Saratoga County Fair– We Need Your Help! 4-H can be seen everywhere at the Saratoga County Fair. Whether in a building or in the show ring it is a unique opportunity for you to share 4-H with the fair going public and also be recognized for all your accomplishments. These locations are very special to 4-H and should be a great backdrop for members, leaders, projects, animals and more.

The 4-H Building at the Fair is a hub for all 4-H activities, events and displays. It houses all the static exhibits, is the location for hands on activities, presentations, club action booths and displays and is where all show logistics are. The 4-H Building, both inside and out, must be a perfect first impression of 4-H.

June 2014
June is National Dairy Month June is Dairy Month when traditionally we give thanks to the many farm families engaged in the production of milk. Milk plays a vital role in the nutritional needs of our nation; from the milk we drink to the ice cream we eat and enjoy. As Americans, we enjoy the benefits of our food supply of a bountiful dairy industry effort. Today we have fewer families engaged the in production of dairy farming, but they continue to provide America with these essential products.
Continue to celebrate the accomplishments of our nation’s dairy industry. This can be done by having three a day servings of dairy products. If you know a dairy farmer or their family, thank them for their hard work and dedication.

Your Rabbits, Cavies, and Poultry at the Fair
Code of Show Ring Ethics
Help from exhibitors would be appreciated to set up cages in the Rabbit/Cavy area of the tent on July 19th starting at 9:00 am. 4-H exhibitors are also needed for set up in the Poultry area of the tent, and we will do those cages starting at 11:00 am the same day.
Have you ever read the Saratoga County Agricultural Society Code of Show Ring Ethics? If you are right now asking yourself “ What is that?” perhaps this would be the time to review this important document. The Code of Show Ring Ethics is a list of 11 guidelines directing how exhibitors of animals will conduct themselves during fairs or livestock shows. Each is summarized and explained here. (Refer to the code in the fair book as you read each of the following items).
Exhibitors will be responsible for all cage cleaning, feeding, watering, and tent clean-up during the week. A sign up sheet will be in the tent for rabbit/cavy and for poultry. When you sign up for a shift it means that you will be doing all cages. Note that exhibitors who bring water bottles are responsible for maintaining the water in them. Exhibitors wishing to feed their own animals or birds must put a sign on the cage indicating this. Daily Tent Crew shifts are:
8:00 am to completion, for cleaning, feeding and watering Water and Tent Check at 1:00 pm Water and Tent Check at 5:00 pm Water and Tent Check at 9:00 pm
Water and Tent checks include making sure that all animals and birds have water, keeping the tent attractive and clean, and raking the aisles if necessary. All exhibitors must work at least 2 hours during the week and take at least one first shift slot. Failure to participate may result in loss of fair premiums.
Poultry Pullorum Testing and Rabbit Tattooing
Attention Animal Exhibitors
All poultry exhibited at the County Fair, with the exception of doves, pigeons, and waterfowl, must be accompanied by the results of a negative pullorum-typhoid test conducted within 90 days prior to exhibition. Alternatively, the owner may show proof that the birds originated directly from a US pullorum-typhoid clean flock. Flock testing must have been done within one year of the fair. Exhibitors who need to have birds individually tested may bring them to the 4-H Building on the Fairgrounds from 1:30 to 4:30 pm on June 27th. A technician from the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets will be on hand to conduct the tests. The department can be contacted directly by exhibitors who wish to have a flock test done. At the same time as the pullorium testing clinic, There will be rabbit tattooing. Call the office by June 23rd to let us know if you will be bringing a rabbit.
Just a reminder that cattle, goats, swine, sheep, horses, ferrets, dogs and cats are to be immunized in sufficient time prior to fair. A certificate of rabies vaccination signed by an accredited veterinarian must be attached to their entry, which is due July 7th.
1) You must be able to provide proof of ownership, length of ownership, and ages of animals entered. Note that special rules apply in 4-H for leased animals, and Identification Certificates for horse, goat, sheep, and cattle are available at the 4-H Office. 2) You must be able to provide the required health certificates for your animals. Your fair book outlines all of the requirements. 3) Exhibitors are expected to care for and groom their animals while at the fair or livestock show. This fits in perfectly with the 4-H principle of “learning by doing”. 4) This guideline deals with appropriate drug usage in livestock depending on the end use of the animal after the event. Consult with your veterinarian. 5) Surgical procedures or use of drugs which could effect the animal’s performance or natural contours or conformation, excepting surgical procedures performed by a licensed veterinarian to protect the health of the animal, are prohibited. A prime example of this would be injecting a horse with a drug to calm them down for a show or demonstration. This action would be in direct violation of this code. 6) The use of practices or devices, such as striking animals to cause swelling, using electrical contrivances, or similar practices, is not acceptable. 7) Direct criticism or interference with a judge or show officials is prohibited. Parents take note: though you may disagree with the way that your child was placed in a class, you can’t go stomping into the ring and confront the judge! Judges are people, too, and we hire them to give their opinion. The process of judging will never please everyone. 8) No one shall conspire with another person to violate the Code of Show Ring Ethics. 9) Owners, exhibitors, fitters, trainer, or participants assume responsibility for an animal’s condition regardless of whether they were instrumental in or had knowledge of treatment of the animal that contravenes the Code of Ethics.
10) The act of entering an animal gives consent to the fair or livestock show to have disciplinary action against the responsible individuals published in any publication of the IAFE including “Fairs and Expositions” and in any special notices to members.
Advanced Entries Due July 7! Mark the date in your calendar! All animal entries, Young Farmer Olympics, group action booths and club exhibits must be pre-entered on an advance entry form by Friday, June 28th. Late entry forms will not be accepted.
6
11) The act of entering an animal is verification by responsible individuals that they have read and understand the Code of Show Ring Ethics, including the consequences and penalties provided for actions prohibited by the Code. It is further consent that rule infractions that also violate federal, state, or local law may be referred to the proper authorities. As you can see this is an important item, and violations are a serious matter. All exhibitors and their parents are encouraged to read the entire document. It appears in both the 4-H and Open Class exhibitor’s handbooks. If you have questions or would like to discuss any portion of the Code of Show Ring Ethics, please contact the 4-H office. 7
