MEASURING UP: AM I DOCTRINALLY SOUND? Ephesians 4:1-7, 12-16 January 8, 2016 We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love. Ephesians 4:14-16 1.

We Must Desire Spiritual Maturity Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-3

2.

We Must Develop Our Spiritual Maturity All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doc trine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction and righteousness. II Timothy 3:16 NKJV

3.

We Must Demonstrate Our Spiritual Maturity Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to His word; instead put it into practice." James 1:21, TEV

Whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything." James 1:2-4 NLT

WEDNESDAY MEAL AND PROGRAMMING Join us on Wednesday evenings beginning again after the first of the year for our Recharge fellowship dinners! Dinner is served from 5:306:15pm. Donations help cover the cost of the meal. Kids eat free with parents. We would love to have your help preparing, serving and cleaning up from meals. If you or your group are able to help on a Wednesday night, please contact Brian @[email protected]. We will have a Wednesday evening fellowship meal this coming Wednesday. The meal for this week will be a baked potato bar and salad bar.

Southern Hills’ worship services may be heard on 630 WLAP-AM radio and on WLAP.COM every Sunday at 8:30 a.m., brought to you by Al Torstrick Insurance and the Bank of the Bluegrass.

A Warm Welcome Welcome to Southern Hills United Methodist Church! We are so glad that you have chosen to worship with us today. Before you leave, please take a few minutes to stop by our Welcome Center located just outside the worship center in the Narthex. Our volunteers will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have or additional information you desire about the church. Births The red rose on the altar is in honor of Grayson Daniel Kenady, son of Dan and Laura Kenady, born December 22, 2016 in Cincinnati, OH. The rose symbolizes that a Gift to Missions will be given by Southern Hills United Methodist Women, with the prayer that this child grow in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and be a blessing to the home, church and community in which he/she lives. Proud grandparents are Mary Kenady, Dan and Lynn Kenady of Lexington, and Larry and Phyllis Harwood of South Carolina. Welcome This morning we welcome Sid and Sharon Campbell to our congregation. They are joining at the 11:00 a.m. service in the sanctuary.

Second Campus Preview & Prayer Gathering The walls are up, the paint is being rolled on, and soon the carpet will be laid at our new campus location. On Sunday, January 15th at 3:00 pm, all are invited to preview this work-inprogress, and join in prayer for those we will be inviting and bringing to, not just our new location, but to our traditional worship services, as well. You are invited to come with the names in mind of specific people for whom you will pray, and then write those names on the floor of the new sanctuary and education area prior to the carpet installation. Our new campus is located in the Keithshire Place Shopping Center at 3330 Partner Place, Suite 130 (next to Brooklyn Pizza). Mark your calendar to come Preview & Pray!

On-going Prayer Concerns, Pam Bradley, Paul Evensen, Sandy Fink, Jo Carol Kovack, Kathryn McDonie, Joan Reed, Ralph Rhodus, Phyllis Woolery.

MEXICO TEAM MEETING If you are interested in joining the Tijuana, Mexico Mission Team this summer, June 12-17, join us for the beginning of our team building and learning sessions. We’ll learn about the culture, the ministry, and the people we will be interacting with, as well as learn effective ways to work as a team while serving. The meeting will take place in the Reception Room at church on Thursday, January 12 from 7:008:00pm. Remember the first payment of $150 (to go toward airfare) will be due at this time. Contact Brian Shumard (859-684-5626) with any questions.

We still need volunteers for referees, scoreboard and concessions. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Brian Cathey at [email protected], or call the church at 277-6176. The Upward program gives Southern Hills the opportunity to open our doors to the community not only to be involved in a sports program, but even more importantly to share the gospel of Christ! We need you! You can volunteer for one week, the whole season, or simply for a couple of hours. Join us! METHODIST MEN MEETING Monday, January 9, 2017 The Methodist Men will hold their regular meeting on Monday, January 09, 2017 in the Courtyard Room. FAITH, HOPE & LOVE IN ACTION HAPPY NEW YEAR! Ladies, are you looking for something new to get involved in this year? You might want to check out United Methodist Women. United Methodist Women is a global community of women—nearly 800,000 strong. This is an organization where women grow spiritually, develop as leaders, and serve and work to create a world in which all women, children, and youth thrive. United Methodist Women members nurture one another in community and support U.S. and international projects for improving lives of women, children, and youth with their prayers, volunteer efforts, and financial gifts. There are 180 ladies in the Southern Hills Organization United Methodist Women. The Organization is open to any woman who indicates a desire to belong and to participate in the global mission of the church. Five circles of women meet once a month at various times and days of the week to promote the work of United Methodist Women. A Lenten Quiet Meal is held during Lent. In May and December we have a potluck dinner for all women of the church. We invite and welcome all women to be a part of the fellowship of Southern Hills United Methodist Women. For information about United Methodist Women and our five circles, please contact Virginia Liptrap at 223-1737.

If you would like to place flowers on the altar in honor or memory of a loved one, please contact Dawn Sparks at 277-6176., or email her at [email protected]. Our 2017 calendar has many available dates for a special remembrance.

We are starting TODAY, January 8! Our sessions will be held once a month on Sundays after the 11:00 a.m. service. After service, at noon, we will share a meal in the activities room (by the gym). This will give us a good time to build relationships. At 12:30pm the teaching session will begin. It will be an interactive time with a lot of discussion and activities that will foster a deeper understanding of the Christian faith. We will end at 2:30pm. Contact Brian Shumard, Samantha Poore, or the church office if your student plans on attending. It is open to any student from 6th-12th grade that has not previously participated.
