RESTON YOUTH BASKETBALL 2016-2016 GIRLS TRAVEL COACHES Tony Washington 5th Grade Coach: Coach Washington has always had a love for and been involved in the game of basketball. From playing as a young kid, in high school, playing club basketball at JMU and serving as head manager and a student assistant coach for the men’s basketball team at JMU, basketball has been a part of his life. He also served as the Head JV and Varsity Assistant Coach for the South Lakes High School Girls’ Basketball Team from 2003-2006. Additionally, he coached in the Upward basketball league, Reston Youth Basketball on the house side, and with the Vogues AAU basketball team. He is looking forward to bringing his experiences to the travel side of Reston Youth Basketball this year and working with all of the players and coaches involved in Reston Basketball at various levels, to help make Reston Basketball a strong program for the city and for the overall South Lakes Girls’ Basketball program. He can’t wait to work with all of the girls to help them have fun learning the game, improving their skills and competing against each other and other teams, in order to get better as individuals and most importantly as a team and program! Darren Goldberg 6th Grade D1 Coach: A native New Yorker, Coach Goldberg has lived in the Fairfax County since 1997. He completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University and received a law degree from George Washington University. Coach Goldberg has coached many youth sports, including soccer, baseball and basketball in Reston Youth sports programs. This will be his third consecutive year coaching girls travel basketball for RYBL. Last year, he led the Reston 5th Grade Girls Basketball Division 1 team to a championship in the FCYBL. He also coached the Nova 94 Feet 4th Grade Girls in 2015 and 5th Grade Girls in 2016 to silver medal finishes in the Potomac Valley AAU Division 1 Regional Championship and a 12th place medal finish at the AAU Division 1 National Championships for 4th Grade Girls in 2015. Coach Goldberg’s basketball philosophy is to teach kids, in a fun way, the proper basketball fundamentals, along with concepts of team play. He expects each of his players to utilize these fundamentals and team play concepts while competing, and play as hard as they can during their time on the floor. Coach Goldberg is the founder and serves on the board of directors of NOVA 94 Feet.
Erin DeGutis 6th Grade D2 Coach: Coach DeGutis is a graduate of James Madison University and Oakton HS. She played basketball for two years at Oakton before switching over to the track program where she competed at the state level. She was an assistant coach for house basketball during high school and worked as a referee in college. This is her second year coaching travel basketball for Reston. Last year she led the 5th Grade Reston D2 team to a runner-up trophy in the end of season tournament.
Peter Barr 7th Grade Coach: Coach Barr is a graduate of The College of William and Mary and a native of Norfolk, Va. He played competitive basketball most of his life until he redirected his passion for the sport into coaching his two daughters. He has been coaching girls youth basketball for 10 years at both the house and travel league levels. This will be his 3rd year coaching for RYBL girls travel, and he looks forward to building on the great success his team achieved during the 2015-16 FCYBL season by finishing 3rd in Divison 2. Coach Barr’s oldest daughter is now a varsity player at South Lakes High School and he is looking forward to training future Seahawks in the Reston Youth Basketball Travel Program!
Andy Cole 8th Grade Coach: Coach Cole is a seasoned basketball coach who is returning to coaching this season after several years in retirement. He has served as Girls Travel Commissioner for RYBL and coached 7th and 8th grade girls travel teams to multiple championships. Coach Cole also was the Freshman Girls Coach and Summer League Varsity and JV Coach at South Lakes High School. In AAU, he coached; 11 and Under (fourth place region), 13 and Under regional, 13 National three times (Junior National Champs, Sweet 16 Nationals), 14 National twice (Junior National Champs), 15 National twice (Junior National Champ runner up; Elite 8 Nationals), 16 National Asst. Coach (Sweet Sixteen and Final four Nationals). Coach Cole is looking forward to working with our 8th grade team this season and to preparing them to play in high school!
