New head coach Cary Fowler is 6-0 against the RiverHawks as a defensive coordinator in the LSC since 2001. The last NSU win over Tarleton was on Oct. 26, 2002 in Tahlequah, Okla., 29-28, in overtime. The only other NSU victory was also in Tahlequah as the RiverHawks are 0-3 in Stephenville. PRESEASON POLLS Tarleton was picked No. 18 in the D2Football.com preseason poll, No. 15 in the Sporting News Division II preseason poll and No. 8 in the Lindy’s Division II Preseason Poll.
Notebook HONORING A FALLEN BROTHER The Texans have a “ZS” on the back of their helmets in honor of their fallen brother, Zach Shaver. Shave lost his life in March after suffering head trauma during a “routine play” on March 27. Shaver passed away on Monday, March 29. Two buses full of players, coaches, trainers and other athletics staff made the trip to the funeral in Wichita Falls. The Texans are also leaving Shaver’s No. 96 open for this season in honor of the would-be redshirt freshman. SENIOR LEADERSHIP Only eight seniors grace the Texan roster in 2010, but that includes fourth-year players Jacob Rowe and , as well as fifth-year senior Jamaal Steamer who was granted an extra year by the NCAA. STEAMING UP THE STAGE Senior defensive end Jamaal Steamer walked across the graduation stage in August after earning his bachelor’s degree. Steamer is now working on his master’s degree at Tarleton while playing his final season for the purple and white. ON THE ROAD AGAIN... AND AGAIN... AND AGAIN.... The Texans will play five of their first seven games of the 2010 season on the road away from Memorial Stadium. After opening with Northeastern State on Sept. 2, the Texans travel to Central Oklahoma (Sept. 11), Northwestern (La.) State (Sept. 18) and Abilene Christian (Sept. 25) before returning home. Following a game on Oct. 2 against Angelo State in Memorial Stadium, Tarleton returns the road to face West Texas A&M (Oct. 9) and Texas A&M-Commerce (Oct. 16). HOME SWEET HOME The Texans won five of six home games the last two seasons and have taken 42 of the last 55 contests played in Memorial Stadium. The Texans had an eight-game winning streak before the 2004 season. A 55-14 win over Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 13, 2001 began the winning streak before a loss to Southern Arkansas to open the 2004 season ended the streak on Sept 4, 2003. The Texans have posted a 71-37 record at Memorial Stadium since 1990 and a 55-29 record at home since joining the LSC in 1995.
NEW COORDINATOR, OLD FACE The Texans promoted linebacker coach Henry Cofer to defensive coordinator after Fowler took over as the head coach and abandoned the position. Cofer has been with the Texans for the previous four seasons.

COACHING AGAINST FORMER EMPLOYERS Tarleton offensive coordinator Scott Carey was a graduate assistant coach at Northeastern State in 2000 and 2001. NSU assistant coach Nic McBroom coached at Tarleton as both a graduate assistant and a full-time assistant over the last few seasons, coaching wide receivers.
NEW FACES ON OFFENSE The Texan offense will have several new faces in the huddle. The offensive line will have starters from the last two seasons gracing the top of the two-deep, so fans will recognize the five starters there, but only one of the back-ups on the line is a returner. The starting tight end, Bradley Peschke, returns for a second season as a starter while only four of the skill players were on last year’s roster, including two wide receivers (Jamal Mays and Devon Gray), running back Evan Robertson and tight end converted to halfback Tanner Maher. The rest of the squad on the offense is new, including Tennessee transfer quarterback Nick Stephens and his back-up redshirt freshman Aaron Doyle. In all, 13 players on the Texans’ offensive two-deep will appear on the list for the first time.

NOW ON SPECIAL The 2009 season was very “special” for the Texans’ special teams with key field goals and the like, but only the holder (Arthur Buckingham) returns for the 2010 season. All new legs will kick and snap the ball this season. HOLDING TWO TROPHIES In 2009, Tarleton tied two other schools for the Lone Star Conference championship and three schools for the LSC South Division title. The Texans claimed their fifth division title and second LSC championship. Tarleton was picked to finish third in the LSC South in the preseason polls by the LSC. He had 17 catches for 255 yards, averaging 15.0 yards per catch and 19.6 yards per game. Devon Gray is the second leading returner with 13 catches for 168 yards, an average of 12.9 yards per catch and 12.9 yards per game. DON’T TOUCH MY QB The Texan offensive line was third in the conference a year ago in sacks against, allowing just 15 sacks for a loss of minus-109 yards in the 13 games. Angelo State (11) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (14) were first and second. WHEN WE NEED IT The Texans led the Lone Star Conference in fourth-down conversions, getting 10-of-18 attempts for a 55.6 percent mark. One of those was a big completion on fourth down in the first round of the NCAA playoffs at Texas A&M-Kingsville that set up the 64-yard field goal that tied the game to send the contest into overtime. WHEN WE NEED IT... MOST Obviously, you have to score, and the Texans were No. 2 in the league in red-zone offense. Tarleton scored in 40-of-47 trips inside the red-zone with 30 touchdowns and 10 field goals. DEFENSE, DEFENSE The Texans allowed an average of 323.4 yards per game last season to the opponents, including 107.3 rushing and 216.1 yards passing per outing. Tarleton was No. 3 in the Lone Star Conference last season in total defense. THE “K” IS SILENT The “K” in Knicky is silent, but the play of the junior linebacker is not. Knicky was the leading tackler on last year’s squad, and he returns for his third year with the Texans. Last season, Knicky had 98 total tackles, including 36 solo and 62 assisted stops. He had nine tackles for a loss of minus-34 yards, including two sacks for minus-21 yards. He also recorded three interceptions which he returned for 34 yards while tallying four pass breakups and seven passes defended. Knicky also had a forced fumble and two recovered fumbles. TAKING THE BALL AWAY The Texans’ Brandon Johnson returns as the leading interceptor from last year’s squad. He had four interceptions last season with four pass breakups and eight passes defended. The Texans were second in the Lone Star Conference in interceptions in 2009 with 20 total interceptions - two of which were returned for touchdowns. PASS DEFENSE The Texans were No. 2 in the Lone Star Conference last season in pass defense. Tarleton (216.1) was behind Midwestern State (201.8). KICKOFF COVERAGE The Texans led the Lone Star Conference in kickoff coverage in 2009 with a net average of 45.7 yards per kick. IT’S UP, IT’S GOOD The Texans also led the conference in field goals in 2009. Tarleton was 16-20 for a .800 percentage. NOT ON THIS DOWN The Texan defense was second in the Lone Star Conference in opponents’ third-down conversion, allowing foes to average just 30.2 percent on third down. Tarleton led the league in opponents’ fourth-down conversions, allowing just four-of-18 attempts for a 22.2 percentage. HOPEFULLY, NOT THIS YEAR One of the things being stressed by head coach Cary Fowler this season is cutting down - “way down” - on penalties. Last season, the Texans led the Lone Star Conference with 91.2 yards per game in penalties. Tarleton had 129 penalties called against it that led to 1,185 penalty yards.

GET OUT OF OUR ZONE The Texan defense led the league in red-zone defense in 2009, allowing just 64.1 percent to the opponents when they broke into the red-zone. Opponents scored just 25-of-39 times in the red-zone. OH, BROTHER Sam Cole returns for the Texans for a second season, but this year, he is joined by his twin brother, Matt. Matt came to camp as a wide receiver, but he was quickly turned into a defensive back like his brother. Both are listed on the Texan two-deep in the defensive backfield.
Texan Football Program TEN WIN SEASONS Last season, the Texan program claimed its third 10-win season in school history, dating back to 1915. The other two were in 1990 (11-1) and 2001 (10-3). In both of those seasons, Tarleton claimed at least a share of the conference championships (outright TIAA champs in 1990 and co-champs in 2001). The Texans have already secured the program’s ninth season with at least nine wins. The last time Tarleton had at least nine wins in a season was in 2007 (9-2). WINNINGEST PROGRAM Heading into the 2010 season, the Tarleton football team is the winningest program in the LSC since 2000. The Texans are 79-32 overall this decade, a .711 winning percentage. In fact, Tarleton was the only school with a winning percentage over .700 this decade heading into the season. Midwestern State was second in winning percentage (.682) with a 75-35 record while Texas A&M-Kingsville was third with a .628 winning percentage (71-42). TEN WINNING SEASONS The Texans have secured 10 straight winning seasons. Last season, Sam McElroy led the team to his fifth winning season after former head coach Todd Whitten guided the Texans to five straight victorious seasons for only the second time in school history. Tarleton had five straight from 1986-90 under coaches Bill Pringle (1988-87) and Hal McAfee (1988-90).
50 YEARS OF SENIOR COLLEGE PLAY The Texans are getting ready to start the 50th season of senior college athletics, dating back to the 1961 season.
Coming Up UP NEXT The Texans will hit the road for the first of three straight road games. Tarleton will play at Central Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 11. Kickoff in Wantland Stadium is set for 6 p.m. in Edmund, Okla. FAMILY WEEKEND Tarleton will celebrate Family Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 2 as the Texans host Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference South Division match-up. The game is set to kickoff at 7 p.m.
