Revelation Series Study Sheet Week 6—May 27 Message Title: Doing Time in Laodicea Text: Revelation 3:1-22
Read Revelation 3:1-22 Which of these three churches (Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea) most reflects where you are at in your faith right now? Why? Jesus rebukes the Christians at Laodicea for having a faith that is “lukewarm” (v15). What does this mean? Do you feel that your faith in Jesus is lukewarm some times? All the time? Be honest! How does our walk with Jesus become lukewarm? How did it happen for you? Jesus’ response to the lukewarm Laodiceans is to discipline them (v19) with a harsh rebuke. Read Proverbs 31:11-12. What is the purpose of God’s discipline in our lives? Does it change the way you see God’s discipline to know that he does it because he loves you? What can God’s discipline look like practically in your life? Share an example from your own experience if you’re brave enough. Read Rev 3:17:-19. These verses describe some steps in responding to God’s discipline: 1. Recognise our condition (v17). Do any of the harsh adjectives in this verse describe you? How does that make you feel? 2. Receive God’s forgiveness, grace and mercy. What do the images of gold and white clothes represent? -
How can you avoid the temptation of drifting into despair and depression over your failures, and instead receive God’s purifying grace?
3. Renew your perspective (v18). What does God’s discipline help us to see that we might otherwise miss? 4. Repent—change direction (v19). What practical steps will you take to renew your faith and commitment to Christ? What steps can we take to avoid our faith becoming lethargic and lukewarm in the future?
