GAME DAY
SERIES HISTORY
UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWESTERN vs IOWA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY
HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD Northwestern leads 2-0
ABOUT THE EAGLES
Northwestern enters Saturday winners of its last three contests. After dropping a heartbreaker to St. Olaf to open the season, the Eagles have bounced back and won their last three, most recently defeating Martin Luther 55-14 last weekend in New Ulm. UNW will look to protect its perfect 3-0 conference record – only St. Scholastica and Westminster remain unbeaten in UMAC play.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Since the opening of the newly renovated Reynolds Field a season ago, the Eagles have yet to lose a home contest, having gone 5-0 last year and defeating Crown in the 2015 home opener. After playing on the road three of first four weeks, UNW will enjoy the amenities of Reynolds Field for three of its final regular season games.
FIRST-EVER MEETING September 30, 2013 Northwestern 42, Iowa Wesleyan 6
DOMINATING DEFENSE
The Eagles have been dominant on the defensive side of the ball in 2015, only allowing 43 points to date. The most an opponent has scored thus far is St. Olaf’s 16 - with one of its scores being a pick six. UNW is only giving up 227.8 yards per game this season.
BOOT IT, BEN
Ben Lyons has been a huge asset for the Eagles this season, as the sophomore placekicker – who was last week’s UMAC Special Team Player of the Week – has converted on 2-of-3 field goal attempts, while connecting on 16-of18 PAT attempts. Lyons is also averaging 51.8 yards per kickoff this season.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
Iowa Wesleyan travels north to St. Paul with a 0-4 record. The Tigers most recently dropped a Homecoming thriller with Minnesota Morris last weekend in Mount Pleasant. IWU was picked to finish fifth in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
After only scoring seven points in the first half Saturday in New Ulm, the Eagles exploded for 48 second-half points to defeat Martin Luther 55-14. UNW’s 55 points are the most they have scored since a 55-0 win over Presentation College in 2011. A very balanced UNW offense racked up 488 yards of total offense (246 yards rushing, 242 yards passing). On the season, the Eagles are averaging 373 yards of total offense.
GRANT’S GETTING IT DONE
SHUT DOWN STUBBS
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Senior signal caller Grant Schoen has been very efficient this season, as the Independence, Minn., native currently sits tied for first on the UMAC leaderboard with his 192.5 passing yards per game average. Schoen has directed a unit that is averaging 373 yards of total offense per contest. In last week’s win at Martin Luther, Schoen finished 10-of-16 for 242 yards, while adding a pair of second-half touchdown passes.
LAST MEETING November 8, 2014 Northwestern 34, Iowa Wesleyan 12
Junior cornerback Austin Stubbs has been an instrumental part of UNW’s dominant defense. Stubbs, who now has three picks in four games, leads the conference in this category. He has also helped limit the opposition’s passing attack, as the Eagles are allowing just 140.5 passing yards per game – which ranks second in the league.

EAGLES UPDATE News and notes from Northwestern Athletics
CHUB REYNOLDS
The UNW volleyball team defeated St. Thomas for the first time since 2001 last weekend, as the Eagles made the short trip over to Summit Ave last Friday and took down the Tommies, 3-1. The last time Northewestern upended perennial power UST was when head coach Beth Wilmeth was a senior on the volleyball team. For her effort against St.Thomas, Shanay Gonder was named the UMAC Offensive Player of the Week. Gonder pounded down 21 kills in the win. The men’s golf team finished second at the Mid Country Bank Classic – hosted by Crown College – this past Monday in Waconia. Jeff Rynning led the way for the Eagles, carding a 77 en route to finishing sixth overall. The women’s golf team was led by Naomi Black at the same event, as the junior tied for third after shooting a 95. Wil Maki, who was named the UMAC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week, led UNW at the prestigious Griak Invitational last Saturday. The sophomore finished 44th overall in the challenging field of runners and helped the Eagles to a 12th place team finish. Danica White paced the Northwestern women, as the sophomore finished 66th overall with her time of 26:51.4. The women’s team finished 14th overall. The women’s soccer team was dominant in its 7-0 win over Crown Tuesday night, as the Eagles offense came alive, scoring four goals in the first half and three in the second. The men’s team picked up a dramatic 3-2 double-overtime win over host Crown Tuesday in St. Boni, as Joshua Fryc delivered the game-winner just over 106 minutes into the game. Ben Lassig and Eric Fast added the other scores for UNW.
Notes from last year’s Northwestern - Iowa Wesleyan game (Nov. 8, 2014) MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa – The University of Northwestern wrapped up its 2014 regular season with a 34-12 victory over Iowa Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon. The win puts the Eagles at 8-2 overall, matching 2012 for the best regular season finish for the program since 2008.
in a two-yard scamper. Marc Ballatori’s eight-yard touchdown reception from Caleb Huss put the host-Tigers within 12, but Northwestern again answered right back with a quick touchdown run by Chris SimonWallace that was setup by Kyle Anenson’s 42-yard kick return.
Northwestern was a little slow to start, but once the wheels started to turn, the points on the scoreboard began to add up quickly. Ben Lyons’ 25-yard field goal with 6:42 remaining in the first quarter was the first score of the game, and ended up being the only points for either team in the initial 15 minutes. The Eagles really got going not too much later, stringing together three straight second quarter touchdowns to lead 24-6 at the break. After quarterback Jacob Fletcher connected with Joe Sutton for a seven-yard passing play that resulted in a score, Jacob Fettig took advantage of Grant Stroud’s interception on the Tigers’ next possession, plunging over the goal line for his sixth touchdown of the year.
Lyons booted his first kick of 30 yards or more for the season through the uprights just as the fourth quarter got started to cap Northwestern’s scoring at 34 for the day. UNW’s defense held Iowa Wesleyan to three-and-out on two of the Tigers’ three remaining drives and six of Iowa Wesleyan’s 12 total charges to solidify the Purple and Gold’s 24-point victory.
Iowa Wesleyan got on the board on a 49yard pass with a failed point-after attempt before UNW responded with an 11-play, 62-yard drive that finished with Josh Sinnen scoring the 28th touchdown of his career
Fletcher finished 15 of 25 for 201 yards, throwing for both a touchdown and an interception.Lyons’ 10 points on Saturday put the freshman at 56 for the season, 10 behind Steve Gibbs’ record-66 from 2001. The Eagles picked off Huss three times while forcing a pair of Iowa Wesleyan fumbles. Luke Sommerlot recorded at least one tackle for a loss for the ninth game this season en route to a team-high seven tackles.
The 2015 season marks the 25th Anniversary of Reynolds Field here on campus at Northwestern. Reynolds Field is named in honor of Charles “Chub” Reynolds. Chub Reynolds was born and raised in Sioux Falls, S.D. and went on to star at Augustana College (Class of ’53), where he was a member of the football, basketball, track and summer league baseball teams. Reynolds was inducted into the Augustana Hall of Fame in 1987. Following a two-year stint in the Armed Forces, where Reynolds served during the Korean War, he went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education from South Dakota State. After stops at high schools in Iowa and Minnesota and a decade of service at Bethel, Reynolds landed at Northwestern, where he was hired to coach the baseball team, be the offensive coordinator for the football program and teach. In the spring of 1989, he was appointed athletic director and head football coach, a position he held for two years. He led the Eagles to a homecoming victory on Oct. 6 before passing away two days later at the age of 59 after a two-year battle with cancer. Reynolds was quoted, “I believe football builds the total person. Battling cancer has made me believe that more than ever. I have talked about a player never giving up as long as there is one chance to win, even if it is a one-in-a-million chance. I apply that lesson to myself every day. I also have learned that I can with pain.” He is also a member of the Hall of Fame here at Northwestern, as well as the Bethel Football Hall of Fame. The “Never Say Die” Award is given annually to a member of the football program in Reynolds’ honor. Reynolds has left his legacy here at this institution – something that will live forever.
