Roll Out the Red Carpet for Jack Frost We may want to desperately hold on to every last ray of summer sunshine but let’s face it, winter is coming. It’s time to pack away the barbecue and get out those casserole dishes. A few quick and easy preparations can set you up for a comfortable and cosy winter so let’s take a look at some cool tips for winter well-being. Sort it out! If you have a slow cooker hiding in your cupboard, now is the time to dust it off and set it up. Stocking up on canned food is a good idea. Tomatoes, beans, and soups all make good bases for stews and casseroles. Slow cooking doesn’t need expensive meats. Instead buy cheap cuts and freeze them. Rearrange that spice rack with winter flavours like cumin and cinnamon. Start on those supplements. We all know once the mercury drops, flu and cold cases rise. Having a strong immune system will help you fight off winter nasties. Start taking supplements now to prepare. Increasing your intake of zinc, a mineral found in foods like seafood, spinach and pumpkin seeds, is a great way to give your immunity an extra boost.

Winter-ready your house. A few simple preventative measures can help protect your home from harsh winter elements. A properly maintained house can also cut down on heating costs. Check for gaps around windows and doors, cracks in the walls and broken or loose roofing. It’s also a good time to trim back any trees close to power lines that might come down in a storm. When all the preparations are done, sit down to a hot cuppa in front of a cozy, warm the fire. And if Jack Frost

Why Open Homes? Are They Necessary? It’s a common question. It’s your home so it is perfectly reasonable to have privacy and security concerns. Before I discuss the marketing strategy behind open homes, let me reassure you: there are thousands of

open homes all around New Zealand every weekend and it is extremely rare to hear of problems arising as a result. Open home visitors are welcomed on arrival and must exit through the same door they came in. If you have items of particular concern e.g. artwork or antiques, place these in storage prior to your home going on the market. It is of course simple common sense to remove jewellery, keys and other valuables. Now, the strategy. To achieve the best price, we need to attract as many buyers as possible to encourage competition. As well as the highly motivated, active buyers, open homes attract passive buyers i.e. neighbours or people not serious about buying but who, on impulse,

stop by and may fall in love with what turns out to be their dream home, the perfect investment or ideal accommodation for a family member.

Passive buyers only have one home in mind—yours. They will compete ardently and often stretch price boundaries higher than active buyers (who may have a backup option) in order to achieve their dream.

Median $

Digital and print media does not attract passive buyers. Open homes do.

Multiple interested parties at an open home also fuels momentum. FOMO (the fear of missing out) motivates people to act quickly.

What people are saying about Joe…

Just for a Laugh

A noted biologist studying little green frogs in a swamp was stumped. The frog population, despite efforts at predator control, was declining at an alarming rate. A chemist at a nearby college came up with a solution. The frogs, due to a chemical change in the swamp water, simply couldn’t stay coupled long enough to reproduce successfully. The chemist then brewed up a new adhesive to assist the frogs’ togetherness, which included one part sodium. It seems the little green frogs just needed some monosodium glue to mate. 3 4 2 9 6 8 1 5 7

Place topside in crockpot with onion and beefstock. Cook on med-high 8-12 hours. 1-2 hours before serving, add your favourite vegetables (diced) and red wine. Just before serving, pour the liquid into a saucepan. Mix the cornflour with a little water and stir into the pot. Bring the liquid to a boil until sauce thickens. Pour back through the casserole. Serve with roast potatoes and green vegetables.
