MEMORANDUM June 5, 2014 To:
Board of Education
RE:
Monthly Report
Below is an update pertaining to some of the issues I have been addressing since the last Board meeting. School Calendar The 2014-2015 District Calendar was adopted by the Board at the May meeting and is in the process of being approved by the Department of Education and Early Development. Once approved by EED, the calendar will be mailed to all teachers along with a schedule for the upcoming school year.
Legislation The Governor has signed the capital budget that included three of our five legislative project requests totaling just over $100,000. The Wood Chip Storage Pole Barn, Log Loading Trailer and Emergency School Generator will be funded this year. The Heat Loop and Residential Learning Center were not funded for a second straight year. The funds will be available to the District after the beginning of the new fiscal year on July 1st. In anticipation of the approved funding, we have begun ordering supplies and equipment for the first two appropriations so these projects can be completed by the end of September. Wood Chip Storage Pole Barn (Yes) $40,000 Log Loading Trailer (Yes) $52,375 Emergency School Generator (Yes) $8,500 Greenhouse and Processing Center Items that have been completed since the last report have a strike thru within this paragraph and include the water line, water tank, irrigation system, second dirt purchase, construction of remaining beds, mixing area, artic entryway, owls, fence realigned, mulch bin, and additional support post. The processing center still needs a sink, counter, walls painted with a certified product, floor plan, door on mechanics room and floor coated and etched. Since writing this report, some of these tasks without a strike thru have already been completed. The District also has a temporary staff member “E DUCATING A LL S TUDENTS T O R EACH T HEIR F ULL P OTENTIAL A S R ESPONSIBLE C ITIZENS .” Alaska REACH Academy

Certified Vacancies The remaining District certified vacancies were reposted in early May. As of this report, all certified vacancies have been filled. Below are the current certified recommended hires: • Principal/Teacher at Dot Lake - Robert Litwack • Itinerate Physical Education Teacher - Cody Malloy Numerous interviews were conducted for the Itinerate Physical Education Teacher and Dot Lake Principal/Teacher position vacancies over a two-day period in late May. These two positions have been offered and were recently accepted for the FY15 school year.
working in the greenhouse 20 hours per week. A job description posting for the permanent position is included within the Board packet. If approved, this part-time position will be posted in mid June. Regional School Board Training On Tuesday, May 10th, at 1:00 PM, AASB Board Training will be available at no cost to the District for all interested Board members. All Board members have been contacted thru email and/or a telephone call to access interest in attending the workshop. As of this report six of the seven Board members will be in attendance along with district staff members. The AASB Training will concluded at 4:00 PM and includes such topics as duties, responsibilities, goals and self-reflection. Student Representative Gathering data from various districts to be presented at the Board meeting. The two most used options to select a student representative include: to have students submit letters of interest to the Board; select students to interview with the Board; and then the Board votes on the student representative for the year or hold a district-wide high school election in conjunction with student council elections. Alaska Summer Leadership Institute This year the Alaska Leadership Institute was held on May 28th thru May 30th for the 16 districts included within the RAPPS grant. The institute was a “what’s required now” type learning experience since the focus of the conference stressed quality instruction, assessment, evaluation models and leadership issues mandated thru the State. The district planning session also provided our team the time to reevaluate program plans and new ideas for future projects to research and/or implement such as curriculum, evaluation documents, young authors, extracurricular activities, schedules, distance delivery methods and textbooks/electronic media that meet the new standards. iRobot Researching an idea to bring core academic classes to the smaller rural sites that do not have highly qualified teachers within one or more subject areas at the high school level and eventually the middle school level. This technology would also be utilized during inservices when sites are not able to travel to Tok during the winter months as well as create the option of participating in PLC meetings with other sites. I will discuss this idea at the Board meeting for direction. If you have any questions, concerns and/or additions to the agenda, contact me at your earliest convenience.
