The property The original Ridley Hall was built in 1567, however, the building was later destroyed by fire and rebuilt in a more contemporary style in the 1700s. The stable wing to the west is dated to 1743, while the main block was created by Horatio Adamson for Francis Bowes-Lyon in 1891 and represents a fine example of the neo-Tudor-style architecture, with its arched entrance and large, octagonal battlemented tower at the south-west corner. The hall is currently the boarding wing for Haydon Bridge High School. Despite this, it retains many of its historic fittings and architectural splendour, including stone-mullioned-and-transomed windows, parquet flooring, wall panelling and intricate plasterwork. Perhaps the most notable features are the impressive carved fireplace in the dining room which originated from Mottisfont priory in Hampshire, the stone fireplace in the main hall which dates back to 1639 and the various Bowes-Lyon heraldic crests. The main entrance has an exceptional reception hall with an ornate carved staircase, gallery and coffered ceiling. Ridley Hall boasts a number of first-class reception rooms which are beautifully proportioned, providing significant spaces for entertaining. Those which are currently used as the common room, the library, the Pink Room and dining room all have elegant full-height bay windows, period panelling and elaborate plasterwork to their ceilings. The service areas are situated away from the formal rooms and include a fully equipped catering kitchen, an office, cloakrooms, a laundry, store rooms complete with a walk-in butcher’s fridge, a plant room and extensive cellars, one of which is fitted with a secure strong room.

The U-shaped wing located beyond the service areas is home to an airconditioned former media suite and breakout space with kitchen facilities. There are 25 bedrooms arranged over the first and second floors with lift access if required. The rooms immediately above the principal reception rooms are the largest and open off the first-floor galleried landing. The bedrooms are served by nine bathrooms, one of which has disabled facilities. There are seven separate WCs spread over the two floors. The first floor also has a kitchen facility. Garden & Grounds Ridley Hall sits within about 24 acres of formal and informal pleasure grounds consisting of lawned gardens, well-established mature woodland and parkland. Originally created in the 1800s by the Bowes-Lyon family, the gardens are extensive and provide a wonderful backdrop to the property. The estate has previously had a putting green, a tennis court and a small golf course, as well as a five-a-side and football pitch. A private drive leads from the main gate past the delightful lodge house and on to the hall. There is parking to the front of the main block. The drive splits to provide further areas round to the south and the Media Wing. In all, approximately 24 acres (9.71 ha)

Other properties In addition to the main residence, there are two further dwellings for sale. These include a lodge house at the main gate and Lyon Cottage. Garden Cottage belongs to the vendors but it is excluded from the sale. The Lodge A one-bedroomed, stone-built gate house currently used as the estate office. Lyon Cottage A three-bedroomed bungalow offering open-plan living and requiring modernisation. Location Ridley Hall borders the Allen Banks Nature Reserve which is owned by the National Trust. The area is rich in wildlife and is surrounded by mature woodland mainly comprised of native oak and beech. Hadrian’s Wall, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the county, is close by, as are the impressive remains of two Roman forts, Vindolanda and Housesteads. The Northumberland National Park is within easy striking distance. This designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Dark Sky Discovery Site is the most northerly national park in England covering 400 square miles and encompassing Hadrian’s Wall, Keilder Forest, as well as the Cheviot Hills.

Despite its rural situation, this enviable location is ideally situated for an easy commute to a number of market towns, as well as Newcastle city centre and Carlisle. Hexham is the closest for shopping and is at the heart of the Tyne Valley, just a few miles south of Hadrian’s Wall. This charming market town has much to offer including cobbled streets and a medieval abbey, eclectic independent shops, awardwinning restaurants and a thriving arts scene.
