Saturday, November 25th vs. Seattle Thunderbirds ONE POINT FROM HISTORY: Royals’ forward Tyler Soy is one point from tying the all-time franchise record for most career points. The record is currently held by former Royal and Chilliwack Bruin Brandon Magee who totalled 264 points (113g-151a) over 318 WHL games. MAKING HIS MARK: With two markers last night, Igor Martynov moved into second among all rookies in the WHL for most goals with nine. The product of Krasnoye, Belarus trails only Kristian Reichel of the Red Deer Rebels who has tallied 11 times this year. Martynov is also fifth in the WHL rookie scoring race as he has earned 16 points (9g-6a) in 25 games. POWERPLAY PICASSO: Last night Victoria Royals’ Captain Matthew Phillips tied alumnus Brandon Magee’s Royals’ record for the most career powerplay goals with 38. The franchise mark is held by former Chilliwack Bruin Ryan Howse who tallied 47 over the course of his WHL career. Phillips sits tied for second in the Western Conference in man-advantage markers with seven. FIRST OF MANY: Victoria’s Remy Aquilon played in his first career WHL game last night versus the Seattle Thunderbirds. The 6-0, 160 lb blueliner was recently called up from the Okanagan Rockets of the British Columbia Major Midget League (BCMML), where he has recorded eight assists through 16 contests. The Kelowna, BC native was added to the Royals’ 50-man protected list earlier this year and signed to a contract during the team’s training camp in August. MIDDLE MAGIC: With a goal in the second period last night, the Royals have now scored 47 times in the middle frame this season. Victoria has recorded more goals in the second period than in both the first (30) and third (37) stanzas. The club also recorded nine shots in the middle frame last night to bring their season total to 268, more than the first (246) and third (204) periods. HABS PROPERTY: The Montreal Canadiens have two defensive prospects in the Royals’ Scott Walford and the Thunderbirds’ Jarret Tyszka. Walford was a third round selection, 68th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft while Tyszka was selected two rounds later in Round 5, 149th overall. ALUMNI REPORT: Former Victoria Royal Jamie Crooks is currently playing in his fifth season for the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the U Sports Hockey League. Crooks has played in 13 games for the Golden Bears this year where he has tallied 11 points (8g-3a). The native of Vermillion, BC took part in 141 contests for Victoria and earned 120 points (70g-50a) from 2011 to 2013.
