New regulations are changing the PAR lamp as we know it. Here’s what you need to know. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 mandates strict new efficiency standards for lighting products sold in the United States after January, 2012. Many common bulbs including incandescent, compact fluorescent and LED lamps, already meet or exceed the new standards. Others, including the once ubiquitous 100W incandescent, do not. In 2012, for example, a traditional 100W incandescent bulb rated at 1490-2600 lumens must produce the same amount of light on just 72 watts of power. Next year, 75W replacement bulbs must cut power consumption to 53W. By 2014, 60W and 40W replacements will be rated at 43W and 29W respectively, and similar savings will be phased in for different types of lamps during the same time period, including incandescent PAR lamps. The 2009 DOE lamp legislation impacted the incandescent reflector lamps listed in the chart which do not meet the requirements of the policy.
