Piecing the Blocks
Note: Use a 1/4” seam allowance for all stitching. Press seams in direction of arrows. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (288) background 2½” x 2½” squares. Using 8 matching 2½” x 6½” rectangles of print fabric and (16) 2 ½” x 2 ½” background squares make 8 matching pieced units by stitching on the drawn line then trimming ¼” away from the stitching. Press the seams toward the background. Repeat to make 18 sets of units in matching groups 8.
Make 18 matching sets of 8.
Using the remaining 2½” x 6½” rectangles and the units completed in the last step, make the following sub-units in matching sets of 4. Make a total of 72 units in matching sets of 4.
Piecing the Blocks (Continued) Select 2 coordinating sets of units to make 1 block. Sew a background 6 ½” x 6 ½’ square between 2 matching units to make a row. Press the seams away from the background square.
Sew 1 remaining matching unit between 2 coordinating units to make a row.
Press the seams toward the center unit. Make a second row.
Sew the rows together to make an 18 ½” x 18 ½” block. Press the seams away from the center. Make 9 blocks.
Assembling the Rows Refer to the cover picture for block placement. Sew the blocks into rows with a 2½” x 18½”sashing strip on each end and between the blocks. Press the seams toward the sashing strips. Make 3 rows.
Completing the quilt Sew (4) 2½” x 2½” blue cornerstones and (3) 2½” x 18½”sashing strips together as shown. Press the seams toward the sashing strips. Make (4) sashing units.
Sew a sashing unit to the bottom of each row. Sew the rows together. Sew a sashing unit to the top. Press the seams toward the sashing units.
Borders Sew the (7) 6 ½” x WOF outer border strips end to end. Cut (2) 6 ½” x 62 ½” strips and sew to the sides of the quilt. Press the seams toward the border strips. Cut (2) 6 ½” x 74 ½” strips and sew to the sides of the quilt. Press the seams toward the border strips. From backing fabric cut (2) 82” x WOF. Sew together with a lengthwise seam. Press the seam open. Layer and quilt. Use the (8) 2 ¼” x WOF blue binding strips to bind the completed quilt.
