It will be necessary to provide your own bedding for your stall(s) at the County Fair. This year, we are asking horse exhibitors to stay and enjoy the new barns through Sunday night. As always, it is the responsibility of each exhibitor to thoroughly clean out the stall(s) before leaving after the show. This is a great opportunity to display good exhibitor ship and leave it better than you found it. Each 4-H member will pay a $10.00 stall deposit per horse, payable when you turn in your entries to the Saratoga County Fair Grounds Office. This deposit will be refunded after inspection of your assigned stall. Your stall should be completely cleaned out before inspection.

County Fair Animal Health Considerations Showing animals at the County Fair presents a risk for disease transmission. Proper precautions taken before, during and after the fair can help to decrease an animal’s exposure to infectious disease, and help to protect your animals at home as well. Before the fair, make sure that animals have all required vaccinations, complete any tests required for your particular species, and be sure that you have all of the necessary documentation. Try to minimize stress on the animals and offer the same feeds that you will be taking to the fair. Transport your animals to the fair in clean trailers and avoid the use of commercial trailers. During the fair, be sure that your animals always have fresh water available and continue the same feeds that were being used at home. Provide plenty of clean bedding as required for each species. As much as possible, do not allow nose to nose contact with animals from other farms, do not share equipment, and use only buckets and tubs from your own farm. For milking animals it is best to use your own milker claw in common milking parlors. If you bring your own milking unit, do not allow others to use it. After the fair isolate show animals from the main herd for 3-4 weeks upon return. Use separate tools and feed equipment while caring for returning animals, and modify the work routine so that they are taken care of last, potentially stopping the spread of contaminants to other animals. Monitor the animals for signs of disease such as fever, diarrhea, skin abnormalities, heel warts, mastitis, or abortions, while minimizing stress as much as possible. If the home herd or flock is up to date on all vaccinations, it will lessen the chance of a disease outbreak due to infection carried home by show animals. Do not make the mistake of exposing your entire herd or flock to the threat of disease brought home from the County Fair. The fair lasts for six days, but the ramifications of a disease outbreak could last much longer and perhaps cost many dollars to rectify.
Saratoga County Shines at District and State Presentations We would like to congratulate Emma Baker, Abigail Beaulac, Katielynn Evans, Kohlby Himelrick, Olivia Hogan and Julia Haight, Jarrett Kuehner, Nathaniel Lanfear, Emily Rosenberger, Grace Rosenberger, Peter Schwartz, and Sarah Rosenberger for representing Saratoga County at the District Presentations event in Voohersville. This is the first time Saratoga County has sent youth in quite some time, and these 13 youth did an outstanding job representing our program.
Grace and Emily Rosenberger, and Peter Schwartz were selected to represent our region at the State Public Presentation event held at Cornell University. Peter was the only one who made the trek to Ithaca and the trip was well worth it! He received a gold sticker for his presentation on “Golf 101” and he also received the gold medallion for the best presentation in the demonstration category. Great job Peter! Congratulations to you all for your hard work, the 4-H office is very proud!

NY State Fair The NY State Fair will be held Thursday, August 25th through Monday, September 5th this year. Saratoga County will travel to Syracuse on Sunday, August 28th and will participate from Monday, August 29th until Thursday September 1st. During the fair, there are many opportunities for 4-H members to participate. From showing an animal, to participating in a contest, to helping with a hands-on activity, to assisting judges. Each experience will be a chance to apply leadership skills, show the public what 4-H is all about, and have fun.
On June 11, 2016 we held a very soggy day at the Scholarship Golf Classic! 79 golfers participated in this year’s event! The 4-H office would like to send a special thanks to our golf committee: Dick and Elaine Lane, Joan Rowland, and Carol Bayer, Laura Macey and Mackenzie Macey Your commitment to 4-H in Saratoga County, is second to none! We’d also like to thank the many sponsors, donors, players, and 4-H volunteers. Without your help this event would not have succeeded. Plans are already underway for next year’s tournament. We are always looking for new volunteers to join our committee. Please look for upcoming planning meetings in future additions of Highlights.

Saratoga County 4-H Shooting Sports needs your help at the Fair! In a few short weeks the 175th Saratoga County Fair will begin (July 19th through the 24th). 4-H Shooting Sports runs three venues at the fair – an archery range, a Laser shot range, and a pellet rifle range. These three venues provide a majority of the funding for all shooting sports programs in the county – the 10 week shooting sports courses, Archery, Natural History, Small-bore rifle, Air-pistol, Shotgun and Muzzleloader. We also support the outdoor cooking & chuck wagon in the conservation area of the fairgrounds. The ranges are supervised by qualified 4-H Shooting Sports Instructors but need other volunteers to help them run. Can you spare a few hours to help in one of the three booths? We need help with everything from taking money, line management, promoting the venues, and working the archery and pellet rifle lines (for the older clubbers). This is a great way for the family to volunteer together. Volunteer 4-H’ers (and one parent) will receive free admission for the day they volunteer. For more information or to sign up, please go to: http://tinyurl.com/ShootingSports4HFair
