Season Outlook The 2014-15 Temple men's basketball season saw the Owls knock off a Top 10 team in Kansas, defeat defending NCAA champion UConn twice, win 26 total games and advance to the semifinals of the NIT. The only thing that was missing -- a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The first team left out by the NCAA selection committee last year, Temple will look to make sure that does not happen in 2015-16. The Owls, under 10th-year head coach Fran Dunphy, return three starters and nine letterwinners from a team that posted the best turnaround (+17 wins) from the previous season. "Our goal, as it is every year, is to be the best team that we can possibly be," said Dunphy, who notched his 500th career victory last season. "I feel good about our team. They have worked hard in the off-season, and are committed to that goal." Leading the way will be a trio of returning senior starters in 6-8 power forward Jaylen Bond, 6-5 guard Quenton DeCosey and 6-11 center Devontae Watson. Bond was arguably the missing ingredient that helped the Owls move from nine wins in 2013-14 to 26 wins last year. The University of Texas transfer was a force inside defensively, helping the Cherry and White limit opponents to nearly 17 fewer points per game. The Philadelphia native also grabbed an American Athletic Conference

leading 7.9 rebounds per contest while chipping in 7.6 points per game. A two-year starter, DeCosey provides offense to the squad and is the team's leading returning scorer (12.3 ppg.). The Union, N.J. native has great perimeter range, as evidenced by his 51 three-pointers, and possesses the ability to get to the basket. Just 13 points shy of 1,000 for his career, DeCosey also sees the floor well and is the team's top returning assist man (81). One of only three Owls to play in all 37 games last year, Watson has had an increased role on the team each season. The lengthy post player averaged 2.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest while blocking 37 shots. Junior Josh Brown is the heir apparent to replace departed first team all-conference selection and leading scorer Will Cummings (14.8 ppg., 151 assists) at the point. The 6-3 guard has made four starts over his first two seasons and appears ready to take on the challenge of running the Temple attack. A lockdown defensive player, Brown averaged 6.3 points as a sophomore while dishing 57 assists and making 29 steals. His last second shot at Memphis provided Temple win a signature conference road win. The other starting slot will be heavily contested among the four returning veterans, redshirt junior forward Daniel Dingle, senior Devin Coleman, sophomore Obi Enechionyia and junior Mark Williams. 2015-16 temple men’s basketball Dingle, who returned to the lineup last season after suffering a knee injury during the 2013-14 campaign, gives the Owls size and athleticism at the small forward slot. The 6-7 Bronx native made 12 starts last season, averaging 3.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. The lone freshman on last season's squad, Enechionyia shined bright, especially towards the end of the year. The 6-8 forward averaged 5.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game with his best outing being a 17-point, 8-rebound, 5-block display in the NIT semifinal loss to Miami. A transfer from Clemson, Coleman joined the team after game 10 and went on to average 3.6 points and 2.3 rebounds while playing in the remaining 27 games, all off the bench. A solid, hardnosed player, he tallied double figures three times with a season-high 14 points at UCF. A 6-8 forward, Williams has made 20 starts over his two years with the Cherry and White, including the first nine games last season. A tough inside player who averaged 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds, the Cleveland, Ohio native exploded for a career-high 24 points in a win over Penn.

Four newcomers, Ernest Aflakpui, Levan Shawn Alston, Jr., Trey Lowe and Ayan Nunez de Carvalho, as well as junior walk-on Mike Robbins, will also vie for playing time on a deep Temple roster. A 6-10 center from Accra Ghana, Aflakpui missed most of his senior season at nearby Archbishop Carroll (Pa.) High due to a knee injury. The athletic big man should provide Dunphy with interior defense and strength on the boards. Alston, whose father Levan ('96) starred at Temple in the mid-90s, was a First Team All-State selection at The Haverford School. The highly-rated 6-3 prospect has the ability to play both guard positions. Another First Team All-State pick, Lowe is a big guard (6-6), who was a prolific scorer in high school where he tallied 2,492 points in his career at Ewing High. A late signee, the 6-5 Nunez de Carvalho is the third Argentine guard to make his way to the Temple campus over the past 20 years. He has already played against high-level competition as a member of the 2014 FIBA U17 Argentina team that competed at the World University Games. Robbins, now in his second year on the team, is a local product out of Lower Merion High, where he helped lead his team to the state title game in 2012. The Owls will again play a tough schedule, opening against a projected Top 5 team in North Carolina, and traveling to NCAA Finalist Wisconsin. The other non-conference clashes of note include a trip to the Puerto Rico Tip-Off that features Minnesota, Butler, Miami, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri State, Texas Tech and Utah. The Owls will also host Villanova and St. Joe's while playing La Salle and Penn at the Palestra.
