SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON PREVIEW Combine their success with their experience, and you have a 2010 University of Evansville soccer team that is built around veteran players who know how to win. Four consecutive winning seasons have proven that the Purple Aces are among the best in the Missouri Valley Conference and the Midwest Region. Now it’s time to look ahead to 2010 with one of the most experienced teams in Aces’ history. “Having a veteran nucleus returning certainly raises expectations,” says fifth year Head Coach Mike Jacobs. The experience begins with three seniors who have been key players since they were freshmen. Fifth-year senior forward Tom Irvin earned All-Midwest Region honors and was UE’s leading scorer in 2009 with six goals and eight assists. Midfielder Robby Lynch was first team All-MVC, All-Midwest Region and UE’s male athlete of the year. Academic All-American Mike Luttrull is 27th in career scoring with 47 points. Combine that talented trio with veteran goalkeeper Phil Boerger, back four starters Justin Sass, Jarrett Robbins, Blake Schneider and Aaron Henkle, along with forwards Tad Kreamalmeyer, Tyler Kincaid, Gavin Chura, Jesse Sharp and a talented group of newcomers, and the result is a team capable of playing well into November this year. Sass joined Lynch and Irvin on the All-Midwest Region unit after leading a defense that allowed only 25 goals, the second fewest since 1991. Those three players plus Luttrull and Boerger earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors last fall, when Evansville reached the MVC Tournament finals. “When you have nine starters coming back,” Jacobs says, “the expectation is that we have a team that knows how to compete and be successful against the best teams in the nation.”

COACHING STAFF Head Coach Mike Jacobs

In just four years as head coach, Mike Jacobs has made University of Evansville Soccer one of UE’s premier athletic programs. He has led the Aces to four consecutive winning seasons, the longest such streak at UE since the early '90s, and to the finals of the 2009 State Farm MVC Tournament. Jacobs took over the UE program in 2006, and in his first year the Aces produced the nation’s most improved record at 9-8-0. That wasn’t all. UE in 2006 posted its best nonconference record (7-3-0) since 1996, and the Purple Aces' fifth place finish in the highly regarded Missouri Valley Conference was their highest since 1999.

In 2007, playing a more difficult schedule, the Aces won 10 games for the first time since 1999. They climbed two more places in the MVC standings, finishing third behind two teams that eventually reached the NCAA Sweet 16. UE also reached the MVC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1999. And, two years after averaging less than one goal per game, the 2007 Aces finished sixth nationally in scoring with 45

COACHING STAFF

goals. Then in 2008, playing seven teams that were nationally ranked, Jacobs led the Aces to another winning season despite having a squad comprised primarily of freshmen and sophomores. Mike Luttrull and Robby Lynch were chosen for the All-Midwest Region Team, and nine players earned all-MVC honors. As a result, Jacobs in 2008 was awarded with a contract extension through the 2012 season. The 2008 team rose as high as #21 in the nation by Soccer Times, an amazing feat considering the program won two games in 2005, the year prior to Jacobs and his staff arriving on campus. Jacobs’ 2009 squad, in addition to posting UE’s fourth straight winning season, reaching the MVC Tournament finals and narrowly missing the NCAA Tournament, also produced a record-tying four players on the All-Midwest Region Team. In addition, juniors Robby Lynch and Mike Luttrull earned national scholastic honors in 2009. Each of Jacobs’ last three teams has earned the NSCAA/adidas Team Academic Award. The 2009 team was recognized by each of the major national polls, earning votes in the Soccer Times and NSCAA polls, and being ranked nationally by Top Drawer Soccer. 2009 also marked the second straight season that the Aces ranked among the nation's top 50 in attendance.

Jacobs' coaching career began shortly after he graduated from Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y. in 1993. Jacobs served as Head Coach at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. from 1996-99, and was the 1997 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after taking a team that finished 1-17-1 in 1996 and leading the Gaels to a 12-6 record in ‘97. At age 24, he was the youngest Division I head coach in the country. Jacobs then joined the UE program for the first time in 2000, hired by legendary coach Fred Schmalz as the

COACHING STAFF

Aces' top assistant. After two years at UE, Jacobs from 2002 through 2005 served as the top assistant at Duke University, where he helped lead coach John Rennie’s Blue Devils to three NCAA Tournaments, including the 2004 College Cup semifinals. The 2005 Blue Devils won the ACC Championship. Jacobs was named inaugural winner of the NSCAA National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2004. He was listed by College Soccer News as one of the ‘Top Assistant Coaches in the Country’ four years in a row, then returned to UE as Head Coach in 2006.

Jacobs’ professional coaching experience includes assisting with the Long Island Rough Riders, where he worked with former Tampa Bay Mutiny and New York/New Jersey head coach Alfonso Mondelo. He also assisted with the North Jersey Imperials of the USISL, where he coached current US Under-23 National Team assistant coach Tim Mulqueen. Jacobs has served on the US Soccer and USL Super Y-League national coaching staffs, and has developed a reputation for identifying and developing professional players. The group includes Stefani Miglioranzi of the Philadelphia Union; Cory Elenio of the Carolina Railhawks, Alec Dufty of AC St. Louis; Michael Videira and Darrius Barnes of the New England Revolution; Ray Burse and Spencer Wadsworth, formerly of FC Dallas; Blake Camp, formerly of the New York Red Bulls; Jordan Cila, formerly of the Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids; current UE assistant Chris Loftus, formerly of the Swedish first division; Kyle Helton, formerly of the New England Revolution; Mike Grella of Leeds United of English Coca-Cola Championship, and Brad Guzan of Aston Villa FC of the English Premier League and US National Team. Jacobs holds a USSF ‘A’ license and an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. His role with the NSCAA continues to grow, as he was named to its Board of Directors in 2009.

Jacobs has written for numerous NSCAA publications, has co-authored a chapter in the Soccer Coaches Bible along with Coach Rennie, and currently writes a column on soccer for the Sunday Evansville Courier & Press. Jacobs also started a number of programs to help connect Aces Soccer with its supporters. ‘Kick The Cold, Give A Coat’ provides coats for those less fortunate during the

COACHING STAFF holiday season. The ProRehab ‘Score with the Aces’ reading program encourages young students to read with their parents. ‘Kick for Nick’ is a cooperative effort between Aces Soccer and the Lambda Chi fraternity to collect used soccer balls to send to children in Iraq. UE’s ‘Kick For The Cure’ began in 2008 as a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation. Team members have also participated in Habitat For Humanity, Circle K Special Ed Prom, the MLK Walk, and Riley Walkathon. In addition, the Aces Soccer Camp is one of the largest soccer camps in the country, serving youth players from all over the United States. Mike and his wife, Jennifer, have four children: Katherine, Daniel, Allison and Amanda.

What Others Are Saying About Coach Jacobs

“Being able to work with Mike at a young age and having him teach me what it takes to be a professional is something that has helped me get to where I am today. He was able to show me what it takes both mentally and physically to make it at the next level.” Brad Guzan, Alton Villa (English Premier League) & US National Team “Mike’s character and work ethic make him a special person and coach. He is a great asset not only to college soccer but the game in general.” Mike Sorber, U.S. National Team Asst. Coach

“Coach Jacobs has done a fantastic job of coaching and recruiting. Wherever he has been, from Iona to Duke to Evansville, Mike has left his mark on each program. He is innovative and dynamic!” Dr. David Masur, Head Coach, St. John's University, 1996 National Champions

“Mike is a dedicated coach who works hard, stays current with the game and is an effective

recruiter. His teams reflect his commitment to soccer.” Sigi Schmid, Head Coach, Seattle Sounders FC

“Mike is energetic, passionate, knowledgeable, and loves to coach. He works extremely hard at everything he does and will settle for nothing less than a job very well done.” John Rennie, Former Head Coach, Duke University, 1986 National Champions

"Mike helped me achieve my soccer goal, playing in MLS. He is now someone I look up to as I begin my college coaching career." Dan Popik, Assistant Coach, North Carolina State University "Mike Jacobs is a very engaging person. His enthusiasm and passion are infectious. His work rate is second to none. He is known as a player's coach. There is no doubt that he will bring Evansville soccer back to national prominence." Sasho Cirovski, Head Coach, U. of Maryland

COACHING STAFF Associate Head Coach Marshall Ray

Now in his fifth year as Mike Jacobs' top assistant, and second year as associate head coach, Marshall Ray is a major reason why the Aces have produced four straight winning seasons. “Marshall has been intricately involved with our success, and continues to be an influence in our locker room," says Jacobs. "Having a former player who is passionate about representing the University of Evansville is a tremendous example for our players. There is no question that Marshall bleeds purple.” A 2000 graduate of UE, Ray was a member of the 1996 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship team that reached the NCAA Tournament. He played defender and forward, and was an MVC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week during his career. Ray received UE's Ian Coull Award in 1999 for competitive spirit and teamwork, and was on the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete all-region team. After playing professionally for the A-League Nashville Metros in 2001, Ray spent four years at Drury University.

After two years as Drury’s assistant coach, he became the youngest Division I head coach in the country in 2003 at age 25. Both of his teams at Drury received the NSCAA Team Academic Award. Ray had just completed his playing career at UE when Jacobs joined the Evansville staff as assistant coach in 2000. Jacobs left for Duke University as an assistant coach in 2002, and brought Ray to the Duke program after the 2004 season. Ray spent the 2005 season involved with recruiting, player development and day-to-day operations for the Blue Devils, who won the ACC Tournament and were nationally ranked that year. Ray also directed the Duke Soccer Camps. When Jacobs returned to UE from Duke as UE’s head coach in 2006, he made Ray his first choice for assistant coach. Ray holds a USSF A license and studied under Pierre Barrieu, U.S. National Fitness Coach, to obtain a USSF National Fitness Level I license. He holds an NSCAA Advanced National License. Ray serves as Midwest Regional Chair for the NSCAA/Performance Subaru Division I All-America Committee, and as a coach led FC Evansville to IYSA state championships in 2009 and 2010. Marshall and his wife, Julia, were married on May 30 of this year.

COACHING STAFF Assistant Coach Chris Loftus

Head coach Mike Jacobs was convinced almost a decade ago that Chris Loftus would make an outstanding coach when his playing days ended. Now, Jacobs has given Loftus his first coaching assignment, as an assistant on the UE staff. Loftus joined the Aces early in 2010, and was part of the coaching staff during the spring season. A team captain at Duke University in 2005 and 2006 who went on to play professionally for the MLS New England Revolution, and Limhamn Bunkeflo in Sweden, Loftus will assist in all facets of the program at UE. Jacobs was an assistant coach at Duke from 2002 through 2005. "I had the opportunity to recruit and coach Chris

at Duke University, and he was an outstanding player and leader on some very good teams," according to Jacobs. "He is someone I had always hoped to work with again, and it's great to see that become a reality." A native of Springfield, Ill., Loftus helped lead Duke to the 2004 College Cup. He was also a team captain on the Blue Devils' ACC championship teams in 2005 and 2006. Loftus was an all-ACC midfielder, and earned the Duke Blue Award for leadership. He graduated a semester early, in December of 2006, with a degree in psychology while also completing his pre-med requirements. Loftus played for the Revolution in 2007, and for Limhamn Bukeflo in 2008 and 2009. "What Coach Jacobs has done for the soccer culture here is very exciting," Loftus says. "The program has the potential to make some noise around the country, and I'm looking forward to getting started and being part of the UE program.”

Assistant Coach Steve McCullough

Steve McCullough begins his second year as director of operations for the University of Evansville soccer program in 2010. McCullough served as goalkeepers coach at UE in 1996 and 1997, and from 2002 through 2005. Among the players he coached was Troy Perkins, who went directly from the University of Evansville in 2003 to the MLS, where he quickly became an All-Star. Perkins also played in Europe before returning to his former MLS team, DC United, this year. "Steve has a wealth of experience as a player

and coach," according to head coach Mike Jacobs. "It is a huge plus to be able to have him on our staff." The Evansville native and graduate of Evansville Reitz High School was an All-Great Lakes Region goalkeeper, team captain, and Most Valuable Player at Marquette University in the mid-90s before returning to Evansville. He has been active in coaching at the club level, in addition to his collegiate coaching experience. McCullough has coached the Evansville Soccer Club 97 boys for the past five years, and was the 2007 Indiana Youth Coach of the Year. He holds an NSCAA National License, NSCAA Goalkeeper Level 1 and 2, and USSF D License. Steve and his wife, Tamala, have three children: Caden, Kennedy and Jaxson.
