Robert William Fischer, Jr.

Robert William Fischer, Jr. Bob was born on November 5, 1948 in Minneapolis, MN. He grew up in Edina, MN, and he graduated from The Blake School in 1966. Always proud of his Minnesota upbringing, he headed west to attend college in California. He graduated from Occidental College in 1970 and he married his college sweetheart, Mary Morris, on June 18, 1971. In 1973, Bob graduated from UCLA School of Law. He practiced law for over forty years in Los Angeles, CA. He had a steadfast belief in justice in the legal system. Bob was selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America, which, as he would say, might mean something to some people. From his first trial, he relished the challenges of complex commercial litigation. He also enjoyed the opportunity to mentor younger attorneys. He began with Adams, Duque and Hazeltine. He helped found the L.A. office of Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer and Wood. In 2014, he retired as head of the litigation practice in the L.A. office of Norton Rose Fulbright. Bob believed strongly in equal opportunity for all. He gave legal advice to and served on the board of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee, a non-profit, community-based, social services organization dedicated to improving life in South Central Los Angeles. Bob once wrote that his “greatest pride” was that he married the woman, Mary, with whom he raised his sons, Robert III and John, who married his daughters-inlaw, Kerri Strug and Carey Schaeffer, with whom they raised their own children. Robert is an attorney in Tucson, AZ, and he and Kerri have two children, Tyler (4) and Alayna (2). John is a real estate investment professional in Redondo Beach, CA, and he and Carey have two sons, Charlie (3) and Danny (1). In preparing a biography for his 50th high school reunion in October 2016, Bob wrote, “Mary and I are coming to believe that being a grandparent is the whole meaning of life.” Outside of his family, Bob’s greatest passion was golf. Bob described himself as a “terrible, but avid” golfer. He was a proud member of The Los Angeles Country Club. He enjoyed early morning, weekend rounds with his sons and his friends in “The Dawn Patrol.” In addition to playing golf, Bob worked as a golf rules official for junior, high school, college, amateur, and senior tournaments. He volunteered at the Junior Amateur and Senior Open Championships for the United States Golf Association, the NCAA Division II National Championship, the Pac-12 Conference Championship, and numerous tournaments for the Southern California Golf Association. At LACC, Bob served as the chair of the Junior Golf, Rules, and Handicap Committees and as a member of the Green and 2017 Walker Cup Host Committees. In 2010, Bob joined the board of the SCGA, and he later served as the chair of its Hall of Fame and Rules & Competitions Committees. He worked to provide more opportunities in golf for youth, women, and people of all backgrounds. In late December 2016, Bob and Mary travelled to Maui, Hawaii to celebrate the holidays and more than forty-five year of marriage. At the end of that vacation, Bob was injured in a fall. Throughout his recovery, he was looking forward to returning to all of the things he loved in his life, particularly his family, his friends, and golf. Unexpectedly, he suffered cardiac arrest and he later passed away in the presence of loved ones on February 12, 2017, in Torrance, CA. A youthful spirit, Bob will be remembered for his enduring love for his family, his exceptional intellect and judgment, his honesty and integrity, his enjoyment of a good laugh with friends, and his appreciation for the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.
