Nike, Inc. Restricted Substances List & Sustainable Chemistry Guidance Update Summary for: RSL - January 18, 2017 CHEMICAL LIMIT CHANGES Apparel and Footwear International RSL Management (AFIRM) Group, an apparel and footwear industry body focused on chemistry, released the AFIRM RSL in December 2015. Nike is one of six founding members of AFIRM, and the group has worked for more than a decade to improve the management of hazardous and restricted substances in the global supply chain. (Visit www.afirm-group.com for more information.) AFIRM’s aim in creating an industry-wide RSL is to provide an aligned approach to managing restricted substances across the global supply chain. Based on the collaborative effort of more than 20 brands, the AFIRM RSL reduces the large number of complicated and sometimes contradictory brand RSLs while simplifying the approach and accelerating efforts to reduce chemical hazards. As of January 18th, 2017, Nike has aligned our RSL with the chemical limits and testing methods listed in the AFIRM RSL. Note that the implementation guidance and testing requirements are not affected by aligning with AFIRM, those remain substantially the same with minor updates for 2017. Changes in chemicals and/or limits are highlighted in the table below. Please refer to the full RSL document for complete information (http://www.nikeincchemistry.com/restricted-substance-list/). MODIFICATION TO THE AFIRM RSL LIMITS Nike’s practice has been to phase out of specific chemicals using a step-down approach. We continue this approach for three classes of chemicals in the 2017 RSL update, which is a modification of the AFIRM RSL. In each of these cases, the limits defined as “PASS” are aligned with the AFIRM RSL, with an additional “Warning Range” to alert suppliers to follow up and act upon detections above these levels. These chemicals are: Acetophenone & 2-Phenyl-2-Propanol (page 9) APEOs (page 9) Dioctyltin (page 20) NIKE-SPECIFIC RESTRICTIONS A separate list of Nike-specific chemical and material restrictions follows the Nike RSL on pages 25 and 26.
OTHER CHANGES TO THE NIKE RSL Several other sections within the RSL have been updated and should be reviewed closely including: - Inks/paints and screen printing sample preparation guidance - Leather Sourcing policy - Material Testing Matrix (changes outlined at the end of this document) - Validation of a Greening Effort form - Updated guidance on testing embedded electronics SUMMARY OF CHANGES RSL Section
