Appendix 1 Glossary client The person who commissions the designer context The situation in which the design activity is set creative education Forms of education that develop young people’s capacities for original ideas and action (NACCCE) creative thinking Thinking that leads to new insights, novel approaches, fresh perspectives, new ways of understanding and conceiving ideas creativity Imaginative activity fashioned so as to produce outcomes that are both original and of value (NACCCE) critical thinking Purposeful thinking that results in interpretation, analysis and evaluation. It is an essential tool of enquiry design brief A concise statement of the task, agreed between the client and the designer, which sets out the task and gives the context in which possibilities are to be explored design criteria The performance characteristics, required by the client commissioning the product, against which the product will be evaluated design proposal A feasibility study which reveals one or more possible solutions to the design brief and which recognises existing constraints and meets the design criteria design specification A detailed statement, derived from the design proposal, which specifies the purpose and performance characteristics of the product agreed between the client and the designer designer The person or company designing the product manufacturer The person or company making the product manufacturing specification Specific detail regarding every aspect of material, shape, form and construction which the designer communicates to the manufacturer

modelling Trying out ideas in ways that are quicker, cheaper or more convenient than making the real thing (e.g. talking, drawing, using kits, materials, ICT), small sample recipe technical information Data relating to dimensions, material properties, constructional details and manufacturing processes user The person who will use the product that is designed and manufactured
