Topic: Victorians/Mountains and Rivers

Date: Autumn 2 2016

Year group: 5 and 6

Year 5: Children will continue their exploration of the Victorian era this half term. They will be investigating various aspects of Victorian life including the rich, poor, food, travel, homes, transport as well as key inventors and inventions. Work with our chosen author Berlie Doherty and her book “Street Child” will also be continued. Additionally, pupils will encounter Victorian poets such as Edward Lear and will learn about “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Year 6: This half term children will be immersed in the topic of “Mountains and Rivers”. We will be exploring the major mountain ranges across the world, investigate how they are formed and research the achievements of famous climbers such as Hilary and Mallory. We will also welcome special guest “Nigel Vardy”, an English mountaineer and motivational speaker. Our chosen author continues to be C.S. Lewis, the children continue their journey through the magical land of “Narnia”. Towards the end of term we will be busy rehearsing for our production “Robin Hood”.

Ways you can help your child 1. Please continue to encourage your child to complete their homework tasks. 2. Encourage your child to talk about what they have been learning at school. 3. Encourage your child to read their reading books and information books relating to our topics. 4. Remember that the library at the “Revive Centre” is a free community resource that could support your child with homework tasks and help with the development of research skills.

Helping your child in English      

Please continue to support your child with regular reading sessions. Encourage them to talk about what they have just read and ask a few questions too, using some of the questions attached to support this. Your child will receive two sets of spellings a week. They will be tested on Tuesdays and Fridays. One way to learn spellings is the LOOK, COVER, SAY, WRITE and CHECK method. Please encourage your child to learn and practise spelling lists sent home weekly. Encourage them to put them into sentences, look for them in newspapers or in their reading books. Try to find other words that have the same or similar meaning.

Maths In years 5 and 6 we continue to work on the times tables. They form the building blocks of many methods we use to solve problems. Please encourage your child to learn their times tables. Help your child to tell the time. Ask at different times of the day: What time is it? How long is it until…? We are also working very hard on mental arithmetic. This includes the four operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It is crucial that the children can use the correct method to solve a variety of these types of questions.

Geography Year 5: Pupils will use maps to plot the growth of the British Empire during the Victorian times. They will then undertake a case study of one or more Commonwealth countries before, during and after Victorian times. Aspects such as population change, trade, economy, cultural development and environmental issues will be examined. Year 6: This half term pupils will be finding out about Mountains and Rivers. This will involve answering questions such as “How are mountains formed and in what ways do their shapes and features change?”, “How is the path of a river determined and “How does it’s features change as it progresses?”. We are also privileged to be having a visit from Nigel Vardy. He is a local mountain climber, explorer, author and motivational speaker, who will work with the children and share his extraordinary experiences.

Other Please can all pupils bring their P.E. Kit in on a Monday and take it home on a Friday to be washed. All pupils are expected to have their kit in school every day, to ensure opportunities to be involved in sports are maximised.

It is important your child understands what they have read and can talk about it to support progress in school. Below are some questions to ask when hearing your child read. 

Read newspaper, comics books, internet as often as you can

Take your reading book home

What do you think happens in the book

How did the characters feel and act?

How does the author use smart words to affect you?

Can you identify and record some of these examples?

How did your prediction of the story compare to what you read?

If it is a Non -Fiction text can you write down 5 things you found out? Your children use these prompts when reading or writing. Ask your child about them and hear how they are used in school. In Science we are focussing on: Interdependence and Adaptation

Times tables 1-12 Knowing timetables helps children with all of their number work. You can encourage your child to sing, chant or say each of their tables. Even if your child is unsure of the Tables they will remember the number bonds and find answering calculations much easier. We work on multiplication at school to help with learning in maths. The more practice your child gets, the better at mental maths they will become.
