Specifications & Quality • Communication from both parties is critical -understand what’s expected! -standards / tolerances?

• Purchasing & Quality & Engineering – working together! • No Surprises • Read & understand ALL specifications • Many times - not enough info when RFQ is received

Supplier Auditing • Consistent process is critical

• ISO? Even better … is the foundry doing what they said they would? • Financials of the casting supplier – need to know the details!

• What continues to be important? -quality -capabilities -financial stability

• Failures?

• Relationships are important

-appearance

• Yes … ISO or TS “preferred”

-document control

• Captive foundry same as outside source?

-conflict materials -how problems are responded to

Globalization & Reshoring • Key element still is cost! – part of doing business

• Other key elements? • Offering cost reductions is appreciated/expected • Meeting OEMs goals – whatever they might be

• Investment in their company …. Automation (for example) • Globalization • If you have staff around the world = globalization is easier • Medium size company – typically no such resources. Then reshoring makes sense!

• What ever helps to drive costs down • Incentivize behavior of the supply base

Lead Times • Lead times tend to be the casting suppliers “comfort level” • Need help to reduce • Standard reply of “six weeks” just won’t work

• Better forecasts from OEMs – then “pushing more” could be accepted • Customer – wants shorter • Foundry – better forecasts

Shorter lead times could come with better forecasts …

• Metalcasters should be a key resource • Knowing your internal costs is always key! • Ultimately … early collaboration – very critical
