Sioux Falls Morning Optimist News Volume 1, Issue 12
A Message from your President – Cheryl Dyvig WOW…what a wild ride through the year. It included a five car Subaru raffle, picking up litter along Highway 11, starting a new JOOI Club, wrapping presents for kids at the Banquet and starting a TriStar program at the Multicultural Center. When I started on this journey as your President, I had no idea how the year would turn out. I remember hearing Ken Garner, our OI Pres President, speak at last year’s International Convention in Las Vegas. He challenged incoming presidents, “If you have a great club, make it better!” That is what our club has done this past year. Every person in the club has made a contribution even if you are unable to attend our weekly meetings. As a result of your efforts, we continue to serve children in our community through the projects we do and the financial support of other projects in the community. Thank you to everyone. It was not possible without thout your efforts and support. We will see how the month ends. I am Optimistic that we will be a Distinguished Club again this year. Let’s end this Optimist year on the following: To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.

Club Memberr Highlight This month’s member focus is on Board Member, Ken Headrick. Ken joined our club in 1987 and his sponsor was Michael Villard. He is married to Diane and has two daughters, Staci and Alissa. Staci lives in Eureka, South Dakota and has three children ildren and two stepstep children. Alissa is also a member of SFMOC, is married and has three step children. Ken enjoys the weekly speakers at our club meetings along with the fellowship of other members. One of his favorite club activities was working at the e concession stand at the Sioux Falls Arena until there was a shortage of volunteers. His favorite tenet of the Optimist Creed is “To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.” Ken has as always lived in Sioux Falls and grew up in the neighborhood north of the Cathedral. He served in the Air Force working as a security policeman. When he returned from active duty, he began working for the Minnehaha Count Sheriff’s Office. He still works part-time time serving legal notices on individuals. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing and working out at the wellness center. Ken is always willing to help on projects. He has been president of the SFMOC twice and has served on the SFMOC Board twice. The club has Ken and Michael Villard to thank for beginning our Opto Lotto weekly 50/50 raffle. It was their idea while they served as Sergeant of Arms. Ken’s favorite quote is “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” coun John F. Kennedy. If Ken won the lottery, he would take an Asian cruise uise stopping at ports in Vietnam, Vietn Singapore, New Zealand and Australia. Ken currently serves as the Chairperson of the Donations Committee in addition to being a Board Member. Thanks Thank Ken for sharing your time and talents with the Sioux Falls Morning Optimist Club.

OI Convention Highlights: There were 94 people in attendance from 30 clubs throughout the Dakotas, Manitoba and Minnesota District. Ken and Star Munch and Ken Headrick received awards for completing all 18 holes of golf in the 100 degree heat. Way to be persistent!! The workshops were excellent. We met Olivia Optimist at “Choosing Optimism as a Philosophy of Life”. Malcom Chapman taught us in a new way of communication in a circle which allowed for each person’s voice to be heard while we were curiously attentive and listening to what the person was sharing. Also teens from Rapid City involved in Teen Up shared how they use technology and social media. Basically all forms are used in different ways and at different times. Facebook seems to be the best along with texting. As members of the more mature generation, we need to learn how to navigate all forms i.e. email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. Ken Schulz, from Jamestown, North Dakota is our new incoming Governor. The1st Quarter Meeting is in Minot on October 17 - 18. Convention next year will be in Bloomington, Minnesota on August 11 – 13th.
New JOOI Club is Chartered: Sioux Falls Morning Optimist Club has sponsored its first Junior Optimist Club of Optimist International (JOOI). It was chartered on August 20, 2015 and followed with a ceremony at the Boys and Girls Club of Sioux Empire on August 27th. The new club is: The V. O. I. C. E. Club and is an Octagon Club involving youth in high school. Thank you to Emmy Neustrom, Kristy Kayser and Kari Johnson for helping to make this happen. The name stands for: Volunteers Out in Community Everywhere. It will be a delight to see what these youth decide to do and how they will express Optimism through their work and activities.
NW Financial/SFMOC Camp Bring It On Golf Tournament The tournament was cancelled due to heavy rains the night prior and wet conditions at Willow Run. It has been rescheduled for Friday, October 2nd. Mark your calendars; there is room for more golf teams. Volunteers are needed to cover the gaming holes. More hole sponsors are also welcome. Contact Jack Dyvig at 351-1889.
MO’s Courageous Kid’s Carnival The carnival was held on August 22nd at Sherman Park. We served over 180 children that day. They had fun playing on all of the inflatables and winning prizes at the games. The day was filled with smiles and screams of delight as they won their game or slid down the slide. Thanks to all of our volunteers who braved the prairie winds that day to help. Winners of the raffle are: Matt and Amy Dreke - $2000 CD from First Premier Bank, Gerry and Charlene Van Nort – 1 year Single Sanford Wellness Center Membership, Cheryl and Jack Dyvig – Sioux Falls Package @ Clubhouse Hotel & Suites, Johnny Carinos and theater, Kari Hogstad - $200 Gift Certificate for Karl’s Applicance. Thanks to all the members who supported this fundraiser by purchasing raffle tickets.
Correen Major’s granddaughters enjoy themselves at the Carnival!
