1,500 spectators and a state-ofthe-art timing system. The 15-foot diving area, separated by a movable bulkhead, features two one-meter boards, two three-meter boards, a water agitation system, and an underwater viewing deck.

Directions and Parking:

Registration and most clinic sessions will take place in Lusk Field House, located next to Park Center on the lower part of the SUNY Cortland campus. You may park in any of the lots located by Park Center. Directions to Park Center: http://cortland.edu/directions/index.html#Athletic

Suggested Equipment:

Participants should bring active clothing (t-shirt, shorts, sweats, etc.), event shoes, equipment, and a water bottle. You are strongly encouraged to being indoor throwing implements and pole vault poles.

Each session will last for approximately 45 minutes; we will have an hour break for lunch.

Anticipated Clinicians: Steve Patrick – Coach Patrick is currently the head coach of cross country and track & field at SUNY Cortland. In his years at Cortland, he has guided the Red Dragon men to their first ever national championship in cross country. On the track, he has coached over 50 Division III All-Americans, including national champions Amaan Sideeq (100, 200 meters) and Christina Acquaviva (100 high hurdles, heptathlon), and has guided the men’s program to back-to-back NCAA Outdoor runner-up finishes. A six-time Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, in 2008 Patrick was selected as the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Patrick is a USA Track & Field Level II Coach in the sprints/hurdles/relays as well as in the jumps; he is a USA Track & Field Coaching Education instructor, and holds Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. A 1997 Graduate of SUNY Cortland, Patrick earned a BSE as well as an MS from UNC Greensboro in exercise science. A four-year competitor in cross country and track & field, Patrick competed in the 1993 NCAA Cross Country Championships Dr. Peter McGinnis – Coach McGinnis enters his 24th season working with the Cortland pole vaulting squad. In 2009, he was named the Atlantic Region Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Since his arrival in 1990, Cortland’s pole vaulters have ranked among the best in the state in Division III and have dominated SUNYAC competition. In 2009, the Red Dragon women’s pole vaulters captured the first six places at the 2009 SUNYAC Outdoor Championships and took six of the top-seven spots, including first and second place, at the 2009 indoor conference meet. The men, meanwhile, boasted the outdoor NCAA champion, the top-three finishers at the 2009 indoor conference championships and the top-two competitors at the outdoor conference meet. In 2008, the women pole vaulters earned the top-five places at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships and the top-four spots at the outdoor conference championships. McGinnis is a graduate of Swarthmore College, where he competed for three seasons on the varsity track team in the pole vault. He garnered All-America honors in 1975 at the NCAA Division III Championships and still holds the outdoor school record in the event. He has done volunteer coaching stints at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Oregon, Illinois and Northern Colorado. McGinnis is currently a member of USA Track and Field’s Sports Science Committee as a Biomechanist for the pole vault. Larry Czarnecki – Coach Czarnecki, who coaches the Red Dragon throwers, is no stranger to Cortland track and field. As interim head coach during the 1998-99 season, he led the women’s team to SUNYAC indoor and outdoor championships and was named the league’s Coach of the Year. He took over as full-time head coach of the men’s track and field team from 2000-02 and guided the squad to back-to-back SUNYAC outdoor titles, the first since 1997. Czarnecki, an Ithaca College graduate, has coached numerous All-Americans and national qualifiers, including 2001 NCAA Division III national outdoor high jump champion Mark Mirabito. He was Cortland’s assistant track and field coach from 1978-85 and served four seasons as head football coach in the 1980’s. Czarnecki returned to his alma mater in 1985, where he spent 13 seasons as an assistant football and track and field coach before returning to Cortland. He is currently the tight ends coach for the Red Dragons football team. Marques R. Dexter – Coach Dexter has helped develop one of the top horizontal jumps groups at the conference, regional and national levels. A two-time nominee for the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year, Dexter serves as an instructor for the physical education department, and an adjunct instructor in the sport management department. Dexter holds a USA Track and Field Level II certification in the jumps and in the sprints/hurdles/relays as well as being an instructor for the USA Track & Field Coaching Education program. He also serves as the recruiting coordinator for the men’s and women’s track and field teams and was a Central Region coach at the 2010 Empire State Games held in Buffalo. Prior to Cortland, Dexter was a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams at The University of Georgia.

Josh Henry – Coach Henry works primarily with Cortland's distance runners. after a successful four-year career in cross country and track and field with the Red Dragons. He Henry received a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Cortland in 2009 and earned a master's degree in sport management from the College in 2010. He earned all-region honors four times in cross country and was an All-American as a senior as he helped lead the Red Dragons to their first-ever NCAA Division III title. Henry was also a three-time track conference champion in distance events, a three-time national qualifier in the 10,000 meters and a two-time national qualifier in the 5,000 meters. A USA Track and Field (USATF) Level I certified coach, Henry serves as the director of Cortland's Summer Track and Field and Distance Running camps. He is also a certified New York State Public High School Cross Country and Track and Field official. Henry graduated from Homer High in 2005, where he was a member of the cross country and track and field teams. Veronica Montrose - Coach "Roni" was a four-year member of the Red Dragon Women's track & field team, graduating this past May with a BSED in Physical Education with a Specialization in Adapted PE. During her time at Cortland, Montrose developed into a key member of the women's sprinting program. Along with her teammates, Montrose was a three-time conference champion (4x400m relay 2010, 2012 & 4x100m relay 2010) and an ECAC Champion (4x100m relay 2011). Academics was also a strong point for Montrose, as she spent every semester here on the Dean's List. Currently, Montrose serves as an assistant coach for the program, working with sprinters and middle distance runners while pursuing her Master's in Health Education from Cortland. Phil Wiltshire - Coach Wiltshire joins the program after a successful career as a Red Dragon. A December 2011 graduate with a BSED in Physical Education, Wiltshire was a 2x All American (4x400m relay 2010 [outdoors] & 2012 [indoors]), 4x NCAA DIII qualifier, 3x SUNYAC Conference Champion (4x400m relay 2012 [indoors & outdoors] & 400IH 2011 [outdoors]), 2x ECAC Champion (4x400m relay 2011 [outdoors] & 2012 [indoors]), member of the school record-holding 4x400m relay, which also broke the SUNYAC Conference Championship meet records both at the indoor & outdoor meets in 2012. Currently, Wiltshire is serving as an assistant coach for the program, working with the men's & women's hurdlers, sprinters, and middle distance runners, while pursuing his Master's of Science in Exercise Science from Cortland.
