Rustic yet modern: Furnishings elevate woodworking to art By DANETTE M. WATT David Stine can fashion a tabletop from a 60-inch-diameter cross-section of sycamore or craft an elegant four-poster pencil post bed. Is he an artist or a woodworker? He acknowledges both labels come with baggage. "I've struggled with that question for a long
time," he said. "Everything (I create) has to be functional and have utility. I can build something that is pretty, but it has to be userfriendly." David, 40, creates custom-designed furniture from large pieces of wood, hewing and planing each slab to bring out its natural beauty until they are pieces of art in themselves. One tabletop he made was from a piece of walnut 50 inches across. A table can

cost between $5,000 and $25,000, depending on its size and the type of wood. A self-taught craftsman, David grew up on a dairy farm in Jersey County. His interest in furniture began early when he watched his grandfather disassemble furniture so it could be refinished and reassembled, often using only hand tools. His interest in working with large pieces of wood began when he visited a King Tut exhibition and was impressed by the immense objects in the collection. In 1995, while a law student at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., David founded Stine Woodworking and discovered his niche building furniture by hand. WORKSHOP FROM PREVIOUS PAGE became his passion and life's work. After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, David and his wife, Stephanie Abbajay, moved with their two children, Oskar and Willa, to a 40-acre farm in Dow. "We fell in love with the farm the first time we saw it in the summer of 2001," Stephanie said. "It's a beautiful location, and it had a really big footprint, which is what David needed to expand his business." David built a kiln and sawmill on his property and harvests trees from the mixed hardwood forests that have been in his family for four generations. The man who founded Dow built the house in 1871. "Our interest was more historical," Stephanie said. "Jerry McIntyre (of McIntyre Construction) helped us come up with a game plan." With the exception of a few pieces of furniture, David crafted all the wood furniture, flooring and cabinetry in the home. The dining room originally had six or seven doors leading from it, including to the kitchen and a bathroom. The couple enjoys entertaining, so the room was opened to the kitchen and its walls were reconfigured, with a breakfast nook and mudroom added. "The kitchen took six months to do, but it's the showpiece of the house," she said. "It's my favorite room, and I can look out the window and see my farm."
