SHS Update: December 8, 2017 With finals quickly approaching and students diligently reviewing this next week to finish the semester strong, remember why our teachers work so hard challenging each student to reach his or her potential. It is because they care about each student’s future and failure is not an acceptable result. “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.” Shout Outs A shout out goes to the hard work of all FFA members who worked hard this week delivering fruit and meat. I know I and the community appreciate fresh fruit and meat. A shout out goes to the JH Student council for collecting food for local families in need. It is amazing the amount of food our students has been able to collect in such a short amount of time. As I journey through the school I have seen many students helping other students who have been struggling in classes. This is a testament to the character of many of our students who unselfishly sacrifice their free time to help each other. Thank you goes to all of the community support we have received with our extracurricular activities. I know sometimes we fail to express of thanks enough. These activities would be not be as successful if it was not for the unselfish help of many of our community members. You are very much appreciated. Progress Grade Check The next progress grade check will be Tuesday, December 12. The end of the Quarter is December 19th. 8th Grade Recognition

The boy players and their parents will be honored after warmups of the A boys game. November Students of the Month The Students of the Month for November have been recognized for their abilities to show Caring. We would like to congratulate the following students: Ali King, Leah Hinkle, Katie Thomas, Trevor Lambert, Gwen Wilkey, and Garrett Hinkle for the example they have set for their fellow classmates. Daily Bulletin and Weekly Update Information These weekly updates can now be found on the website under the “High School” tab. The main office will also be posting the school daily bulletins in the “Live Feed” section of the website. This is in an effort to increase the quality of communication between the school and all of our school family. Cell Phone Communication In an effort to limit the amount of distractions our students are experiencing on a daily basis, the school district would like to remind parents that if you need to contact your child during the school day please call the office at 660-388-6442 and we will pass the message on to your child. Online Bullying Form On the school website under the “For Student” and “For Parents” tabs you will find a Bullying Report Form. This form contains the school bullying policy, a current definition of bullying and two options for submitting a complaint. The first option is an online form that will go directly to the administrator responsible for handling the issue. The second option is a printable form that can be mailed to the school. It is unfortunate that we need such forms in our school but we are committed to handling all bullying incidents in a timely fashion. Canned Food Drive All 1st hour classes are collecting canned food items to donate to our local food pantry. Any and all donations before this holiday season is much appreciated. Attendance/Tardy Policy It is a proven fact that the better a student’s attendance to better a student’s grades. So I am providing a brief reminder about the current school attendance and tardy policies as the end of first semester approaches. Attendance-An excess of 8 absences per semester per class can result in a reduction of 1/3 of a letter grade for each absence thereafter. Out of School Suspension days will not be counted against a student’s 8 absence limit. Extenuating circumstances and imposition of penalties may be appealed to the Attendance Committee by requesting such action through the principal’s office. Tardy- Unexcused tardiness is an unexcused appearance of a student after the starting time of a class. Teachers detaining students to their next class must provide an excuse to get them into class without penalty. All unexcused tardies for each quarter will be recorded. Tardies

are counted by individual class. Students will only receive disciplinary action after they have received 3 or more tardies in one class. At the start of each new quarter, students start over with zero tardies for each class. Motivation of Students We are starting to have the Christmas Break syndrome setting in. All help making sure that your students remain motivated through next week are greatly appreciated. We are starting to have some disciplinary issues regarding in class motivation. Finals Schedule Finals will be given the 18th and 19th of December.
