Dear Parents and Friends: As the new Principal of Lebo Public Schools, it has been my sincere pleasure and honor to become a member of this great community and school. Lebo Public enjoys a rich history of academic and cultural excellence that is the result of a collegial partnership between the school staff and parents who provide a diversity of experiences for the students. During my first weeks in the district, I have indeed found this closeworking relationship and focus upon what is best for children to thrive. I am truly honored to be appointed to this position and am looking forward to working with the dedicated staff to provide the best possible educational program for our students. Before coming to Lebo Public Schools, I worked as the K12 principal in Axtell, KS. I enjoyed my time at Axtell, but decided to come to Lebo to get closer to family. Before Axtell, I worked in a small 2A school in Uniontown, KS. I held the positions of teacher, district staff evaluator, and transportation director. However, my professional career started in Wetmore, KS. I taught 712 grade science at Wetmore for 8 years. Working in small schools my whole life has given me a great understanding of the family and community environment that a smaller school provides. Parents and staff who collaboratively work together each day for the students is the exemplary quality that attracted me to Lebo Public Schools. I am very excited to be a part of the Lebo community and to work closely with everyone to make our school even better. My greatest initiative is to provide the leadership that will facilitate a school environment to provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of each student to the best of our ability. The educational program must be academically challenging, engage each student by linking the curriculum to previous knowledge and experience, and also be exciting to promote further exploration of new ideas. Parents, teachers, support staff, and administration all have an important role to encourage our children to become active learners. It is my sincere desire to provide expanded opportunities for our students to acquire the skills to become productive citizens in a vastlychanging society. Through a close and collegial partnership with everyone associated with the Lebo community, I am confident we can make our school an even better place for our students to learn and grow. Respectfully, Duane Ford Principal

Mr. Duane Ford By Noah Hollinger
Mr. Duane Ford is the new principal for Lebo Schools for the 20162017 year. Mr. Ford grew up in Fort Scott. He then went to Pittsburg State University and majored in Biology, and he also minored in Chemistry and Physical Science. He then later taught for many years but, as a teacher, he saw problems that he believed he could fix as a principal. At that moment in time, he wanted to become a principal more than a teacher. He says he misses direct contact and teaching. Mr. Ford came to Lebo because he heard that it had a good reputation, and educational equality. That is what he wanted most for his four children. He also came to Lebo because he is closer to his family. Coming to Lebo for him has been a big adjustment, as he is trying to figure out how Lebo schools work so far. He first started teaching in Wetmore, Kansas as a science teacher for 7th12th grade, and an athletic director. He then later started working in Uniontown, Kansas, and also taught science for 8th12th grade. Then, he became a district evaluator. Mr. Ford felt that being a district evaluator was very different from being a teacher. Mr. Ford’s opinion on school spirit is “ Schools with higher school spirit has higher academic achievements and lower issues than schools with lower school spirit.” He also says that “If school spirit suffers, so will the team.” Mr. Ford loves to go to extracurricular activities with his family. He says “All we are is a collection of memories, and I think that they make memories so, yes, as a principal I go to extracurricular activities.” Mr. Ford is married, and he has four children. He loves to be with his family, and enjoys camping, boating, working with his hands, and being around kids.

What’s Hoppin’ in Hopkins’ Room Hi! I’m Mrs. Hopkins.I am thrilled to be joining the Lebo Junior High / High School faculty this year! I am sure this year will be very exciting at Lebo. This is my 18th year to be a teacher. Some of you may know me as the Preschool teacher, but I really have taught every grade there is in the past. I have taught special education for the past 15 years to include everything from Preschool to 12th grade. Prior to teaching special education, I taught fifth grade math and science. I have taught high school at both Osage City High School and Chase County High School previously. I am very passionate about teaching all subjects, though Math is my favorite, and I enjoy using technology as much as I can. Want to know a little about me? When I am not grading papers or planning lessons, you can usually find me in the garden or reading a book!. I love to have a flower garden as much as a vegetable garden; however, the heat this summer wasn’t nice to my garden. I live in Lebo and have for the past 10 years. I grew up in Independence, Kansas, in the southeast corner of the state. I recently married a man from Lebo a year ago. Together, we have 4 adult sons and 6 grandchildren. I love being a grandma as much as I love teaching! I received my Bachelors degree from Pittsburg State University and my masters degree from Emporia State University. Since that time, I have advanced my education by receiving an endorsement in English as a Second Language and becoming certified to teach all grades PreK through 12th grade. Some of my favorites : Color: Blue Restaurant: Olive Garden Beverage: Diet Dr. Pepper Flowers: Lilies and Yellow Roses Season: Spring / Summer “I love to travel!” Book: Just about any – “I love to read for enjoyment and visit the library often!” Sports: “Basketball – Go KU! Football – Go Chiefs! And always cheering for LEBO WOLVES!” I am looking forward to a great year! My door is always open and if you or your parents ever want to visit come on in! (You’ll find me in Mr. Becker’s old classroom) Linda Hopkins

You will get a call or a letter from either Linda Hopkins or Pat Bray if your child qualifies for the program. All Afterschool students will go to the Cafeteria at 3:20 for snack and attendance. At 3:45, they will go to homework time in the Elementary Computer lab. Activities will begin at 4:15 and end at 5:00. Please make sure your children are picked up as close to 5:00 as possible, but no later than 5:30. If you pick your child up during snack time, they will be in the cafeteria. From 4:15 to 5:30, please pick up your child through the elementary entrance. If you are not able to pick up your child by 5:30 contact Karen Piper as soon as possible. The first two weeks of school we have been swimming or playing on the playground. We have all enjoyed the pool on the hot afternoons. We want to thank the City Pool staff for all their time devoted to the Afterschool children during the first two weeks of school. The children were very excited to go swimming. September 6th we will begin regular activities. These activities include city library, ball galore, fall crafts, walking group and other fall activities. If you would like to volunteer and have a passion you would like to share with others, the afterschool is a great way to do it. Volunteers are always welcome and needed. Volunteering with the Afterschool is great way to earn community service hours and may be used on your resume. Lebo’s Afterschool wish list includes #2 pencils, pencil boxes/bags, children’s sticker, paper towels, glue stick and paper plates. Just a reminder: Homework time is a time for children to work on their homework. We will do our best to help your child complete their homework during this time. But we may not be able to check their work to see if it’s correct, so please look over your child’s homework. Remind your child this is also a time to read their AR book. The Lebo Afterschool is on the school web site. Please check it out. Enrollment forms and daily calendar of events will be posted. We will also post our wish list and any other important information. Please remember to contact the school or Karen Piper if your child will not be attending on days enrolled. This is for the safety of your child.
